Besides the side effect of weight loss, people are curing chronic conditions and healing themselves by eliminating gluten from their diets.. I wanted to impress upon you that this is a medical condition- not a fad diet. Gluten is found in wheat, rye and barley.

I encourage you to try JUST 2 weeks to see how you do. If you can extend if for one month because you are someone who has one of these auto-immune disorders, we have seen that 1 month can heal many skin conditions and decrease chronic pain and arthritis.

Does Yoga Mean Women in White Tights?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you ever heard the word yoga and thought about that woman in white tights on the cereal box? The next thought that comes into your mind is "Wait, I can't even touch my toes. I would look really silly in a yoga class. Forget it. Chanting is not for me." Think again. This article will tell you what yoga is. It is not about women in white tights. It is not about auditioning for Cirque du Soleil either. It is not about chanting words you have no idea about.

Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning joining. By doing yoga we are joining together the various facets of a human being. We are made up of body, mind and spirit. By doing yoga we join these three parts together to form an integrated human being. The actual pose or asana part of yoga is only a method by which we can integrate the human being. In essence, yoga means to attain a sense of balance, focus and improved breathing. If we all did a structured breathing exercise which would improve lung capacity and increase circulation, then that would be yoga. In fact, the first step in doing yoga is to understand breathing and its effect on the human body. Physiology tells us that the functioning of the human body is highly dependent on our breathing.

We know that when we are anxious, our breathing is short and fast. When we are relaxed it is long and deep. The latter produces a more efficient human body and cells respond to that efficient infusion of oxygen to perform at their peak level.

Grains - Health Food Or Health Folly?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Grains are often called the "staff of life," having a sort of credibility that is almost biblical in proportion. So prevalent is the perception that grains make for "good food" that the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) - which is the United Nation's international agency for defeating hunger - uses a head of wheat as its emblem, with the Latin Fiat Panis or "Let There Be Bread" as its motto. Despite the rather lofty secular position a loaf of whole grain bread may hold in the international community, the biblical record actually shows that the first foods mentioned in the Bible were the Herbs and Fruit Trees (Genesis 1:29), and that by punishment for sin God gave man bread:

"...cursed is the ground for thy sake;...In the sweat of thy face shalt though eat bread, till though return unto the ground..." (Genesis 3:17,19).

The inherent wisdom of this biblical message has long been forgotten and today, according to the USDA Food Pyramid guidelines, grains should constitute the largest sector of our diet in the form of "bread, cereal, rice, and pasta." Many of us, whose hyper-agrarian taste buds and gastrointestinal tracs have never once gone a day without some grain-derived morsel of bread or cracker, find ourselves expressing our dependency on these foods in telling, half confessionary phrases like: "I'm starving for a piece of bread," or "that pizza is to die for," forgetting that among non-agrarian peoples, grains were universally considered a last resort, or, starvation food only.

In an agrarian society such as our own, we should expect our government to recommend the consumption of grains and our contemporaries to consume grains in plenty. After all, we are no longer hunting and gathering our food. Cereal grasses, in fact, are at the substrate of nearly all modern food production, from the breads we bake, to the milk we drink and to the meats we eat.* With 10% corn ethanol gasoline now a federal mandate, even our vehicles are forced to quench their thirst at the table of the almighty grain.

And yet despite all of this, economic pressures and cultural preferences can not delete the fact that our bodies did not evolve on a grain-based diet. Grain consumption, in fact, stretches back only 1-500 generations (20-10,000 years), depending on how far from the bread basket of civilization, i.e. the Fertile Crescent, one's ancestors happened to have wandered, or how fortunate they were in fending off invading agrarian societies, such as the Romans, whose moniker as the "Wheat Empire" was earned to it by the fact that that Roman forts were actually granaries, designed to hold a year supply of wheat in case of siege. Still today, the Irish, Scottish and Finns have some of the world's highest levels of celiac disease, as their resilient ancestors managed - for the most part - to fend off the Roman invaders, while at the same time preventing them from adapting adequately to the radically different fair of a grain based diet.

Historical examples like these provide an interesting window to peer through, but it is to prehistory, as inscribed so perfectly into the very flesh and bone of the human frame, and then even further down to our very DNA, that we must look if we are to perceive with any clarity how alien cereal grass seeds are to our metabolism.

The most obvious physiological representation of this fact is that we are monogastric mammals, and therefore are not equipped with the multitude of forestomachs found in the ruminant animals which enable them to break down these difficult to digest grasses. Even the ruminants have great difficulty with the "seed" form of the grasses, developing metabolic acidosis, infections and other "diseases of affluence" not dissimilar to those that afflict humans who consume grains heavily.

Seeds, after all, are the "babies" of these plants, and are invested with not only the entire hope for continuance of its species, but a vast armory of anti-nutrients to help it accomplish this task: toxic lectins, phytates and oxalates, alpha-amalyase and trypsin inhibitors, and endocrine disrupters. These not so appetizing phytochemicals enable plants to resist predation of their seeds, or at least preventing them from "going out without a punch."

We are monogastric mammals for a reason. Our gastrointestinal tracts have been intelligently constructed via millions of years of adaptation to environmental determinants, with diet first in order of importance. It is no longer a mystery why we are built the way we are. In fact decades of research in biology, evolution, anthropology and genetics have now brought to light the formative forces behind our present day metabolism and physiology.

We Are What We Once Ate Long Ago

A growing body of research has emerged which focuses on the relationship between agrarian or grain-based diets and diseases of affluence, and how increased susceptibility for obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes in agrarian societies can be linked to the absence of genetic adaptations to the consumption of grains in our species as a whole. These genetic aberrations can be further broken down, to varying degrees of intensity, in demographically distinct human populations who have had between 1 and 500 generations of biological time to adjust to their consumption. The greater the distance in space and time a human subgroup has spent from grain consumption, the less likely that group will have the genes necessary to handle the metabolism of grains effectively.

That we did not evolve eating cereal grasses was made perfectly clear in the published thesis: "Agrarian diet and disease of affluence - Do evolutionary novel dietary lectins cause leptin resistance?" where a group of European scientists** point out that:

"The grasses emerged between 65 and 55 million years ago. And since the last common ancestor of the humans emerged before this time, some 90 to 65 million years ago, it cannot have had a diet consisting of seeds from grass. Subsequent evolution of our primate ancestors up until 4-8 million years ago is thought to have taken place in the trees, where almost all potential plant food comes from dicotyledonous species and the monocotyledonous grasses are absent."

At some point 4-8 million years ago our arboreal ancestors descended from their trees taking up a radically different livelihood as ground level foragers, and later as nomadic hunters and gatherers.

