Quincy Jones Interview Part 2 of 2

Ok. I have a dilemma. Probably the most played VHS tape in the history of mankind, my copy of "Ghostbusters", has a few minutes of stuff at the end of it: a few commercials (Not enough for a volume by itself) and a totally rad interview with Quincy Jones conducted by Ed Bradley on 60 Minutes. So I thought I'd present a few minutes of unedited 80's TV goodness. This all aired on December 8th, 1985 on CBS. 1. 60 Minutes Quincy Jones Part 2 (Featuring behind the scenes on "We Are The World" and conducting the score for "The Color Purple" with Steven Spielberg) 2. Amana 3. Kellogg's Just Right (Love those huge red glasses) 4. 60 Minutes Commercial Bumper 5. The Future For Kids' Sake PSA 6. San Francisco Federal Savings 7. Promo for "49ers Vs. Rams"

Sure, You Can Lose the Weight But Can You Keep it Off?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Chances are you have tried several diets in the past. Maybe you did not like the low calorie food because of the taste. Or, the diet made you feel deprived and constantly hungry. I am going to show you how to lose weight and keep it off by continuing to eat the foods that you love.

Quit blaming yourself for past diet failures. It was not your fault. Diets are not a one size fits all. What works for one person may not work for someone else.

We are going to start off slow and easy. Making sure you understand the steps in the diet and slowly changing your current eating habits.

Day one, simply add a low carb protein to each meal and snack. Low carb protein includes almost all meat, fish, fowl and some dairy. Cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, eggs, egg whites, milk, cream, half and half, sour cream and tofu comprise the dairy and non-meat alternatives.

Day ones sample menu, let us say you normally have cereal for breakfast, add a scrambled egg. A sample of you normal lunch might be chicken noodle soup, roll and butter and maybe a cookie. To that meal, add something like tuna salad. For dinner, instead of just garlic bread, spaghetti with sauce, meatballs, a drink, fruit, add 1 or 2 more meatballs.

Now for day two. Now that you are comfortable with guideline one, it is time to add vegetables and/or a salad to dinner and snacks. OK keep following the sample listed above; just add a side salad or something like that to lunch and dinner.

Day three breakfast, small bowl of cereal, with scrambled eggs and coffee with milk or creamer. For lunch, you would remove the chicken noodle soup but keep everything else. For dinner, choose between the garlic bread or spaghetti with sauce. The late night snack would be chicken drumettes, celery and cucumber, small amount of potatoes chips and small chocolate bar.

For day four, 2 scrambled eggs with coffee and milk then cereal. For lunch you would eat a salad, chicken, then roll and then cookie. The dinner time menu would be salad, Shrimp Dijon appetizer, 3 or 4 meatballs, green vegetable then garlic bread or spaghetti with sauce, your drink and then fruit. Late night snack stays the same.

For day five breakfast, lunch and dinner have no changes from day four. To the late night snack, add New Orleans crustless quiche.

Day six brings more change. No change in breakfast but, but for lunch, drop the roll and cookie and add tuna stuffed mushrooms. There is no change for dinner or the snack.

Day 7 brings more minor changes. At breakfast, add sausage to your meal. The other meals and snacks do not change.

This is just a sample menu. You do not have to eat the same food every day. I just wanted to give you an idea of how to start the diet.

To keep following the diet, follow all the guidelines and you will see the weight loss. On average, you will lose about 1 to 2 pounds a week which is considered healthy. You are also less likely to gain the weight back if you lose it slowly.

After following the guidelines for about 3 weeks, start adding exercise a little at a time. Do whatever is comfortable for you, even if it is something as simple as an evening walk.

I have been following this diet for 2 months and have managed to lose almost 20 pounds. I do not feel deprived or hungry. Do not forget to drink plenty of water.

Storage for Cereal Lovers

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you use proper Cereal Storage you won't have to tell stories like this one. My son just came and said to me " we need some milk but I just wanted to let you know the cereal in the boxes are stale but the Fruit Loops in the cereal storage container is still fresh". He could have easily said "Dad you wasted some money by leaving your Raisin Bran in the cardboard box dummy". And yes I did have the you blew it this time look on my face.

The key to keeping your Raisin Bran (o.k. not everyone eats Raisin Bran) fresher for longer periods of time would be air tight sealed containers to keep out moisture and insects. It is truly a no brainer, look who's talking.

Humor Your Taste Buds

More than likely, you ended up eating some Rice Crispies that were less than fresh, and more than likely your taste buds did not appreciate it. When you buy Captain Crunch, you want it to be crunchy, and of course you do not want your Cheerios to end up feeling like Gummy Savers (the only thing worst is sour milk).

Keep Away the Bugs

Often, if you have cereal around for too long without having it in a sealed container or cereal dispenser, you may end up having a few extra things in your bowl. Especially if you live in the warmer southern states, you really have to be careful about the storage and storing other types of dry goods, such as flour and sugar.

There are all kinds of bugs that would enjoy nothing better than some fun in the Special K box(okay that must be the insects on a diet), so you want to be sure that you use proper cereal storage to keep this from occurring.

Saving Money

Usually you will find that these products only has a shelf life of about 2-3 months max, and usually shorter than that once it has been opened. How many times have you had to throw out a $4 box of Captain Crunch because it went stale, or had to clean out the cupboards because bugs decided to throw a party in your cereal boxes?

Everyone wants to find ways that they can save money, and just by investing in some proper storage containers for your cereal, you can save money and cut down on the waste.

Cereal Storage time guidelines;

Cereals, ready-to-eat Room Temperature 2-3 months

Cereals, ready-to-cook Room Temperature 6 months

Corn meal, Room Temperature 1 year

Flour, cake, all-purpose, Room Temperature 1 yr

The Cereal Storage Solution

As you can see, storage is very important for a variety of different problems. A great way that you can save money, avoid getting bugs in the Puffed Wheat, and make sure that it always tastes great is to invest a little bit of money in airtight storage containers. Sure, it will cost you a little bit to purchase them, but think of all the money you could be saving in the long run. Please remember that all plastic containers are not made for food storage.

Whether you eat cold ready to eat , or you enjoy other types of cereals like oatmeal, Malt-O-Meal, or even grits, it is important that you store each of them properly. When you eat breakfast you want to know that when you take the first bite, it is going to taste great. There is no need for you to ever eat stale cereal again. Get the right storage containers and no doubt you will be able to enjoy a great bowl any time of the day, and you can save money while you are doing so.

I have seen a box of Raisin Bran last 6 months in a properly sealed container. I know this because no one in my home will eat Raisin Bran but myself.

I'm like a big kid I can eat Raisin Bran 24/7. I see you thinking about running to the kitchen right now!

