Nutriton 101 Breakfast Video Part 3 - Joan O'Keefe, RD

Registered Dietitian Joan O'Keefe discusses the importance of a good healthy breakfast. She focuses on why lean protein should be incorporated at every meal. The right start to your morning must include protein. Protein is a complex molecule and it's bigger than easily digested carbohydrates, so it takes longer to digest. This long breaking down process helps extend the time period before the body begins to raise blood sugar levels. Protein also helps you to feel more full, snack less between meals, and eat half as many calories. Protein doesn't have to be a difficult thing to have in the diet every morning. Sometimes, leftover dinners from the night before work very well. It doesn't necessarily have to be a breakfast food; it just has to be a protein source. Beans, nuts, and egg whites are good choices for breakfast. For more information or to view the rest of the Nutrition 101 series, go to www.foreveryoungdiet.com.

petit déjeuner - café au lait - Nutella - English Breakfast Tea .

Poland. The traditional Polish breakfast is a large spread with a variety of sides eaten with bread or toast. Sides include various cold cuts, meat spreads, the Polish sausage kielbasa, tomatoes, Swiss cheese, and sliced pickles. Twaróg, a Polish cheese, is the breakfast classic and comes in many forms. Twaróg can be eaten plain, with salt, sugar, or honey, or it can be mixed with or chives into a cream cheese-like spread. Eggs are served often as the main breakfast item, mostly soft-boiled or scrambled. For a quick winter breakfast, hot oatmeal, to which cocoa is sometimes added, is often served. Jam spreads are popular for a quick breakfast, including plum, raspberry, and black or red currant spreads. Breakfast drinks include coffee, milk (some areas may serve fresh milk from the cow), hot cocoa, or tea. Traditionally, the Poles avoid heavy-cooked foods for breakfast. For the most part, one will not see fried meats or potatoes in a classic Polish breakfast. Emphasis is placed on a large variety of foods to satisfy everyone at the breakfast table. pain Continental breakfast is an institutional meal plan based on lighter Mediterranean breakfast traditions. It is a light meal meant to satisfy one until lunch. A typical Continental breakfast consists of coffee and milk (often mixed as Cappuccino or latte) or hot chocolate with a variety of sweet cakes such as brioche and pastries such as croissant, often with a sweet jam, cream, or chocolate filling. It is often served with ...

The Perfect Breakfast!

What did you have for breakfast today? If you're like most people, it was probably something like cereal, bagels, toast, breakfast bars or donuts. Did you know that's the absolute worst thing you can do if you want to be healthy or lose weight! Why? It puts your blood sugar on a roller-coaster ride that often lasts all day long. And that's a bad, bad thing. I'm not going to preach on that here because that's a whole 'nother issue! Just know that if you want to SABATOGE any healthy eating or weight loss plan, grab a bagel for breakfast.

How would you like to start your day with something that:

Gives you tons of energy
Satisfies you all morning long
Helps you easily manage your weight
Controls cravings
Saturates your body with loads of nutrition
Helps keep you "regular"
Helps you resist those pesky colds and flu bugs
And more!

Today I'm going to share with you my "secret" formula for the PERFECT breakfast.

So, what, you may ask, constitutes the "Perfect" breakfast? A perfect breakfast should include quality protein, healthy fat and fiber. All wrapped up in nutrient dense foods that nourish every cell in your body and keep you going all morning long! Here's how that works:

Protein

Whether your goal is to manage weight or simply eat healthy, the latest research shows that starting the day with a protein meal makes a difference. Health experts note that people who eat protein at breakfast have an easier time sticking to a healthy eating throughout the day.

Fiber

Fiber is truly under-appreciated! But getting enough every day is key to health and easily managing your weight. Fiber helps keep you full, stabilizes your blood sugars and acts like little cleaning tools in your body, sweeping away the junk and keeping you squeaky clean (I can't verify that one, but it sounds good, doesn't it?). You find fiber in whole foods like fruits, veggies, nuts and beans.

Fat

This is where people get a little nervous. Ooooh! Fat! We've been told to stay away from it for 40 years. Judging by the look of things, that theory hasn't worked out so well. The right kind of fats are something we all need. They give long-lasting energy and a feeling of satisfaction and are absolutely necessary if you want to make it through your morning - and day - energized, satisfied and healthy!

You're probably asking: How in the world do you pack all that in one easy to make, super-healthy, portable breakfast? I don't have a lot of time to spend before I rush out the door! GREAT QUESTION! Here you go - my secret, superfood, super simple recipe for kick-starting the day (drum roll)...