The advent of Homo Sapiens 200,000 years ago saw animal foods become increasingly important. As our ancestors moved away from equatorial zones, where vegetarian sources of food were available year round, carnivorous behavior sustained our migrations to less hospitable latitudes.

Carbon isotopic signature analysis of hominin remains from the Upper Paleolithic (28-29K years ago) reveal that these ancient hunters and gatherers were consuming animal protein year-round at a higher trophic level than the arctic fox.**

This is not surprising information, considering that thorough analyses of the data gleaned from the world's historically studied hunters and gatherers show that 73% of them obtained 50% or more of their subsistence from hunted and fished animal foods.**

Perhaps the strongest case can be made for a grain free diet by looking a certain genetic defects all humans share in their genotype.

1. Humans share several distinctive genetic traits with felines: a) enlarged brain size and reduced gut size, in response to an animal based diet. b) the inability to synthesize taurine, an amino acid found in high levels in animal foods c) the inability to convert 18 carbon omega 3 fatty acids found in grains and seeds, e.g. alpha linolenic acid, into the metabolically essential 20 and 22 carbon fatty acids like EPA/DHA found in animal flesh, e.g. wild fish.

2. Humans are incapable of deactivating the leptin-blocking lectin found in grains, which makes them prone to obesity. The exact gene sequence that deactivates this lectin is found in genetically diverse species such as rodents and birds; a homology, no doubt, which exists because both species have had many thousands of years more time than humans to adjust to grain consumption.

Moreover, different human populations have differing degrees of grain adaptation.

1. Scientists have identified an incomplete Angiotensin Converting Enzyme gene, and an incomplete alipoprotein B gene in groups of humans who have very high rates of cardiovascular disease, and have had little time to adapt to an agrarian diet.

2. Celiac disease afflicts, in greatest number, exactly those human populations that have had the greatest separation in time and space from the agrarian modality.

The story of our intolerance to grains is complex, and involves too many factors to address in this short article. We will briefly list the most dominant problems, which we hope to cover in future analyses:

1. High anti-nutrient content: enzyme inhibitors, mineral binding phytates and oxalates,

2. toxic lectins which increase gut permeability, aggravate distant cell types and organ systems in the body, and stimulate the production of autoantigens.

3. Unbalanced amino acid profiles: low in the essential amino acid lysine, and extremely high in the excitoxic amino acids aspartic and gluamtic acid,

4. DNA sequences in grains, e.g. gliadin in wheat, exhibit similar, if not identical patterns with certain pathogens and human tissue, e.g. pertactin (the immunodominant sequence form pertussis - the pathogen that causes whooping cough) shares the same sequence as the wheat protein known as gliadin. This 'molecular mimicry' can cause autoimmune reactions and disease.

5. Certain grains have opiate-like activity in the brain e.g. wheat contains gliadimorphin which activates the endogenous opiate receptors.

6. Grains once processed and cooked have high glycemic ratings, causing the endocrine rollercoaster that can lead to both forms of diabetes.

*70% of the industrial world's grain production goes to feeding livestock, poultry and fish.

How to Make Puppy Chow Dessert

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you planning a kids party or a family get together and can't think of how to make that one dessert you just love? The one with gooey chocolate, peanut butter, crunchy crispix and powdered sugar. Yes, PUPPY CHOW.

Puppy Chow is the most delicious dessert and as simple as pie to make. Have you searched the web with all the millions of different suggestions on how to make it? Is everyone's different? Well, I have the secret to make the PERFECT batch of Puppy Chow desert. Gather these items and follow this simple recipe.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Peanut Butter
1/4 cup Butter
1 cup Chocolate Chips
1/2 tsp. Vanilla
9 cups Crispix cereal - Plain is best
1-1/2 cups Powdered Sugar

Instructions:

1. Combine peanut butter, butter and chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl.
2. Microwave for one minute then stir to blend all ingredients thoroughly. Add 1/2 tsp. vanilla.
3. Place the 9 cups of Crispix cereal in a very large bowl.
4. Pour the peanut butter-chocolate mixture over the cereal and toss evenly, making sure all the cereal gets a good covering.
5. Coat with powdered sugar, sprinkling evenly over the cereal and tossing as you sprinkle to cover each piece well.

Simple, wasn't it? There are people who use paper lunch bags or plastic bags and pour the cereal with the chocolate chips and peanut butter in it and then try pouring the powdered sugar in the bags. That can make a huge mess. Your best bet, is to follow my recipe and you will end up with one fabulous dessert. People won't be able to get enough of this dessert. And if you are like me, you may even smuggle some just for you for later. Happy cooking.

Diabetes - Foods To Eat And Avoid

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What one eats is very important from the point of view of his health.
The chief concern while monitoring and controlling diabetes is to see that the sugar level does not cross the normal range. This means that one needs to cut down on certain types of food and consume regularly those foods, which are good at regulating diabetes.

People with diabetes should try to maintain a healthy weight and eat a diet that is:

« low in fat

« low in sugar

« low in salt

« high in fruit and vegetables (at least five portions a day)

« high in starchy carbohydrate foods, such as bread, chapatti, rice.

There is no such food that people with diabetes should never eat. In addition, there is no need to cut out all sugar. But, people with diabetes should try and eat only small amounts of foods that are high in sugar, fat. So, if you have diabetes you can treat yourself to cakes and biscuits once a blue moon, as part of a balanced diet.

What foods to eat?

« A diabetic patient must eat lots of fruits and vegetables in which fibre content is very high. Such type of food lowers the requirement for insulin, the reason being it releases energy into the body cells slowly. A high fibre diet means more chromium, which is very helpful in the treatment of diabetes.

« As for vegetables, onion, garlic, ginger, radish, spinach, kale, cucumber, carrot, tomato, cabbage and cucumber are excellent in the treatment of diabetes. Moong, kidney beans which have been sprouted, and unripe banana which is cooked, are also recommended.

« Fenugreek seeds which have been soaked in water are good for diabetic patients.

« For fruits, take guava, Indian blackberry (jamun), fig, kiwi fruit, apples, citrus fruits and pomegranate juice. Let these things be a part of your morning breakfast. Since, fruit juice is high in fructose (fruit sugar) and can cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly, it's best for diabetics to drink fruit juice with a meal and avoid having more than one small glass a day.

« Replace white sugar with palm sugar, dates and honey, if you want to have something sweet.

« Unpolished rice, sprouted grain should be taken in moderate quantity.

« Fats like olive oil and peanut oil are good in diabetes.