Vitamins Bad - Minerals Good

I grew up thinking that science was perfect and we knew about all of the vitamins we needed to survive. We would one day make a pill that gave us all of those vitamins and then we could eat whatever we wanted and still be healthy.

Vitamin research was very important earlier in the century. A lot of disease was cured with what has become known as vitamins. British sailors used to suffer from a devastating disease called scurvy. It turned out to be a nutritional deficiency of what would become known as "vitamin C."

Similarly, other substances were discovered that when not present in the diet caused horrible disease. As each of these substances were found, they got their own vitamin letter. To be a "vitamin", a substance had to be a single chemical and had to be necessary to the diet or disease would result.

Mistakes were made. Vitamin D is perhaps the most notorious mistake. It doesn't qualify as a vitamin because you don't actually have to consume vitamin D. In fact, it can cause some serious problems of its own if too much is consumed. It shouldn't have received "vitamin" status because the body can and does make it's own vitamin D under the right circumstances. Those circumstances include exposure of bare skin to sunlight.

Rickets was the disease cured by consuming vitamin D which is present in raw milk and added to milk. Perhaps that is why we came to the bizarre conclusion that we must drink the milk of another animal for proper nutrition. The fact is that we are much better off getting 10 or 15 minutes of sunshine every day... perhaps more... perhaps less... depending on our skin color and where we live in the world.

Our bodies know how to stop producing vitamin D once we have enough. If we consume it, we can easily overdose and cause problems worse than rickets. All of the other vitamins discovered were extremely useful when they were discovered. Those who were poor and not receiving good nutrition were suffering from some horrible diseases. Vitamins cured those diseases.

Over time though, thoughts about vitamins became much more superstition than scientific. People began talking about anti-oxidants and how vitamins can prolong our life and make us much healthier... when taken above and beyond the amounts needed to cure the diseases that led to their discovery.

Most of the establishment merely shrugged and considered this kind of thinking to be relatively harmless. Although the diseases that are caused by vitamin deficiency don't really exist in the developed world any longer... what's the harm in taking a daily vitamin to make sure that you are always covered?

In fact, nutrition has been steadily degrading especially in the U.S. and Europe. Eating processed breakfast cereal, a fast food lunch with no vegetables or fruit and... boxed dinner also with nutritionally void rice, noodles or processed mashed potatoes... may eventually lead us back to having nutritional deficiencies and the diseases associated with them.

A multivitamin can be insurance. Right?

More than shrugging... over time... doctors and nutritionists themselves began taking vitamins... and in much higher dosages than what is required to avoid nutritional diseases. It became very popular to imagine that mega-doses of vitamins help prevent heart disease and slow down aging.

Most doctors now assume that is the case and take vitamins themselves. One result is that doctors have a much shorter life expectancy than the average population. There are other explanations for that, but recently many doctors and scientists stopped shrugging and taking their vitamins.

There is a massive epidemic of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and... other afflictions that doctors always assumed that vitamins may help alleviate or avoid. They didn't really know, but they assumed that the affect would either be neutral or positive for these diseases.

A number of studies have therefore been performed using vitamins against a placebo control as a treatment for these epidemic diseases. The results surprised a lot of scientists and doctors. In almost every case that vitamins had any effect at all... it was negative! We don't yet know the end of the story. It could be because most vitamins are now made with synthetic materials.

In another 10 years, we may see that vitamins actually are good, but they should be made from foods and not in a laboratory. However, we should remember how vitamins were discovered. It was discovered that the human body needs a minimum of these chemicals to stop certain diseases.

We never saw any advantage in any scientific studies for giving more than that minimum amount. And the "insurance" excuse really doesn't work either. The diets involved that resulted in these diseases were extremely poor. These were people eating nothing but white rice or nothing but beer and a tack made from dried ground wheat.

The diets were extremely limited and were limited for months or years before the disease manifested. In today's world, we still some some of these nutritional diseases in famine stricken countries in Africa. A single drop of some of these vitamins protects children from blindness.

But in today's developed world... these nutritional diseases simply don't exist... even among those eating only fast food or drinking a gallon of soft drinks and a box a candy every day. Even with the worst imaginable diet in the western world, the diversity of food available... and the quantities of food available... seem to completely eliminate the possibility of developing one of the nutritional diseases that vitamins were discovered to cure.

Have you ever heard of someone having rickets (vitamin D deficiency) or scurvy (vitamin C deficiency) or... beriberi (vitamin B deficiency)? Of course not. The diets that lead to these nutritional deficiencies is extremely limited. All of these diseases come into being in extreme poverty, famine or aboard ships at sea for an extended period of time.

Vitamins are not something you should worry about. In fact, every recent study has shown that those who consume vitamins did the same or worse than those not taking vitamins. Social groups that were most likely to religiously take vitamins every day (such as doctors) have a shorter life expectancy.

One vitamin in particular does seem to have a huge impact on weight. It's impact can be positive or negative. The name of this vitamin is Niacin. It is one of the B vitamins. The addictive component of cigarette smoke which is called nicotine is closely related to this vitamin. In fact, some claim that they are very similar in their effects on metabolism.

This substance is used routinely to create diabetic mice for use in laboratory experiments. The metabolism pathways are very similar for this substance in humans. Almost all scientists agree that one could easily make a human diabetic by giving them large doses of Niacin... just as they do mice for experimentation.

The link between diabetes and obesity is well established. In fact, I challenge you to get an A1C test or at least a laboratory test for fasting blood sugar and/or insulin as soon as possible. If you are obese, you are extremely likely to also be diabetic or pre-diabetic. It is useful to know where you currently are on the path to devastating diabetes.

The link between smoking tobacco and diabetes is also well established. Oddly, most doctors seem to think of the cause of diabetes as being obesity and not the other way around. Whereas for smokers, they tend to think of smoking as one of the contributing causes of diabetes and... recommend quitting smoking to help with diabetes blood sugar control.

I tend to think of the root causes of diabetes and obesity as being the same thing... diet. But if one had to think of either obesity or diabetes as the cause of the other... I would tend to think of diabetes as the cause of obesity and not the way most doctors think about the issue. In any case, I would urge extremely caution with the vitamin called Niacin. It has a dramatic affect on blood sugar, insulin, and weight gain or loss.

If you are taking a multivitamin currently, I recommend talking to your trusted health professional about discontinuing it... especially if it contains Niacin... and almost all multivitamins do contain Niacin. If you already have pre-diabetic or diabetic blood sugar levels and you absolutely insist on testing Niacin... watch both your weight and your blood sugar levels as you do your tests.

A phantom weight loss of a pound or two using Niacin might not be worth it to you... if you know that you are causing a dramatic rise in blood sugar levels and all of the damage that causes to your body.