Supercharged Smoothie
1 cup water
1 scoops protein powder (15-20 grams)
1 - 1 1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries
1 tbsp virgin coconut oil
small handful raw nuts (15-20)
1/4 cup chopped frozen spinach (optional)
Juice of 1/2 of fresh lemon or lime (optional)
crushed ice

Blend all ingredients until smooth.

In my family, this is the way we usually start the day. Because we know that one good choice leads to another. And this is definitely a GOOD first choice for the day!

BTW: Since this is the perfect meal, you don't have to keep it just for breakfast! Make a larger batch in the morning and save some for an afternoon or after school snack. Or use it as a whole meal replacement! It's my go-to meal when I can't figure out what to eat, because it's so much healthier than almost anything else I can come up with on a moment's notice.

It's something that I often made for my son before school and soccer games to super-charge him and keep his concentration going strong. Shhhh! I don't think it was a coincidence that whenever he'd have a smoothie before games he seemed to put extra points on the scoreboard!

Here's to starting your day right!

Super Hero Super Energy - Clean Burning Fuel to Boost your Super Powers - Breakfast

Its too early for even the sun to awaken, but I need to get out of bed on this cold dark morning and get working. Difficult to muster up the energy to get to all my to-dos for the day - I will need my dad's famous super hero power breakfast to fuel my body and mind. This is a high-energy, magically delicious raw breakfast that would make Popeye jealous out of his mind. Could be for any time of day, but its especially effective as...breakfast. BreakFAAST! And boy, is it fast -- fast to make, fast to eat, fast to convert into fresh long lasting clean burning energy for my day. Yea, it does sound too good to be true, I too was a disbeliever at first. I tend to disbelieve anything my mom or dad tell me, atleast initially. But morning after morning I witnessed the transformation in my dad - sleepy and grumpy before the super hero breakfast and magically energized and pumped for the day after the super hero breakfast. Every day I got more and more curious. So I gave it a whirl. One morning I crept up to the his bowl as he merrily bounced out of the kitchen to answer the phone. I snuck a small bite of this so- called fantastical breakfast treat. Why the big fuss? I wondered grumpily. Fireworks explode into a myriad of fresh, vibrant, cool, refreshingly sweet flavors all dancing the samba in my mouth! Trying hard to hide my delight in this sudden joy, I hold back a gallop and casually stroll to my dear father. So.. what is in that breakfast of yours, anyhow? And with that ...

Living Without Sugar - 3 Breakfast Ideas to Give You Energy Whilst Still Pleasing Your Sweet Tooth

Many of us prefer sweet foods for breakfast. But now your doctor said you mustn't have sugar any more, or you yourself decided you need to cut it out because you want to lose weight? For many people, and I admit I'm one of them, it's unthinkable to live without sugar. We know, we don't need it, but it somehow adds pleasure to our life. Sugary foods are luxuries we don't want to give up. So, what if you have to because your health demands it?

First of all, think about when you have sugar

as an energy booster to wake up in the morning
as a life saving snack when your energy level is running low
sweet foods like cookies, cakes and chocolates for pure indulgence

How sugar gives you energy

Let's focus on the first two aspects: sugar for energy. It's true that plain sugar, because it's absorbed very fast, in the stomach already, gives you a very quick energy boost. But after a very short time, this effect wears off, and you need more.

Did you know that carbohydrates as you find them in starchy foods like bread, pasta, potatoes and rice are way better energy providers, especially the complex carbs found in whole grain products? They are released and absorbed slower and over a longer period, thus giving you energy for hours instead of minutes.

Sweet sugar-free breakfast ideas

Instead of loading your breakfast with sugar, try this great strategy: Use fruity foods to satisfy your sweet tooth, and starchy foods to give you lasting energy for the day. Especially whole grain cereals or bread will do a great job. Your breakfast could look like this:

The cereal breakfast:

1 glass of orange juice (freshly squeezed, or the 100% unsweetened fruit juice out of the box)
a bowl of whole grain cereal with low fat milk
1 banana, or half a handful dried fruit mixed into the porridge

The sandwich breakfast:

1 glass of orange or other fruit juice
1 whole grain roll with jam (jam should be sugar reduced, if possible made with natural sweeteners) or honey
1 fruit

The meal-like breakfast:

1 small pancake, 2 small waffles or 2 muffins (use whole grain flour and make sure you don't use sugar, if you want to sweeten it, use honey)
fruit salad (without sugar added)
a small bowl of low fat yogurt
1 glass of fruit juice

You see, there are many ways to have a lovely sweet breakfast without sugar. The only sugar you find in these breakfast ideas is fruit sugar, which is doing much less harm to your body than the plain sugar, and honey which is healthier too. Be aware that when using honey, you only need half the amount than if using sugar as it is sweeter, and dried fruit contains more fruit sugar than the same amount of fresh fruit. But all it takes are some small changes, and you got a healthy sugar-free breakfast which won't make you miss sugar at all.