« Drink plenty of water, at least 8 to 10 glasses per day.

« Single helping of fish or seafood, as it provides omega 3 fatty acids.

« Condiments such as pepper, chilli, mustard, herbs and spices.

« Raw vegetables need to be taken in large quantity, as cooked food raises the level of blood sugar fast.

« Eat non-fat dairy such as skim milk, non-fat yogurt and non-fat cheese, plain yoghurt, avoid cottage cheese a sit is high in carbohydrates.

« Some herbs and vegetables are specifically prescribed for diabetes, like Bitter Gourd and bitter melon juice.
What to avoid?

« Processed foods, white sugar, white flour and junk food, must be totally given up. Avoid sweets, glucose, fruit sugar, cakes, ice cream, chocolates, soft drinks, cream and fried foods.

« Anything that contains harmful preservatives and too much salt should be avoided.

« Avoid smoking and alcohol.

« Try and abstain from sweets, ice-creams and chocolates, including the so-called sugar-free types.

« Foods made from white flour, rye, corn, polished rice, bread, pasta, pastry, cakes, biscuits, pies.

« Starchy vegetables such as potatoes in particular; and go easy with beet, carrots, peas, beans.

« Avoid concentrated dairy products, such as khoya, kheer, cheese, cottage cheese.

« Fruits such as bananas, mango, grapes, strawberry, custard apple, date.

« Cottage cheese (except in small amounts)

« Avoid commercially packaged foods such as fast foods, chips, ready-to-eat foods, snack foods and "health foods."

« Fruit juices, as these are much higher in carbohydrates than fresh fruit. Moreover, they also lack in dietary fibre.

A few helpful tips if eating out -

· Avoid items called jumbo, combo, giant, deluxe, as they tend to have more calories.

· Choose grilled, baked roasted or steamed food.

· Choose water and calorie-free "diet" drinks instead of regular soda, fruit mock tails, sweet tea and other sugar-sweetened drinks

· Avoid creamy toppings, like mayonnaise. Add flavour with pepper, tomato, and onion.

· Watch out for high-fat topping salads, dressings, cheeses, and croutons.

· Choose a thin-crust pizza with extra vegetable toppings. Limit yourself to one or two slices. Keep off the extra cheese, which add calories, fat, and sodium.

· End your meal with sugar-free, fat-free frozen simple yogurt or a small cone of fat-free yogurt. Better still, go for a platter of fresh fruit salad.

· Check out on your portion size.

SO, EAT WELL AND BE WELL.

How to Lose Weight For Kids

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If your kids are overweight, then I got a couple tips for you to help them melt that fat off. These tips are very simple to implement -- watch your kids lose 10 pounds in a couple weeks if you follow the tips in this article. So without further ado, here's how to do it ...

1. Feed your kids oats instead of cereal. Commercial cereal is filled with sugar. Not good for your kids all at, because the sugar will make them fat. What you want to do is replace breakfast cereal with oat meals.

Buy whole wheat oats, cook it up and put some fruits and honey into it. Your kids will love it, and they will actually lose weight from eating it everyday (because oats contains fiber, which gets rid of toxic in your body). Also don't have orange or apple juice for breakfast -- tap water is good enough.

2. Walk your kids daily. What you want to do is set aside 30-40 minutes everyday and walk your kids to the park. Let them run around and jump up and down. Consider this good, quality family time. Do this 5 times a week. Have no time? Easy. Just skip watching TV.

(While you're at the park, you can do some exercise yourself if you wish. Do some squats, push ups, pull ups and jumping jacks. Run around for 10 minutes. It may seem simple but you will knock off some fat around your belly if you do this on a consistent basis)

Zucchini Baking Recipes

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It always seems like if you plant even one zucchini plant, you have enough zucchini to feed a very large family plus the neighbors. So, of course, there is then the question of what to do with all of that zucchini. It always amazes me that zucchini can taste so good in baked goods. Hope you enjoy these two baking recipes for zucchini!

Zucchini Granola Cookies

3/4 cup butter or margarine (softened)
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
grated rind of 1 orange
3 cups grated, unpeeled zucchini
3 to 3 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup butterscotch or chocolate chips
3 cups granola cereal

In a large bowl, mix together the butter and sugar. Mix in the egg, vanilla, orange rind, and zucchini. Add in the flour and baking soda. Mix in the granola cereal. Then mix in the butterscotch or chocolate chips. Grease a cookie sheet and put teaspoonfuls of the dough onto the sheet. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes.

Chocolate Zucchini Bread

1 cup brown sugar
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup oil
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup buttermilk
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
5 tablespoons cocoa
2 1/2 cups grated zucchini
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

In a large bowl, mix the sugars, oil, and margarine together. Add the egg into the mixture one at a time. Mix in the buttermilk and vanilla. In a small bowl, sift together the flour, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, and cocoa. Add in the zucchini and dry mixture by alternating. Add in the chocolate chips, raisins, and nuts. Grease a 9x13-inch pan and pour the batter into it. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour.

Could Flaxseed Be A Cancer Cure?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Flaxseed oil is also called linseed oil, and has been considered by many as being very beneficial to cancer patients. It was in 1951 that Dr Johanna Budwig, a German Biochemist and oil expert, devised a cancer patient diet that included high levels of flaxseed and cottage cheese.

The reason Budwig believes a high amount of flaxseed in your diet is a cancer cure and preventative is because of the linol-acids. In a westerner's diet, linol-acid is low, and flaxseed will supplement this.

As a scientist who has profusely studied flaxseed and its benefits, Budwig reported elements in the blood that cancer patients were lacking. The Doctor also observed a yellowy-green shade to the blood where healthy patients showed bright red.

Using the flaxseed and cottage cheese to supplement the diet of the cancer patients was successful according to Budwig. It was recoded that their blood became bright red and healthy, and many tumors began to disappear completely.

Not only those with cancer, but also patients who had arteriosclerosis, past strokes, bronchial spasms, heartbeat irregularities, ulcers, arthritis and dermatitis have reported much success from taking flaxseed.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids (essential for physical and mental wellbeing)and lignan (antioxidants and phytoestrogens (substances that act like estrogen) found in plants are two ingredients in flaxseed that are believed to be cancer fighters. Some people prefer to add flaxseed oil to their cereal, smoothies or water, and others prefer to use the ground, powder form, which is also nice on salads. If you can use the powder option there are the added benefits due to the high fiber content and possibly more omega 3 too.

There is a diet created by Dr Budwig that describes a recipe for flaxseed oil and cottage cheese mayonnaise. You can also sprinkle flaxseeds in the ground form onto your breakfast cereal or even take the oil or seeds directly with a heaped spoon of honey.