Regardless, I think you can see why I don't recommend taking vitamins. However, my thoughts on minerals are very, very different. It is odd that most people don't think very much about minerals.

The developed world might not have any issues with vitamin deficiency, but... we can see dramatic differences in mineral consumption over the last century... and especially in the western world. We soften our water (removing minerals), grow food with fertilizers which cause dramatic growth... while lowering the mineral content in our produce. Farm land has been "used up" in terms of mineral content and we generally ignore these nutrients.

When I explained that I consider there to be four basic food groups... plants, animals, dirt and water... a lot of people probably thought that was nuts.

Who eats dirt? Historically a lot of civilizations actually did eat dirt. Certainly they got ash (which is just another name for minerals) on their food when cooking in open fires... and pouring those ashes in the fields where their vegetables were grown was very common. This replenished the mineral depleted fields.

All plants and animals contain minerals. If you want to see exactly how much, burn some organic matter until it is consumed. A log from a tree in a wood stove is probably the easiest way to do that. The heat produced from burning that organic material is what we call calories.

In the wood stove, you are literally burning the protein (if any), carbohydrates (wood has a lot of these) and fat (if any). If you burned some animal instead of a log, you would be burning more protein and fat. The result would be the same. The heat is produced by consuming the organic material whether it be protein, fat or carbohydrate.

The metabolism path in a wood stove is a bit more simple than in your body. As the burning is taking place, water in the organic material is heated up and turned to steam. So it is released as well and goes up the flu.

When you are finished completely burning the log, there is something left on the bottom of the wood stove. We call it "ash." Ash is another word for "minerals." Ash is not organic (meaning it doesn't contain carbon atoms) and elemental... meaning that you can find it on a periodic table.

In that ash is copper, iron, magnesium, calcium and a lot of other elements you find on the periodic chart. Your body needs these for all kinds of metabolic processes. It can not create them. They are elemental. It would take an act of alchemy to turn something you eat that isn't iron into iron. That just isn't going to happen in your body.

So you absolutely need these minerals. And the amount that we are consuming today is a lot less than it was in the past for a lot of different reasons. There haven't yet been a lot of studies on mineral intake and disease.

However, there are a lot of meta-studies on different geographies and their relative mineral consumption... and that can be correlated with longevity. One can see clear correlations between those who live at high altitudes and therefore drink high mineral content water and longevity. In fact, the only three high longevity countries that have population at low altitudes (sea level) are Japan, Norway and Ecuador. All three happen to have mountains rising dramatically from the shoreline resulting in mineral rich water available even at sea level.

That mineral rich water results in mineral rich fields and plants. The mineral rich plants result in mineral rich animals. Fish also play a large part in all three of these long living countries. Two are also relatively wealthy. Wealth is actually the highest correlation we have found with longevity.

So there are a lot of factors at play, but minerals are likely one of those factors. Should you take a mineral supplement? The jury is out on that one. It is completely unknown if mineral supplements in the form of pills are assimilated at all. The minerals are often literally the elements and are not extracted from a food. It seems likely that it is a better idea to get your minerals from food.

But how? We already covered one way. Eating real food will dramatically increase your mineral intake. Eat actual plants and animals and not stuff in a can, box or bag. At best, the processed foods contain mineral additives. At worst, they contain no minerals. Eating wild foods also helps.

Farming and ranching lead to very low mineral containing plants and animals. Eating game meat, wild fish and plants from your own garden or a local coop can dramatically increase your mineral intake. Of course, you also want to get rid of that water softener. Hard water means mineral rich water. The minerals are good for you.

If you have your own garden, you can also manually add ash from fires to the dirt. That will increase the mineral content in the soil and the resulting plant will then have more mineral content.

That's why I don't take a multivitamin supplement. And it is why I try to eat mineral rich foods.

Creating a Raw Foods List - 5 Essential Foods You Need to Start a Raw Food Diet!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you wondering what items you need to put on your raw foods list? In this article I will tell you the top 5 foods you will need to start a raw food diet.

Creating a raw foods list can be challenging, especially if you are new to the diet and don't know where to start. Many people are adopting the living foods lifestyle, or at the very least, are adding more fruits and vegetables into their diets for more nutrition, antioxidants, and fiber which can lead to stronger teeth and bones, glowing skin, and improved digestion. Most people can benefit from adding more fruits and vegetables into their diet.

When creating a raw foods shopping list some of the items you may have never even heard of. Most natural grocery stores will be able to assist you. If you don't have a natural grocery food store in your area I recommend shopping online.

Here are my Top 5 foods to put on your raw list.

1. Leafy Greens- You can't go wrong by purchasing a wide variety of leafy greens. They contain important minerals and vitamins such as vitamins A, C, K, iron and calcium. They are also a great source of fiber. You can blend the leafy greens such as spinach, chard, parsley, cilantro, and romaine lettuce with fruit to make green smoothies. You can thinly slice kale and collard greens and marinate them in olive oil and lemon juice to make a super nutritious salad. Leafy Greens are a superfood!

2. Hemp Seeds- Hemp seeds are 33% protein, rich in vitamin E, and contain both omega 6 and omega 3 essential fatty acids. They can be sprinkled over your favorite foods such as salads, soups, and cereal, or they can be blended in the blender to make creamy salad dressings and smoothies.

3. Sea Vegetables- Are an ancient wild food. They contain minerals and are an excellent source of iodine which is essential for healthy thyroid function. The easiest way to purchase sea vegetables is to purchase dulse flakes or kelp granules. They can sprinkled over your favorite dishes as a healthy mineral rich salt substitute.

4. Brazil Nuts- Brazil nuts are grown in the rain forest in Brazil and are an amazing source of selenium which can sometimes be difficult to get on a vegan diet. You can soak the Brazil nuts in water overnight and rinse them well. Then you can blend them in a blender with water and strain the mixture to make a creamy nut milk. Brazil nut milk can be used as a cow's milk substitute in your morning cereal. The milk can also be blended with frozen fruit to make a healthy breakfast or a light dessert.

5. Bananas- Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6, C, and potassium. They are terrific in smoothies and freeze really well. Blend two bananas with a cup of berries, a cup of spinach, a cup of water, and you have a nutritious and delicious green smoothie that can be eaten for breakfast. Always have frozen bananas available so that you can enjoy healthy fruit smoothies anytime.

Sample Diets For Lowering Cholesterol - Tips For Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

We all know we should eat more fruits and vegetables and exercise regularly. For some of us, we just know that we need to make changes in our diets. Some people try to make radical lifestyle changes, and others make changes one step at a time.