Tips on How to Prevent Breakfast Cereals Kick-Starting Your Fat Storing Mechanism

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The nations favourite and most popular breakfast foods are breakfast cereals. The problem with breakfast cereals is that they are high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates have an insulin provoking effect that can cause weight gain. To stabilise blood sugar levels protein and good fats need to be consumed alongside carbohydrates. Following are tips on how to add protein and good fats to your favourite breakfast cereal. This will not only give you a balanced diet with less of an insulin response but will also satisfy you for longer between meals.

The minimum you need to do is make sure you are not eating sugarcoated cereals with hydrogenated oil. Hydrogenated oil is used as a preservative to save the food company money by giving the cereal a longer shelf life. They are very unhealthy for your arteries and increase the size of your fat cells.

The next best thing is to eat gluten free cereals for easier digestion. Wheat and foods containing gluten can be very hard to digest and intolerance to these foods can cause gut inflammation as well as other allergies. Try eliminating gluten for 30 days to see if it makes a difference to the way you look and feel.

The easiest ways to add protein to cereals is to mix 1-2 scoops of whey protein powder to natural yoghurt and a little water. This is your milk substitute. Including a tbsp of flaxseed oil or flaxseed powder will add some good fat to the meal.

When eating breakfast cereals I prefer wholegrain puffed rice cereals, these are gluten free and sugar free with no nasty artificial ingredients. I mix whey protein with natural yoghurt; I use different flavoured yoghurts for variety. I then add a little water to make the yoghurt a little runny. You could use Greek yoghurt for a creamier taste. I always add flaxseed oil; I use organic oil for premium quality. This is the best way I have found to eat breakfast cereals for a more satisfying feeling and a much healthier way than the traditional method of adding pasteurised milk.

The pasteurisation process kills the important enzymes as well as destroying vitamins and amino acids. Commercial milk contains antibiotics and growth hormones. Lactose intolerance, which is common food intolerance, prevents the body from digesting milk sugars. Milk causes an estimated 50% of the adult population's bloating, gas, cramping and diarrhea. What about getting calcium in the diet? It is possible to obtain all your calcium from dark green vegetables, where do you think the cow gets theirs from? Yoghurt contains more calcium than milk and is easier to assimilate.

Candida Diet Breakfast Ideas - What to Eat on the Anti-Candida Diet For Breakfast

Are you looking for some great candida diet breakfast ideas? If so then today I have some suggestions for you with what to eat on the anti-candida program. Best of all these are easy to make, and they all taste great. The other key to understanding is that breakfast as seen by most people commits virtually every error that the candida diet plan intends to avoid so it can definitely be a challenge.

#1 - Hot Cereals: Get used to quinoa, millet, buckwheat or brown rice flakes mixed with hot water. Not only do these foods digest well, but they are ok for most people on the candida diet to eat and they're easy to make! Most health stores or even supermarkets with health sections will carry these hot cereals. To add flavour you can add stevia with a little bit of Himalayan sea salt, this will not only add flavour but additional nutrition to the meal.

#2 - Green Apples/Lemons/Grapefruit: Again those on the early stages of the diet may not be able to eat these foods, but for many green apples, lemons, limes and grapefruit are a great way to start the day without breaking any rules.

#3 - Soup: Who said that soup can't be for breakfast? There are so many options on this diet with wild rice and chicken, pea soups, lentil soups, quinoa with vegetables and broth. Best of all you'll have a supply of food waiting for you at lunch time as well!

#4 - Quinoa Pancakes: There are many grain alternatives which can be made into pancakes or waffles. There's buckwheat flour, quinoa flour, millet flour, pea flour etc. You can also use egg replacer in some cases if organic eggs are an issue for you. Like always you can sprinkle on stevia, inulin, xylitol and sea salt for additional flavour. Coconut oil also does well on this.

Breakfast doesn't have to be the fatty, sugary meal that most people have come to associate with. You'll find quickly that eating this way not only eliminates candida but many other health issues you weren't even aware were impacting you throughout the day because of it!