Flaxseeds are also lovely sprinkled over a salad or in a soup, and are practically undetectable in a smoothie. You can cook with them, but this can't be relied on for your daily intake as the properties change when heated. Drinking them down with a class of water is quick and easy, but needs to be done immediately so the mucilage doesn't swell and absorb the water, making it thick and gluggy.

The diet is designed specifically for cancer patients, and the main ingredient is flaxseed. Dr Budwig supports the fact that this is the main ingredient that resulted in tumor reduction, cancer remissions and healthy blood. People all over the globe are now following suit and starting to take flaxseed in some form every day.

2 Super Foods to Boost Sexual Stamina - Try These & See Your Premature Ejaculation Gone in a Flash!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Regular premature ejaculation can take an emotional and physical toll on your body. However, everybody knows that the condition is curable in at least 99% of all cases. Did you know that your nutritional intake and the foods you eat have an overwhelming effect on how long you can last in bed? That's true. In particular, there are 2 foods that you should take to supercharge your endurance. Let's see what they are...

The Super Foods That Will Boost Your Sexual Stamina

Super Food #1 - Your Friendly Neighborhood Cereal

If you have been avoiding that bowl of cereal at breakfast, it is time you change your habit! Breakfast cereals contain the all-important thiamine and riboflavin. These two important components help you store energy better - and they naturally help you last longer in bed.

While you are at it, you should also try to include breads and cereals that contain niacin. This is because niacin helps in the secretion of histamine. Histamine is the deciding factor when you are talking (or thinking!) about explosive orgasms or longer ejaculations. So increase your intake of these vital substances - whether in the form of breakfast or just a healthy snack - and see your sexual stamina soar!

Super Food #2 - Ice Cream (You Read It Right)!

Believe it or not, ice cream contains huge amounts of calcium and phosphorus. Not only do these help conserve energy in your body muscles, they also increase your libido and help you last longer in bed. An average bowl of ice cream contains at least 200 mg of calcium. This is enough to add the daily punch to your muscles and also helps the pelvic muscles contract more during an orgasm, giving you better ejaculatory control.

However, most of the benefits are confined to vanilla-flavored ice creams. So, if you are thinking about that three tiered monstrosity - well, think again! Don't get me wrong - I have nothing against chocolate or strawberries. It's just that research has proved the soothing effects of vanilla on the psyche of men and their endurance in bed. The smell relaxes you, lowers your inhibitions and creates greater lasting power when you are having sex.

These are two super foods that are highly delectable and tasty, and can give you that edge you always needed in bed. However, these foods should never substitute a healthy lifestyle. Don't gorge on ice creams just because they are good for you - you might just end up with more fat and precious little else! Start taking them in moderation and you will see the difference they make in putting the brakes on premature ejaculation in a few days!

Science Fair Projects Kids Will Love - What is Static Electricity?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Here is one of our science fair projects kids enjoy a lot. It is easy and very visual. The little ones may not understand the concept of the electrons yet, but it is good to let experience it and later the explanation will make sense much easier as they are familiar with the effects already. This is an easy science fair project that is quick and easy to do!

Science fair projects kids enjoy are always those that are fun and easy to do and they do not come easier than this one! It may be an easy science fair project, but they will still learn a lot from it.

What is static electricity?

Questions you should be able to answer once you have completed this experiment:

When rubbing the balloon against your sweater, what happens between the balloon and the sweater?
What happens to the puffed wheat or rice when the balloon is held just above it?
Why do you think the puffed wheat or rice jumps up?
Why does the puffed wheat or rice only stick to the balloon for a short while?
Why does the puffed wheat or rice not jump up and cling to the second balloon that you did not rub against your sweater?
Why do you have to do the second part of the experiment?
What is it called?
What is the proper scientific method?

What you need for this experiment:

2 Blown up balloons
A sweater
A bowl of puffed wheat or rice
A note book
A pen
A camera

The steps in your project:

Rub the balloon against your sweater
Hold the balloon just above the bowl with the puffed wheat or rice in it
Now you take the other balloon and hold it just above the puffed wheat or rice without rubbing it on your sweater first
Get someone to help you take notes through the whole project and make sure you take a photo of each step for your display

Your conclusion:

The second balloon that you do not rub against your sweater is your control. It shows you what happens if you do nothing to the balloon.

This is a very important part of the scientific method as you always have to prove that what you did made the difference and that what happened would not have happened in any case. I mean, without you doing anything. So you have to prove that the puffed wheat or rice would not have jumped up at the balloon if you did not rub it against your sweater.

When you rub the balloon against your sweater the friction causes electrons to move to the balloon causing it to be negatively laden, electrically. This will also cause the balloon to stick to your sweater. Now when you hold the balloon close to the puffed wheat or rice, it is drawn to the balloon because of its lower electrical load. Once the electrons passed from the balloon to the puffed wheat or rice, they fall back again as they are no longer drawn to the balloons. Because the puffed wheat or rice is so light it is very easy to see the effect, even when the difference is not that big.

Keep Cereal Crispy, Crunchy and Fresh With a Cereal Dispenser

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When it comes to breakfast, everybody has their own personal favorite food to eat. Some people like pancakes, some like eggs, some like bacon, some like French toast and some people like cereal. Cereal is by far one of, if not the most popular breakfast food available. If you love Cheerios, frosted flakes or others, you will enjoy the many different products that have been designed with cereal lovers in mind.

This article will look on one particular product, cereal dispensers. It will explain what they are, how they work and the benefits that can be gained from using them.

Everyone loves cereal it is a breakfast food that gets you up in the morning. It is a quick and easy meal to make, it tastes good and there is a wide variety to choose from. Cereal is the ultimate breakfast food and it taste so delicious and yummy. There is nothing better than having fresh and crispy cereal, but if you do not eat it from the box quickly, it will get stale.

Many people are often interested as to what a cereal dispenser is. A cereal dispenser is a product that holds cereal in a specially designed container. This container will keep cereal fresh for up to 45 days. The dispenser also has the ability to release the right amount of product into a person's bowl. If you have children this is great to have, as they will be able to get their own cereal. All they have to do is turn the knob and the exact amount that will fit in the bowl will be released. There will be no more worries about spills from boxes. It is a neat little device to have in the kitchen as it can be used to hold other dry foods such as candy, granola, peas and much more.

Dual Cereal Dispensers

Dual cereal dispensers are similar to single ones, except they have 2 containers. These are actually very popular in families where everyone likes different cereals. So if you have a child that likes honey nut cheerios, this can be placed in one container. If the other likes frosted flakes, It can be stored in the other one. With the Dual Cereal Dispensers, they have the ability to keep food fresh for an extremely long time.