I am dedicating this article to those of you who just want to change everything in your diet! If you want to completely change your diet to lower your high cholesterol ratio, then you should try these sample diets for lowering cholesterol:

Breakfast:

Whole grains are one of the cornerstones to lowering cholesterol. I want you to start eating oatmeal and Cheerios regularly. I recommend placing a little flavoring in your oatmeal so it has a nice sweet taste. Do not add too many sweeteners to your oatmeal.

Many instant oatmeal foods include too many sweets. I recommend eating plain oatmeal and adding a small amount of sweetener to your breakfast. If you need more flavor in your cheerios, add strawberries to your cereal!

Lunch:

Eat a salad with low fat dressing. Salads are always healthy alternatives until you start adding a lot of high calorie dressings to your meal. Use dressing sparingly.

Do not drench your salad with too much dressing, or the health benefits of eating salads will be canceled out. If you are not big on salads, eat a low fat sandwich with wheat bread.

Dinner:

Cook vegetables with broiled or grilled fish and salmon. Do not add a lot of seasoning to your vegetables. Drink tea or water with your meal.

Have You Heard About Natural Supplements?

These are just some of the sample diets for lowering cholesterol. As you change your diet, I also recommend trying the best natural supplements to control your cholesterol. I recommend staying away from statins that many doctors are prescribing.

Statins will decrease your risk for developing heart disease, but they could also increase your risk for developing cancer and other life threatening illnesses.

Eating Breakfast Food Boosts the Immune System Or So the Cereal Maker Claims?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Apparently, Kellogg had posted a claim that Rice Krispies can help your child's immune system if they eat it every day. While it is true that eating a healthy breakfast and fiber type breakfast foods will indeed boost one's immune system, their advertisement and marketing caught the ire of regulators and the "politically charged" environment here in the middle of Swine Flu N1H1 season, stated one BrandChannel expert recently.

Indeed, branding, well, this is tricky business to attempt such a claim. Although it is true that with diet you can boost the human immune system, which no one doubts, at the same time the CDC is putting forth articles and PR trying to educate consumers about bogus claims. Kellogg better hope that it does not end up in a cross-marketing effort and catch the ire of the FTC, CDC of Department of Health.

Even if what they say is true, right now authorities are really pushing for vaccine protection. So, whereas, this could sell cereal, it might also confuse consumers and make them think that Kellogg's is making a bogus claim? I believe this to be a risky branding or marketing move.

In another great article on BrandChannel, they hit the nail on the head stating that it was a mistake to try this marketing ploy at this time. My thinking on this is that with the CDC and FTC going after bloggers, article marketers, and the online supplement sector lately on this issue, Kellogg shouldn't be surprised really. I am somewhat surprised they attempted this.

Of course, if they had put the fruit "Star Anise" in their Fruit Loops Cereal they might have been able to have the research to back them up on this. Indeed, it seems we make laws, rules, and consumer regulations for the lowest IQ and then we have agencies attack with vengeance. Kellogg should have realized this wouldn't fly, it was a "branding mistake," and you know, now that I think about it, they've made a few over the years there. Please consider all this.

Buy Omega 3 Capsules For Your Long-Term Health

Firstly, omega 3 is an extremely fragile compound that will degrade if exposed to heat and light. If it does get exposed, the molecules become rancid and are no longer effective. There has been an attempt made by many of the producers to reduce the chances of breaking down the molecules in the production process, for example, cold pressing. It is for this reason that research into the process of the different brands should be completed beforehand to ensure you get a product that has intact ingredients.

There are also several different sources of omega 3 available. The most popular is made primarily from fish oil. The others include such ingredients as flax seed oil or seal oil. The flax seed oil is the best choice if you have concern over the mercury content of the oil that is extracted from sea creatures. If you choose flax seed, be sure to get a cold pressed version that is contained in a dark bottle and keep it in the refrigerator after it is opened.

Mercury content in fish oils have been a concern that has been getting some media attention. More than 95% of the capsules on the market, however, have less than the maximum allowable mercury content as deemed by the Food and Drug Administration. The ones that have too much were all made in China and only contain slightly more than the recommended amount.

In addition, it is a good idea to get a capsule that does not contain omega 6. By nature of the typical North American diet, omega 3 is almost nonexistent and omega 6 is in abundance. The two fatty acids need to be in balance to receive the health benefits so adding more omega 6 will not be of help.

Several recent foods are marketing themselves as containing omega 3 including eggs, margarine, and cereal bars. The amounts contained in these foods however, are trace and no where near the recommended daily intake. The preparation of these food products may also effect the amount of omega 3 contained in the food, as the frying process causes the omega 3 to go rancid.

Omega 3 supplements are therefore a great addition to your daily routine in order to attain maximum health. Natural sourced nutrients in food are always preferred but the nature of our culture makes this very close to impossible.

High Fiber Foods Can Help Cut Your Appetite

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Bran Cereals can help you lose weight when consumed at the right time and in the correct combination. People in North America exercise less and eat more calorie rich foods now than they did in the 1960's and 1970's. In the United States about 66% of the population is overweight or obese. That is a staggering amount of the population.

Health expert have been trying to find simple and painless ways of helping people eat less and exercise more. A study done at the University of Toronto showed that; people who consumed a bowl of high insoluble fiber cereal (33 grams) 75 minutes before a buffet meal ate about 100 to 200 fewer calories at the sitting. The high-fiber cereal was found also to reduce blood sugar levels after the meal as well.

The study found that eating low fiber-cereal, white bread of even drinking water before the feeding had no effect on the caloric intake that people consumed or blood sugar response. Which indicate filling up on water will not decrease a person's appetite. A person will still feel hungary after drinking water. Although drinking the daily recommended 8 to 10 glasses a day of water is still important in the weight loss and recuperation process of the human body.

Another study by Glen Gaesser from the University of Virginia also found an important correlation; this study found that eating a bowl of 100 percent bran flakes for your first meal (breakfast) improved a person's blood vessel health and cut appetite.

The above mention studies can be found in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 86: 972-9, 2007.

How to Improve Sales by Position

Have you been to a grocery store lately? Recently, I wandered down the breakfast cereal aisle and discovered many cereal brands had more choices than I can remember. I noticed that the bland choices and lower priced options were on the lower selves and difficult to reach. However, the premium selections were very visible at eye level and took prime space. The premium shelf positioning helps sell more cereal.

The Problem at the Bottom

The bottom shelf in the grocery store is similar to the area where in our minds where we will remove an item for new selections. At the grocery store I was saddened to see one of my childhood favorites, located in the bottom corner. I feel certain that unless shredded wheat does something soon, it will become a victim of a progressive cereals expansion.