Zevro dual cereal dispensers are very popular and they are available in different styles and colors. Stainless steel dispensers are the rage from this company, as well as ones in the color red.

To close, a cereal dispenser is a cool item to have for the family. It will keep your cereal longer and also have the ability to provide the right amount of product at the turn of the knob. It is perfect for children as they can now get their cereal without any spills or problems. It is also multi-functional as you have the ability to hold a wide range of dry foods such as nuts, granola and candy. If you want a multifunctional and cool product, then the cereal dispenser is for you.

Special K Diet Challenge Review

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you taken the Special K Diet Challenge?

The Special K Diet Challenge is a popular cereal diet promoted by Kelloggs and the goal is to lose 1 inch on your waist in 2 weeks. Kelloggs promotes the diet on cereal boxes and with their other Special K products like waffles and protein bars. The basic idea of the diet is to substitute a meal with Special K cereal or another Special K product like waffles. Of course your snacks can also include Special K protein bars.

Anyone who tries the Special K Diet Challenge may lose weight, but its probably not because of any magic behind the Special K products. Most people who replace a meal with Special K cereal are lowering their daily caloric intake which can of course result in weight loss. Special K products have sugar so you maybe even do better just switching to old fashion oatmeal.

Kelloggs has however done a nice job by including some interesting features in their website. You can find a Special K Diet Challenge buddy to share your ups and downs with. Having a partner to lose weight with is extremely important and can't be overlooked. Another nice feature is the ability to pick a coach to sign up with. There are 3 coaches to chose from, a fitness coach, life coach and a nutrition coach. This combined with some other features make the website worth a visit.

The Special K diet is easy to follow and it will probably save you some time each day as you have one less meal to prepare during the day. Overall you might lose the weight and inches but could probably do just as well with a common sense approach to restricting calories on your own by making better meal plans.

The Soup, Salad and Cereal Diet

A diet that consists mostly of soup, cereal and salads could definitely help someone to lose weight.

Here's a sample of a Soup, Cereal and Salad diet:

Sample day:
--------------
Breakfast: Cereal with fruit
Snack: Fruit or cereal bar
Lunch: Soup and Salad
Snack: Raw Vegetables
Dinner: Soup and Salad
Late night snack: Raw fruit, vegetables, cereal bar or bowl of cereal

This type of diet could produce some great results but if you follow it for too long, it could result in problems because you need enough calories and the right nutrients to be healthy and a healthy body has a fast working metabolism as well as healthy digestive system. You also want to choose healthful soups, salads and cereal or this diet could be counterproductive.

If you wanted to follow this type of diet for a week it could provide some fast results. Here are some tips to make it a little bit safer and more nutritious:

Hearty, Healthy Soups
Change the soup recipe regularly to ensure it has enough vitamins and protein and not too much sodium. Soups with meat and beans are a great idea. Stews are also a good option for a dinner time meal.

Lots of Colour in your Salad
A salad that's made of mostly lettuce won't be all that nutritious or filling. The more colour, the more nutrients. Don't hesitate to add grilled chicken, hard boiled eggs and beans to the salad as well.

Vary your Cereals
Try some high protein, healthy Kashi or multigrain cereals and don't forget to add fruit or nuts to the cereal for extra nutrients and satiety.

A soup, cereal and salad diet could definitely help you with weight loss goals for a short term and if you do it right you could end up with a lot of variety and nutrition in this diet.

Strategies to Overcome Insulin Resistance

Despite popular belief to the contrary, it may be possible to cure insulin resistance by following a protocol that includes an insulin resistance diet plan, insulin resistance supplements and a regular exercise program.

Insulin resistance (IR) is characterised by an inability of the body cells to bind insulin and allow nutrients to flow into the cells.

This results in elevated levels of glucose in the bloodstream, leading to many serious health issues. Over time, it may result in blindness, peripheral neuropathy (damaged blood vessels and nerves in fingers and toes that may require amputation) and coronary heart disease to name a few.

Despite the serious nature of this condition and its growing prevalence in our society, it may be possible to cure insulin resistance by following some simple strategies.

1. Eat small meals often

Having a 'Sunday Roast' or dinner with friends occasionally is fine. However, in order to prevent or cure insulin resistance, small meals must be the norm.

Larger meals induce a larger insulin response in the body simply because more nutrients need to be stored. Since it is necessary to keep insulin production as low as possible, replacing the large meals with smaller options is the first step that needs to be taken.

In saying that, having small meals doesn't mean you have to starve. You can still have the same amount of food throughout the day you just need to spread it over 5 meals as opposed to 3. By keeping insulin low you will also help your body use more of its fat stores as a fuel.

This is a major part of the insulin resistance diet plan.

2. Reduce your intake of refined carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates tend to induce a far higher spike in the blood sugar than other carbohydrates. This of course results in a greater amount of insulin being secreted by the pancreas.

When the receptors on cell membranes get continually bombarded by insulin they become de-sensitised to its action (IR). Therefore, reducing your intake of refined carbs means that less insulin is produced and the chance of the cell receptors becoming de-sensitised will also be reduced.

3. Reduce your overall carbohydrate and saturated fat intake

Carbohydrates induce insulin production far more than the other two macronutrients; protein and fat. Therefore, reducing your overall intake of carbohydrates will reduce insulin production and decrease the opportunity for IR to occur in your body.

All of our cell membranes are made of phospholipids, which are made from fats. If we have a high intake of saturated fats in our diet our cell membranes become harder and less permeable. This promotes IR.

By reducing our overall carbohydrate and saturated fat intake we reduce insulin production and improve the functioning of our cell membranes, which reduces IR.

4. Increase your fibre intake

Since fibre slows down the absorption rate of carbohydrates from the intestines into the blood stream, insulin production will also be reduced. By reducing insulin secretion, you reduce the potential for IR to occur in your body.

Fibre is found mainly in fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods. Some people find it easy to add a couple of teaspoons of psyllium husks to their breakfast cereal in the morning. This is a great way to increase your fibre intake and psyllium has a whole range of health benefits.

5. Add some good fats to your diet

All of our cell membranes are made of phospholipids, which are made from fats. Adding good fats to our diet makes our cell membranes more permeable and flexible. It also reduces IR by allowing the cell receptors to function optimally.

You may want to take some fish oil capsules every day, add some flax seed oil to your diet or simply add some LSA (Linseed, Sunflower seed and Almond) meal to your cereal each day. These are some easy ways to add good fats to your diet.