Creating Top Of Mind Awareness

One of a salespersons goal is creating top of mind awareness to sell more. Improving position is developed through selling skills and out smarting and out whiting the competition. Being in first place is ideal. However, being in second place isn't all that bad. When you are thought of second, you might get a chance when the first selection isn't available. Unfortunately, as you move further down the selection process it is like being labeled bland and on the bottom self where dust collects and not a good place to sell.

Expanding and Improving Your Selling Position

As a business owner or salesperson, you can create a competitive advantage by adding and expanding space in your customers mind for the services you provide. Each time you add a service in the mind of your customer, you will enlarge your overall position in their mind and protect your existing "Top Of Mind Awareness". It also prevents someone else from invading your mind space or premium shelf space - so to speak.

A Short History of Cheerios

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Cheerios are famous breakfast cereal in a distinctive 'O' shape made from puffed oats. They are popular among children and adults since the 1940s. A US based cereal company called General Mills owns the Cheerios brand and is also marketed by Nestle in as many as 130 countries including UK. Cheerios has a variety of styles and flavors; it is advertised as a nutritious and healthy breakfast.

The breakfasts of the 19th century were typically made up of toast, fried eggs, bacon and sausages. Healthy diet was not considered as important. However, some doctors had noticed their patients responded better to urinary tract problems and bowel even to mood swings if they had a better balanced diet of cereals and vegetables. Unluckily, cereals turned out to be difficult to be made into convenient meals. Some experiments were carried out for producing bite sized cereal nuggets.

In the 20th century, the modern pressure cookers and food presses made cereals to be able to be used as main ingredient. The early breakfast cereals like corn flakes and grape nuts had surprising sales and encouraged other mills to develop their own cereal brands.

In 1941, Cheerios made from puffed oats were first released. Lester Borchardt and a team of people at General Mills who were the inventor of Cheerios tried to invent a machine they could use to create puffed cereal like puffed wheat. After spending a lot of time and money on the technique having no progress results, Borchardt's boss told them to quit the project. Borchardt was a smart man and knew that the idea was good, he decided to continue the development of the machine. After two months, they were finally rewarded with success resulting in a new product for General Mills.

The marketing campaign of Cheerios was quite aggressive. It was marketed as Cheeri Oats but another company was already using the name. This erupted in a short dispute and General Mills later agreed in 1945 to change the name to Cheerios. It has retained the name till today. In the early 1940s around the time when Cheerios brand was being advertised, a cartoon character was created by the company named Cheeri O'Leary which was its brand lucky charm. At that time, television was not very common that's why character was used in animated and printed form proving popular among children.

For competing with Kelloggs which had deep pockets and a loyal following, it required innovative thinking. General Mills under the management of James Bell who was the company owner were inspired to sponsor a radio show targeting children with a moral story for every episode. It was a happy coincidence that the creator of the Lone Ranger wanted a sponsor for syndicating the show throughout the US beginning in 1949. The association with Lone Ranger continued for 20 years and helped Cheerios in becoming a top spot as one of the popular breakfast cereal.

Cheerios developed a new character in the early 1950s to replace Cheery O'Leary. The television viewers were at such a point that made it favorable to market Cheerios on TV. It exclusively resulted in the Cheerios Kid and Sue hitting the airwaves.

General Mills invented more advertising innovations of the idea that the packaging for Cheerios needn't contain only the cereal. General Mills marketing department successfully co-branded boxes of Cheerios with the Disney Company through the late 1940s and 1950s offering exclusive discounts on comic books.

In the mid 1960s, the Cheerios brand was also used to good effect when its packing was chosen as a main source for promoting a new social and charitable endeavor started by General Mills known as Project Head Start. Healthwise, Cheerios have been well received. General Mills have claimed that Cheerios provide all of the necessary nutritional values of oatmeal. Cheerios is declared the only cereal able to help reduce cholesterol in populations.

How to Dress Up That Plain Bowl of Breakfast Cereal

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When our daughter was younger, we tried to get creative with some of the plain breakfast cereals that we used to purchase at our local grocery store. Our daughter would enjoy bowls of cereal for breakfast before school or as an after school snack.

Some of these suggestions are on the healthy side and some should only be used as an occasional treat. If your child enjoys snacking on a bowl of dry cereal, you can certainly omit the milk. If you are putting together a take-along treat, only use dry ingredients placed in a zipper closure bag.

Fun Milk Tip: Instead of using white milk, you can use chocolate. If you are health conscience, you can try using soy milk.

Fun Cereal Add-Ins for Kids Suggestion List

Applesauce
Apples, fresh
Apricots, dried
Bananas, sliced
Blackberries
Blueberries, fresh
Brown Sugar
Brownies, chopped or crumbled up
Cantaloupe, chopped into small chunks
Caramel Ice Cream Sauce
Carrots, grated
Cherries
Chocolate Chips
Chocolate Covered Raisins
Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, 3 crushed cookies
Chocolate Syrup
Cinnamon
Cocoa Powder, 1/4 teaspoon
Concord Grapes
Cool Whip, one medium-sized spoonful
Dates
Fruit Butters - apple, peach, pear or pumpkin
Fruit Cobblers - one scoop of left-over cobbler
Graham Cracker Crumbs
Granola
Green Grapes
Gummy Bears
Gummy Worms
Honey
Hot Fudge Chocolate Sauce
Ice Cream, one scoop
Jelly
Jam
Kiwis, sliced
Mandarin Oranges, drain juice
Miniature Marshmallows
Mulberries
Oatmeal, sprinkle instant oatmeal as a topping
Peaches, fresh
Peanuts, chopped
Pears, freshly diced
Pecans, chopped
Pineapples, canned or freshly chopped
Raisins
Raspberries
Sherbet, one scoop
Shortcake, crumbled up
Strawberries, freshly sliced
Swedish Fish
Trail Mix, one scoop
Walnuts, chopped
Watermelon, chopped into chunks or shaped into small balls
Wheat Germ
White Chocolate Chips
Yogurt
Yogurt Covered Raisins

As you can see from the above list, you can dress up that plain bowl of breakfast cereal with a lot of things. Breakfast for kids should be fun, not boring. For the majority of breakfasts, choose the healthy options...but there is certainly nothing wrong with allowing a few of the other goodies from time to time too.

You'll be able to lose weight in no time; just use the information and follow it through.

Are you the type to have a little snack before bed? Or maybe you get up in the middle of the night for a "midnight snack". Well, that is extremely unhealthy. The night hours are for resting and rejuvenation. If you're snacking away, your body is going to store the nutrients and vitamins instead of burning them. In basic terms: You will get fatter.