6. Have 'complete' meals

'Complete' meals are meals that supply your body with a portion of carbohydrate, protein and fat. By ensuring that all 3 macronutrients are in your meals, you slow down the passage of carbohydrates into the blood stream because protein and fat slow its absorption.

A slow and sustained release of glucose into the blood stream means that your blood sugar level will remain stable, insulin will stay low and the potential for IR in your body will be reduced.

7. Use glucose disposal agents

Glucose disposal agents (GDAs) function of insulin by making cell receptors more sensitive to its action. This means they have the potential to prevent and even reverse insulin resistance in your body, which will make it much easier for your body to access and burn fat as a fuel source.

Since insulin resistance is becoming more prevalent these days, most adults should consider using glucose disposal agents almost every day. In order to cure insulin resistance it is best to use it 3 times a day with your breakfast, lunch and dinner meals.

8. Exercise every day

Regular, daily exercise is important for everyone to do but it is even more important if you want to cure insulin resistance. When you exercise your body cells, particularly muscle cells, use up more nutrients. This makes the cell membranes more receptive to insulin since the cells need more nutrients to flow into them.

Both aerobic exercise and resistance exercise should be performed on a weekly basis. This will ensure the cell membranes become as receptive to insulin as possible.

Overall, by combining an insulin resistance diet plan with insulin resistance supplements and daily exercise it is possible to cure insulin resistance.

Holistic Nutrition

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Nutrition is the process of assimilating food for the growth and repair of worn tissue. It is also the science and study of proper balance within the diet to promote health.

The dictionary defines Holism as the "theory that the fundamental principle of the universe is the creation of wholes i.e. complete and self-contained systems from the atom and the cell by evolution to the most complex forms of life and mind." It also defines Holistic Medicine as "a system which treats the whole person, physically and psychologically, rather than simply treating the whole part." Thus, holistic nutrition looks at the total person, their dietary intake including supplements and lifestyle, and on prevention and the use of non-toxic, natural therapies. The goal is to 'do no harm.' Then with the use of natures healing power address the needs of the whole person. Nutrition is fundamental to the practice of Holistic Medicine. Correct diet is the foundation for other therapies and generally makes them unnecessary.

Western society has overcome the problem of infectious disease due to public health measures. Although, we have eliminated infectious disease, hospitals and mental health clinics are swamped and society is fragmented and ill-at-ease. We have replaced infectious disease with degenerative diseases.

By definition, evolution ensures that all living things which exist today are well adapted to their environment provided that they live according to the forces which shaped their evolutionary development--this definition does not translate to nutrition. According to the Macrobiotic philosophy it was by eating whole cereal grains as the principle food that man[kind] developed his superior intellect. Use of fire for cooking allowed man to change his food which in turn allowed man to become more flexible and adaptable and therefore the most successful species.

It was the abandonment of this traditional way of eating in favor of our modern (Western) diet which has led to most of the illnesses prevalent in modern society.

Macrobiotic nutrition has proven that if we return to a diet based on whole cereal grains, vegetables and fruit with animal products, rather than our present reliance on animal products, refined/chemically engineered foods, and sugar, we can regain our physical and mental health.

Thus, Macrobiotic nutrition establishes Principles of Natural Health Care:

· Good health is a natural state

· The body works to maintain balance and heal itself

· Acute illness is a manifestation that the body is struggling to heal itself

· Chronic illness is a sign that healing has failed

The Seven Essential Components for Macrobiotic nutrition are found in these food categories:

Carbohydrates - whole grains, (no wheat) beans, vegetables, seeds, fruits;

Proteins - beans, bean products, fish, seeds, nuts, meat, eggs, dairy;

Fats and oils - cooking oils, nut butters, nuts, seeds, butter;

Minerals - salts, sea vegetables, vegetables, fish, meat;

Vitamins - vegetables, fruits, sea vegetables;

Enzymes - fermented foods, raw vegetables and fruits;

Water - spring water, vegetables, fruits;

Using the description of disease development, we can readily understand the need for change. For convenience the description is described as three distinct phases but in practice the stages meld into each other with no clear division.

Development of Disease - Stage 1

By definition there is an imbalance between intake of, and requirement for nutrients. In theory this could be a deficiency but in our modern society it is more likely to be an excess.
There may be a loss of appetite or the person becomes a fussy eater; most people over-ride this by eating ever-more tasty processed foods.

The excess may be stored as fat (nature's way of providing for lean times which no longer exists).

Avoid the mistake of thinking that if a person is lean they are not overeating. Instead of storing excess, the body may work to maintain a balance by eliminating the excess (Principle 2 above)

This creates one or more of the following symptoms:

· Increased physical activity, boisterousness (diagnosed as ADHD -- pharmaceuticals are prescribed)

· Persistent hair loss (diagnosed as genetic baldness)

· Dry, scaly skin

· Itchy skin

· Occasional vomiting--(diagnosed as 24-hour flu or an exotic name du jour)

· Occasional diarrhea

· Discharges from orifices - eyes, genital system

· Tooth tartar

· Unpleasant body odors

· Strong-smelling urine, urinary crystals

· Bad breath

These are warning signs of improper elimination rather than true illness. They show that the body is making adjustments to maintain its healthy status. If only one of these symptoms is present this is a warning that changes to the lifestyle - especially diet - are needed.

Development of Disease - Stage 2
If imbalance between intake and requirement persists, the build-up of wastes will eventually lead to impairment of the major organ systems. If the organs of elimination are affected this will accelerate the process of deterioration.

In time, (days/months depending on the individual) signs of true illness will appear. At first these tend to be physiological in nature rather than as a result of degenerative changes in the organ systems:

· Signs of inflammation e.g. Pancreatitis, hepatitis, joint swelling,

· Abnormality of the immune system - allergy/intolerance, susceptibility to infection

· Hormonal imbalance - false pregnancy, abnormal oestrus, thyroid problems

· Rheumatism/arthritis

Development of Disease - Stage 3

As the build-up of waste products continues, the major organs will begin to fail. Signs of organ failure may not appear until 75% of the organ function is lost. At this stage the person is in danger--e.g. Kidney or Liver failure; Diabetes; Malignant tumors.

This description provides a framework for the categorization of all the disease conditions we experience. Using this we can form a holistic view of what is happening in the body and offer a prescription for action.

For example:

1. Idiopathic epilepsy (idiopathic--cause unknown).
Holistically this is a discharge of excess energy (Development of disease Stage 1). Therefore management would require a low protein, low fat, and chemical free, high in complex carbohydrate (unrefined grain). The amount of food needs to be kept low to meet but not exceed needs.

2. Pan-osteitis (bone inflammation) I include this, not because it is common but because it is comparatively unusual. What causes it? Without the benefit of holistic thinking we wouldn't know where to begin. But we can see that as generalized inflammation it fits neatly into the category of Stage 2 of the Development of Disease; control and prevention become obvious.

People who practice a Macrobiotic food plan experience:

-physical appearance, vitality and energy comparatively 15-20 years younger;

-no prescriptions or seldom use over-the-counter medications;

-seldom experience headaches--if they do, it can be linked to a specific issue, which is corrected naturally;

-less of the so-called 'aging' symptoms;

-their weight is low to moderate on the scale for height and body build;

-seldom experience colds, flu or allergies.

It is your decision to create your health--choose well.

Cream Cheese Dainties - A Serious Christmas Cookie

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Here's a serious Christmas cookie; it's white like snow, has a little red Christmas color in it, and it's full of fat, like Santa. How could you go wrong? It's also sweet with a crispy texture, and has a hint of almond flavor. This recipe comes from my grandma. She's been making these cookies at Christmas time for as long as I can remember Christmases. The funny thing is she brings these to Christmas every year but I refused to try them til about two years ago. I think I was afraid of the cherry piece in the middle. So I'm here to tell you don't be afraid, they're good, even if you don't like cherries. Be brave this year and try that Christmas cookie that looks weird and has too many nuts stuck to it, you just might like it.

Tip: to crush cereal use a food processor or place cereal in sealed bag and crush with a rolling pin. These cookies also freeze well.

1/2 cup butter
3 oz. cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. almond extract
1 cup flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups crushed cereal (Rice Krispies or Cornflakes work well)
maraschino cherries, stemmed and quartered

Cream butter and cream cheese until fluffy. Mix in sugar and almond extract until smooth. In a separate bowl mix flour, baking powder and salt. Add flour to butter and cream cheese mixture. Stir until just combined. Chill dough 1-2 hours until firm. Roll chilled dough into 3/4 inch balls. Roll balls in crushed cereal. Slightly push cherry piece into middle of ball. Place balls on baking sheet 2 inches apart. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until slightly browned.

Awesome Popcorn Facts!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Americans eats more than 16 billion quarts of it. This well liked treat is whole grain and good for you too! This equals out to 65 quarts for every man, woman and child. It is very low in calories. It has 55 calories per cup. Air popped has 31 calories per cup.

It is a member of the grass family. It is known by it's scientific name as Zea Mays Everta. It is a type of corn or maize. There are 5 different types of corn. They are flour, dent or field, flint, sweet and popcorn. Only popcorn can pop. This due to the amount of moisture in the kernels. The moisture content is 13 ½ to 14 percent.

The 2 different types are Snowflake and Mushroom. The Snowflake is normally used in concession poppers. The Snowflake pops up soft and fluffy. The Mushroom variety is mostly used in candy making. It holds up to handling and takes candy coatings better. There are over 700 different types of popcorn.

In the early 1700's, kettle corn was introduced to the settlers . They would take large cast iron kettles and pop the corn in them. The settlers used lard and molasses, sugar cane or honey. They would use what ever sweeteners they had on hand.

The kettle corn that is being popped at fairs and farmers markets is a great way to make money. It has a very high profit margin and a very low overhead. You can usually recoup your initial investment in a couple of shows.

Mr. Perry Spencer led the way to the development of the microwave oven. He discovered that when popcorn was placed near a microwave it would pop.

Some of the oldest known popcorn was discovered in the Bat cave of west central New Mexico in 1948. The ears of corn ranged from smaller than a penny to almost 2 inches long.

It became very popular during the great depression in the 1890's. They was sold it in bags for 5 to 10 cents each. Some street vendors would push their gas and steam powered poppers around following the crowds selling the delicious treat. Very few people could afford this luxury. Some people even started their own popcorn business to help their families during the lean years.

Sales dropped off in the early 1950s, when the TV. became popular. Movie theater attendance also dropped too. So did consumption, when the public started eating it at home. Home poppers were first introduced around 1925.

January 19 is National Popcorn Day!

April 7th is Caramel Popcorn Day!

October is National Popcorn Popping Month!

Native American tribes would pop the corn right on the cob. They would spear the corn cob with a stick and roast it over an open flame. This would cause the kernels to pop and stick right on the cob.

The English colonists enjoyed it at the first Thanksgiving feast in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It was brought as a gift by the chief's brother. The colonists ate the popcorn with milk and sugar. This is the first known breakfast cereal.

The American Dental Association lists it as a sugar free snack. It is low in calories along with pears, apples, cheese, nuts and plain yogurt.

For weight control, The American Diabetes Association uses it as a bread exchange. It provides the the necessary roughage and fiber to aid in digestion and the overall health of the body. It provides 1.3 grams of dietary fiber needed.

The kernels will start popping at the temperature of 347 degrees. It can pop as high as 3 feet. The un-popped kernels are called "spinsters" or "old maids". Good popcorn should produce less than 2 percent of "old maids".

It also contains more protein, iron and phosphorus than potato chips, an ice cream cone, pretzels or soda crackers.

It is enjoyed in many different flavors in different parts of the world. Germany, Luxemburg, Switzerland and Belgium love it sweet. The rest of Europe prefers it salty. Americans love it with salt and butter and a host of sweet coatings. The Japanese eat it with seaweed or shrimp flavorings.

Can Busy Moms Burn Body Fat Skipping Breakfast Or is That a Very Bad Idea?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

OK. Here it is straight from the horse's mouth... skipping breakfast is a very, very bad thing to do if you want to lose body fat!

And I'll tell you why...

First of all, eating your breakfast is critically important to speed up your metabolism so you can lose body fat. And sure... busy Moms have a lot of reason for skipping breakfast but I want you to understand that the choices you make has a enormous effect on losing body fat.

You see, when you skip breakfast... and never mind the fact that you just woke up and haven't eaten for at least 8 hours... your body starts to say to itself... "Oh uh... bad times are coming! We must slow down the metabolism to survive." And get this... your body starts to store fat. Not good... not good at all if you want to lose body fat.

No sir!

And THEN... lunchtime rolls around and guess what? You my friend, are STARVING! I know, I know... the road to hell is paved with good intentions and all that... but you start to eat more because you are hungry. And if you keep skipping breakfast, everything starts to accumulate and you start adding additional pounds...