Stop eating during the night and if you have a sudden craving. Try drinking some water with lemon. This will tingle your taste buds and keep your full through the night. Warning: you'll have to use the bathroom ASAP once you've awaken.

Now that you've made it to morning have some breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. How many times have you heard that line? Teachers, grandparents, parents, they have all probably said this to you. Well, it's a true fact. If you go with out breakfast, you'll feel sluggish and slow. You'll be focused on lunch time and not on your task at hand. Always eat breakfast. Breakfast can be cereal, toast, a bagel, you get the idea.

Your meals should be small, but filling and healthy. Eating 6 meals a day should be your goal. Now these 6 meals aren't large meals, but they're not small ones either. They're enough to fill you up and keep you going. Eating meals through out the day will keep your energized and have your metabolism running at full speed.

Start exercising on a daily basis. They don't have to be hard exercises, but they should make you feel a burn. However, the more you sweat the more weight you'll lose. The exercises are all up to you. Recommend ones are the basics: sit-ups, pushups, and the regular, but quite effective crunches.

You now have all the information you need to start losing weight naturally and headache free. You can get started right away or you can come up with a solid weekly plan. Its totally up to you. Good luck on your weight loss journey.

Get Kids Recycling - Old Cereal Boxes

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Let's face it, families have cereal boxes and plenty of them. If you have more than two kids in your household more than likely they don't like the same cereal. Add to the mix the parents. Parents more than likely don't eat the same cereal as their kids. Mom may want a cereal with less sugar and more fiber. Dad may want a cereal that's associated with a favorite sports icon. None the less, what do you do with the boxes after the cereal is gone?

One really cool project you can get your kids involved in is turning their favorite cereal box into a magazine holder. It's a fun and easy project. You simply cut one side of the box diagonally. Think of it as cutting a triangular shape out leaving a wall on one side. Test it out. Put some of your kids magazines inside or even some of your own. Shape your box accordingly.

After you cut and shape your box the fun stuff begins. Now you and your kids can decorate. You can use color construction paper and create various designs and then simply glue the paper to the box. Or you can cover your new magazine holder with fabric. Fun fabric scraps are cheap to purchase or you can use whatever fabric pieces you have lying around the house. If you decide to use fabric it will make the magazine holder sturdier which means it will last a lot longer. You can use crafters glue to hold the fabric to the cardboard.

Another cool idea for your old cereal box is to turn it into a quick and easy travel checkerboard. As parents know things get lost when you travel with the kids. If you make your own checkerboard and pieces come up missing its really not a big deal. When making a checkerboard kids will learn shapes and working with rulers and scissors. And who says a checkerboard has to have black and red squares? Kids can make the squares whatever color they want.

To start you simply cut along the creased edges of your box. Remember parents there are 64 squares on a checkerboard. Each row is 8 squares with alternating colors. You will need to cut 24 circle shapes with approximately a 1/2" diameter. What ever colors you and your kids choose for the board you will want to make your circles or checkers the same colors. Crayons or markers are a great way to color your board. Simply use a black marker to draw your lines on your new board and then let the kids have fun coloring in the squares. If you want to have some fun you can also use the picture side of your cereal box for one set of the checkers.

This is a great way to get your kids recycling and its a fun activity for a rainy or snow day. Your kids can be ahead of the game in learning shapes and coloring inside the lines. As always, remember to recycle and have fun!

How Astute Marketers Use eBooks to Steal Other Companies' Customers

This is an obvious idea, really, because all you are doing is aiming for a bigger share of the
market, something supermarkets achieve with their offers of loyalty points, and breakfast
cereal manufacturers do with plastic toys, while McDonald's and other fast food outlets
choose figures in sets to win business and encourage repeat buying. These are examples
of how specific information products might increase sales of particular products and
services:

* A dealer in cherished number plates might offer 'Strange and Even Stranger License
Plates'

* A dealer in second-hand cars could give '101 Ways to Keep Your Car From Being
Stolen'

* The publisher of property auctions newsletter might promote 'A Directory of Property
Auctions in the United Kingdom' (or any other country)

* A greengrocer could sell more fruit and vegetables via '101 Wartime Recipes Using
Potatoes, Carrots and Other Inexpensive Supplies'

* Potential customers for a carpet cleaning specialist might like 'A Guide to Stain
Removal'

* A hairdressing salon might win customers with 'Bitter Sweet Solutions (Homemade
Hair Treatments Using Vinegar and Honey)'.

Note: Some info products work best at attracting new customers, others at promoting one-
off high ticket items.

For example, once you had your guide to baking cakes using Bero flour or Stork
margarine, that was all you needed, until next year's edition appeared. And you only
needed to buy the product once to test the recipes. At least that is the theory. In practice, both companies attracted long term buyers as consumers tested recipe after recipe using Stork or Bero, most of the time choosing those very products in preference to cheaper ingredients from less well-known, less considerate suppliers.

As for high ticket items, such as a new car or personalized number plate, a package
holiday or stay in a luxury hotel, unless they are totally unique, they are probably available
from numerous sources. But if price, conditions and product are roughly similar across the
range of suppliers, that info product might be all it takes to tempt buyers your way.

Weight Loss - 7 Calorie Cutting Strategies

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you are determined to lose weight or even cut a few pounds of those hips then, reducing the number of calories you eat needs to be your priority. Follow these rules below and you should see those calories dropping off in no time:

1) Eat smaller portions: We tend to eat far too much when sitting down for a meal. In the West we tend to use larger plates which, gives us a good reason to fill them up with more food than we can eat. As a general guide, you should eat no more than will fill your two hands cupped together. This is easier to achieve by using smaller plates, about 7 to 9 inches in diameter should do.

2) Read the labels: A lot of processed food contains many additives and fat that can increase your calorie intake. Even the low fat options can still be high in calories because of their high sugar content. For example, the average box of breakfast cereal contains 250 calories.

3) Chew your food: Your hunger is controlled by your brain, not your stomach as most people think. When you start eating you have about 20 minutes for the brain to register that your stomach is full. Rather than gulping down your food, eat slowly and chew your food at least 20 to 30 times. By taking your time you will eat less and still feel you have eaten well.

4) Cut down on dairy products: These are the staple of the western diet because they taste good and are very versatile. However, they make us fat. If you cannot eliminate milk, cheese, yogurt from your diet then switch to the low fat options. Be careful, the low fat options make up for their lack of fat by including lots of sugar to improve the taste and texture. Remember, more sugar means more calories.

5) Throw away the frying pan: How we cook our food is just as important as what food we eat. Cooking meats in high fat oil will definitely increase your calories. It is better to grill, boil or even better, steam your food.

6) Eat naturally: Increase your intake of fresh organic vegetables. These foods bulk up your stomach leaving very little real estate for the much heavier high fat stuff. Also, vegetables take longer to chew meaning you will eat less. See strategy 3.

7) Cut down on the booze: Believe it or not alcohol contains calories and too much of it can pile on the pounds. The higher the alcohol means more calories for example, depending on the proof the average beer contains between 100 to 150 calories. Wine and spirits will have more calories because of their higher proof.

Premature ejaculation can be taken care of by using physical and emotional control methods. In addition, you should know that this problem is not considered to be permanent. However, did you know that the foods you eat are related directly to how long you can stay in bed? Actually, there are two foods that should be taken in order to increase your sexual power and you will learn about these foods in this article.

Cereal: Do you know that premature ejaculation can be taken care of by having cereal? Well, if you do not like this food at breakfast, you should change your mind now since all important thiamine and riboflavin are contained in cereal. Your body can store energy better and can be happy in bed with the help of them.

In addition, breads should be added with cereals that contain niacin, which can help improving the secretion of histamine, and histamine is considered to be an important factor of your ability to last longer in bed. So, just try to eat them and you will be amazed by the result.

Ice Cream: Premature ejaculation can be taken care of by having ice cream as well because calcium and phosphorus are contained in ice cream. It helps conserving energy in your muscles and improving your ability to last longer in bed. It is a fact that there is two hundred milligram of calcium in a bowl of ice cream, which is considered to be enough to help your pelvic muscles and you may be able to control over your ejaculatory system.

However, if you want to eat ice cream in order to take care of your premature ejaculation, then vanilla-flavored ice cream is recommended. There is nothing wrong with chocolate or strawberries, but according to the research, vanilla works better.

These are two foods which are considered to be able to help you from premature ejaculation problem. However, having a healthy lifestyle is also highly recommended. So, do not try to eat ice creams just because you think that they can help you since you might end up with gaining more weight, which is not good for your health as well.

Bulking Up Your Breakfast

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Breakfast is called "the most important meal of the day", yet many of us eat an inadequate morning meal or skip it altogether. Perhaps you are pressed for time or don't care for the usual quick breakfast fare. Tired of cereal, toast, and packaged yogurt, but are at a loss when it comes to thinking of something better to try? Check out these quick, innovative breakfast recipes to get you going in the morning.

Breakfast Tacos

Breakfast tacos are fast, easy, and cheap to make. What more could you ask for? For a simple breakfast taco, scramble one or two eggs and pan-fry (or microwave) a few strips of bacon or ham, then wrap in a tortilla warmed on the stove. A slice of avocado adds flavor and texture and makes for a delicious combination. For a Tex-Mex twist, top your tortilla with a spoonful of your favorite salsa.

Smoothies

It's hard to think of a breakfast that is faster and easier to transport than a smoothie. Gather together a few pieces of fruit, a half cup of yogurt or milk, a half cup of ice, and blend together. You can add almost anything to a smoothie, including cereal, berries, peanut butter, honey, chocolate, and more. Get creative and make up your own recipe by blending together your favorite ingredients.

Loaded Waffles

A waffle maker allows you to make a delicious breakfast on the fly. Find a waffle mix that you like to create the batter, ladle a spoonful onto the waffle maker, then mix in some fruit chunks, raisins, or chocolate chips. Most waffle makers beep when the waffle is done, so while they are cooking you can make your coffee or finish putting on your shoes if you're in a hurry. When the timer goes off, you'll have a perfectly cooked waffle with your favorite ingredients mixed in. Top with syrup or wrap in a paper towel and take it to go.

Yummy, It's Mummy

Image : http://www.flickr.com

"Why can't mothers slide comfortably into middle age?...Why is there such wretched pressure on us to look good all the time?... Why does there have to be such a terror of becoming a little dowdy?" Lauren Booth, Sister-in-Law of Tony Blair Prime Minster UK (1997-2007) (and maybe one day E.U President?)

It's the long school holidays. One should imagine that means I have my feet up as my son and his mates disappear down the park on their bikes. But no. I have just survived a week of dropping my son off at and picking my son up from the Gifted and Talented Summer School at the local grammar. Now I do applaud my son for being accepted onto this prestigious programme, but Jax is rather fed up from another week of exposure to the local Yummy Mummies.

Yup - if anyone thought having a child was all about the child...let me pop that bubble. Having a child means that you are on call all the time to look fantastic. Nothing else will do. And with people having children later than they used to... looking fantastic all the time is not easy.

It used to be generally agreed that once domestic contentment sets in a woman should be less concerned with looking good and more with being good and she should move from centre stage. This tacit agreement with society was in line with the rules of female fertility - so it was considered only right and proper that the 'goods stop being advertised when the 'use-by' date had passed.

I recall when I was young how people marvelled at the actress Goldie Hawn, not so much for her Oscar (for Cactus Flower), but for the fact that she was still alluringly attractive when she was the mother of Oliver and Kate Hudson. It seemed beyond belief that a woman aged 45 could have two secondary school aged kids and be a head-turner. Many thought it inappropriate that Ms Hawn be tossing about a head of long blonde hair, let alone appear in a champagne glass on the cover of Playboy. A controversy raged about the role of women of a 'certain-age' for months - it was concluded that Ms Hawn was a freak of nature and not a standard for us lesser mortals to attempt.

Back then the general rule of thumb was that being sexy belongs to the 29 and unders.... after that pull down the shutters and shut the shop. BUT more to the point, when you have had kids... Game Over. Now this wasn't all bad. Getting time off from the unnecessary competitiveness and boringly complicated business of being female was welcomed as a kind of holiday. As un- PC as it may sound there actually was some truth in the convention that being sexually alluring is a young person's occupation.

Your twenties are your selfish decade. Free from the shackles of childhood and not yet trapped under a weight of responsibilities there really is little else to do but invest in yourself. For most women, a great deal of that investment is in our physical appearance. And why not... these are the 'man-trap' years... always good to coat the bitter pill of commitment with honey. But the deed is usually done by the end of the decade, and once children start coming along, there really are not enough hours in the day. Okay, there are those who are fortunate enough to have an army of helpers and nannies - but for most of us mere mortals, it's a non stop round of washing things and persons and picking things and persons up. It was jolly nice that no one expected you to look like you just stepped of the catwalk too.

Back then you could always spot a mother. Practicality was a word that dominated her appearance. Her hair was no longer than shoulder length - practical. She wore a suburban uniform of unfussy, uncomplicated clothing and small sensible jewellery (if any) - practical. Her shoes were a regulation 1.5 inch heels in a comfort fit - practical. If she wore make up it would be just a slight dusting of powder, touch of lipslave, brush of mascara - practical. The older the mother the more practical the uniform became - obviously the older you are the harder it is to keep up with the demands of young kids. But gymslip mother or late prima-grada it was always the same. You stop journeying on the fashion train once you use the ovaries... well they weren't called OVERies for nothing. And society gave you permission to get of the fashion train - after all you're a mother now. It REALLY wasn't about YOU anymore.