Are you starting to get the picture now? Your Mom was right... eat your breakfast young lady! Now for some more details... try to eat a good breakfast within a hour of waking up for maximum metabolism. And breakfast will give you extra energy to get more out of your day. And... you will be more active... which means you will burn more calories...

You see... it all comes together now.

So you are busy... much too busy to make a conventional breakfast of eggs and veggies. In this case, I suggest you start looking for a convenient breakfast cereal. BUT! It has to be the right kind or the cereal won't be helping you out at all...

And the last thing I need is 10,000 angry Moms chasing after me with a spatula. My mother used a spatula to chase my brothers and I out of the kitchen because we were always hungry. So I still have nightmares about it.

But let's just move on...

The RIGHT kind of cereal is the one with very little or no sugar about 8 grams or less. At least 5 grams of fiber. And before you buy the cereal... look at the food label... make sure sugar is NOT in the top 4-5 ingredients.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Do the kids come home from school starving? Do you need something new for a lunchbox? Do you and your neighbors, family, and/or friends enjoying exchanging cookies and cookie recipes? Or maybe you enjoy gathering your children in the kitchen for a baking session on a rainy day. Then again, maybe you just have a cookie monster in your house who constantly empties your cookie jar. Here are a couple of recipes you need to try. The Golf Balls don't even need to bake; now how easy is that. The Angel Crisps are dipped in water and sugar before baking for a different effect.

CALIFORNIA GOLF BALL COOKIES

2 cups creamy peanut butter
2 cups crispy riced cereal
6-oz chocolate chips
1/2 bar paraffin
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup soft butter
6-oz butterscotch chips

In a mixing bowl, mix together the peanut butter, cereal, powdered sugar, and soft butter. Shape mixture into balls. In a heavy saucepan, melt the paraffin, chocolate chips, and butterscotch chips. Dip the balls into the warm paraffin sauce and place on a cookie sheet covered with waxed paper. Refrigerate to set.

ANGEL CRISP COOKIES

1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup shortening
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
water for dipping
sugar for dipping

In a medium size mixing bowl, cream together the sugars, shortening, egg, and vanilla. Sift the dry ingredients together and add to the creamed mixture. Mix well. Form into walnut-sized balls. Dip top half of each ball into water then into sugar. Place on greased baking sheet and press down in the center with your finger. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 to 20 minutes or until lightly browned and crispy.

Enjoy!

Raw Cereal

www.rawdawgrory.com A quick ,filling and healthy raw breakfast! The nuts and seeds I use for this cereal have been soaked for about eight hours with a change of soakwater about 1/2 way into it and drained and rinsed to reduce enzyme inhibitors , making them more digestable. After they're done with the soaking process you can either dehydrate them for to crunchy-goodness or just store 'em in a glass jar in your fridge (for up to a week) so they'll be ready to go for a quick breakfast :o) To add some extra nutrition you can sprinkle on some ground flax or hemp seeds or a lil' flax or hemp oil for omegas!

Healthy Breakfast Guidelines

Image : http://www.flickr.com

BREAKFAST.

They often told us since grade school:Start the day with a good breakfast! But while eating breakfast does seem to boast performance in children, it's not so clear whether it's equally important for adults.

While a number of studies have suggested that skipping breakfast can cause fuzzy thinking and fatigue, some experts say that the evidence is not convincing. Studies on human performance indicate that people who regularly skip breakfast may actually experience an energy slump on occasions when they do eat it. Dr Arthur Frank, MD, medical director of the Obesity Management Program at George Washington University Hospital in Washington D. C. is not opposed to the idea of having breakfast, "you shouldn't feel obligated to eat it", he says. "Follow your body's lead. "

Of course, if you frequently find yourself feeling tired as the day wears on, skipping breakfast could be making the problem worse, says Wahida Karmally, DrPH, RD, CDE, director of nutrition of the Irving Center for Clinical Research at Columbia University Medical Centre. She recommends starting the day with a breakfast that is high in complex carbohydrates blended with protein-whole-grain cereal with low-fat or fat free milk and fresh fruit, for example, or whole-wheat toast topped with low-fat cheese.

We recommend adding one of USANA's Macro-optimizers to your breakfast. They contain complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber for more energy, soy protein and potassium in the right ratio's, with a low glycemic index of 23. You can read more about macronutrients in one of the following sections. Children who eat breakfast are more likely to have better concentration, problem solving skills and hand-eye coordination.

The State of Minnesota Breakfast Study showed that "students who ate breakfasts before starting school had a general increase in math grades and reading scores, increased student attention, reduced nurse visits and increased student behaviors. "

Eating only sugary foods may cause your child to have erratic energy levels, it actually spike their blood sugar levels which can cause type 2 diabetes. Eating a balanced breakfast will help get them going and sustain their energy until lunch time.

A healthy breakfast does not have to take a lot of time. Stick to the basics and serve simple foods that are nutritious and quick in the morning. For ideas, here are ten tips for nourishing ways to kick-start the day.

Ten tips for a healthier breakfast.

1. Oatmeal in an instant

Instant oatmeal is great on a cold morning and contains fibre and vitamins. Choose oatmeal that isn't already pre-sweetened. Sweeten it with raisins or fresh fruit.

2. Smoothie madness

Blend frozen fruit(bananas and berries are great), low-fat or fat free milk and 100% fruit-juice for a quick, tasty breakfast smoothie with lots of nutrients.

3. Go 100% whole grain

100% whole-grain, fiber containing cereals served with low-or fat-free milk are a healthier alternative to sugary cereals. Whole-wheat muffins with smashed banana are also easy and tasty.

4. Eggxactly!

Boil, scramble or poach eggs and serve on whole-wheat toast they're packet with nutrition and in appropriate portions, are great for kids.

5. Toaster Treats

Frozen, whole-grain waffles take almost no time to make. Top them with berries, low sugar apple-sauce or sliced bananas instead of syrup.

6. Go Nutty!

Spreading peanut or almond butter on whole-grain toast is great to get both protein and fiber.

7. Go Fruity!

A fresh fruit cut up with a dollop of low-fat or fat-free yogurt is a great way to start the day. Apples contain fiber and bananas contain potassium.

8. Try All-Fruit Spreads.

Instead of butter or margarine on toast, try all-fruit spreads, fruit butters, or even sliced bananas or strawberries.

9. Bagel Classics

Try a whole-wheat or sunflower seed bagel with low-fat cream cheese or peanut butter.

10. Breakfast On-the-Go

Don't have time to eat breakfast at home? Keep whole-grain mini bagels on-hand or muffins or the USANA Nutrition bars (Iced lemon Fibergy Bar, Oatmeal Raisin or Peanut Crunch Nutrition Bars).