And then... a cosmic event happened. A thirty something British Actress was photographed walking over Hampstead Heath. She looked dazzlingly beautiful... and she before her was a pushchair with a little girl called Gracie in it. The child was hers...and the paparazzi were astounded. Anna Friel had taken a break from her acting career to become a hands-on parent... and there she was... looked good... actually more than that...she looked better than she did PRE-CHILD. Desperate for a caption to print beneath this world shattering photograph, a Fleet Street sub-editor called her after a breakfast cereal for children, and the phrase Yummy Mummy was born.

From that point on, the luxury of looking exhausted from running around after children all day was banished. Ms Friel was not in the first flush of youth and she looked good. Since then celebrity over 40 Mums from Rachel Hunter, to Brooke Shields, to Halle Berry to Courtney Cox have furthered the cause showing that what ever your age - having a baby means you can look great too. There is no get out clause. To be a mother these days is NOT a holiday from the pressure of looking hot.

I recall going to my first party after the birth of my son. The date was circled on my calendar like D-Day on Churchill's. I had to look amazing and NOT AT ALL like I had just had a baby three months before. The dress was purchased... an unforgiving mushroom grey silver spangled number (DO NOT HAVE A CHILD BORN THREE MONTHS BEFORE XMAS PARTY SEASON!!!). No room in that for a post baby tummy. And after a summer of pregnancy flats...suddenly I had to learn to totter about on killer heels again.

I had to get everything toned and FAST. (Don't kid yourself it is only your mid-rift that gets pregnant... it ALL swells... every inch of you!) Breastfeeding (once done for the benefit of passing nutrients to the child) becomes essential as you can almost hear your muscles contract and watch with joy as your post birth deflated boobs pump back up. Of course all that feeding on demand gives you a healthy (if not slightly heavy) child, but this is no bad thing. My baby thought he had the best mother as every day he was raised and lowered 30-50 times by his playful mother... but really I was using him as weights.

All that just to walk into a party to hear my colleagues squeal with delight how I'd 'snapped back'. And walk in was about all I could do. Having a baby is exhausting enough without operation size 10 for Xmas. All that exhausting work to be pre-baby fit... and I arrived at eight and I went home to bed before midnight. But it is not just big events...you have to look good ALL the time least people say you are 'letting yourself go'.

Time was that she behind the pram was invisible, and the focus of attention was the pram's content. A mother would spend more time getting the baby ready for his debut out on the local streets. She could be in a dressing-gown and slippers for all the attention she'd get... it was all about the baby. She'd be down the park laughing comradely with other mums all in their unbrushed, ungroomed glory. Being a Mum back then was very chatty, very friendly and warm.

These days a simple thing like popping out to get a loaf of bread means full face of make-up, gleaming washed hair, skinny jeans and a cashmere sweater. Don't forget this season's accessories least people only give you 6 points for trying. And... if you plan to walk behind a pram in an urban area... get the killer heels out. There is no room for practicality in yummy mummy-dom... deviate from the rules and everyone thinks you simply have gone to pot.

It doesn't get any easier at the child gets to school. The school gates are mean places. No. I'm not talking about the kids.... It's the other mums. WHERE do they get the time? They step out of their cars looking like they are just about to go to Royal Ascot! When I worked part-time when my son was little, I finished work an hour early so I could rush home and change before getting to the school gates. I've witnessed working Mum's changing outfits on the train just so that they look good for the school gates... like dressing for work isn't enough stress when you have kids!! Even the stay at home mums knew your child is heading for social ostrichisation if you turn up in hurriedly pulled on jeans and a top covered in jammy finger prints. You tell yourself you are doing this for your kid and you fall in.

For me it did get easier when I returned to full time work and left the grandparents to it. But still, school events demanded my attendance and be it sports day, parents evening or the school play - I filled with fear of failing to reach even the bottom rung of the required standard of Yummy Mummyness. The general rule is that you must look as if motherhood is something you take in your stride. It does not affect your physical appearance AT ALL. You and your offspring must look perfect at all times.

When you have a baby - you snap back - there is no post baby bulge. Your nails will be painted, your lippy will be on and you will be in this seasons outfit. Your heels will be high. Your hair will be long and groomed and your earrings will be dangly. Your baby will instinctively know not to grab at either. Your baby will be dressed like a mini grown up (baby leather jackets were all the rage when my son was tiny). These rules linger till pre-school.

Then you must enter the arena of the birthday party and have original themes and extravagant 'thanks for coming gifts'. (I remember when thanks for coming was a slice of cake to take home!). You must also hold back any signs that you are any older than when you gave birth three years ago. You should by now be able to run after a hyperactive toddler in 3 inch heels. Said child must at all times be clean and ready at anytime to shoot the cover of Toddler Today.

These rules increase as the child heads steadily through primary education. By the time the child is 11 you must now look younger than you did when you had him. You may well be middle aged but you must pass as the slightly older sister of a twenty something. Botox is not shameful and dressing in anything that Liz Hurly would wear is mandatory.

Child is now at secondary school. You must now be able to pass as a sixth former...or at least be MILF standard (by which Yummy Mummy rules say Rachel Hunter is now your role model). You must also always be prepared to show the other mum's how hard you work at it by having an expensive gym bag visible. (This whilst wearing killer heels... you must NEVER be seen in sports wear!) You always must be seen as having to just dash as you have somewhere else to be... your life is one big juggling trick. Basically, as your child ages, you become younger. You are the busiest and most fabulous Mum on the planet and... incidentally, your stomach is always be ready to be used as an ironing board should the need arise.

I am so intimidated by these Yummy Mummies. It all seems so much work! Half the mothers in my son's secondary school never eat or are unable to move their eyebrows due to botox. Where as I hoover up food like it's going out of fashion and find a conversation with someone who remains expressionless scary! But I'm not brave enough to strike out against them. I was not brave enough to turn up at the Gifted and Talented Summer School in sweatpants and a tee-shirt. I am sad to say that not much has changed over the years... the slap went on, the magic-pants were rolled on, the whole Rachel Hunter ensemble went on... and I teetered to the gates in killer heels! Now this was good for my son. Kids like order, they don't mind rebelling but the last thing they need is a rebel parent bringing down the status quo. So, out he ran towards me at the end of the session, pleased to see me as always. And I supposed I looked exactly the same as the other mums.... Except for one important detail... I at least could raise an eyebrow!
