Registered Dietitian Joan O'Keefe discusses the importance of a good healthy breakfast. She focuses on why lean protein should be incorporated at every meal. The right start to your morning must include protein. Protein is a complex molecule and it's bigger than easily digested carbohydrates, so it takes longer to digest. This long breaking down process helps extend the time period before the body begins to raise blood sugar levels. Protein also helps you to feel more full, snack less between meals, and eat half as many calories. Protein doesn't have to be a difficult thing to have in the diet every morning. Sometimes, leftover dinners from the night before work very well. It doesn't necessarily have to be a breakfast food; it just has to be a protein source. www.LeeHayward.com I'm going to break down the elements that make up a good muscle building meal. First off you need to consume a high protein intake. The general rule of 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight daily is a good place to start. I know there is a lot of controversy over protein intake, but the bottom line is I've never met a single person yet who was big and muscular who did not consume a high protein diet. Every single one of your meals needs to have a good source of protein. You should space your protein intake out equally over 6 small meals per day. You don't have to be 100% spot on with this, but try your best to space your protein intake out so that you provide your body with a continuous supply of amino acids to help support muscle growth. This is how you would calculate out how much protein you should strive to eat for each meal. First you need to consume at least 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight daily. So for example if you weigh 175 lbs. then you should be eating at least 175 grams of protein per day. 175 grams of protein divided up over the course of 6 meals works out to approx. 30 grams of protein per meal. The best sources of protein are lean animal proteins such as Skinless Chicken Skinless Turkey Lean cuts of Beef, Pork, Lamb, etc. All kinds of Fish Eggs & Egg whites Dairy products like milk & cottage cheese These foods are complete proteins because they contain all of the essential amino acids needed for muscle growth. Betty's 1952 Original Chex Party Mix Recipe

In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make the Original Chex Party Mix, a recipe that first appeared in the June 16, 1952 issue of Life magazine. Chex cereal was introduced in 1937 by the Ralston Purina Company, and the Original Chex Party Mix was used to promote it 15 years later. This has been a favorite snack over the years, even though the recipe has evolved through the decades, with at least 40 current versions available from General Mills, the maker of Chex cereal. I thought you might be interested in how it all began, by looking at the *first* recipe for Chex Party Mix! Ingredients: 1/3 cup butter 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 cups Wheat Chex 2 cups Rice Chex ½ cup nuts ¼ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt Melt 1/3 cup butter in a shallow baking pan. Stir in 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Add 2 cups Wheat Chex, 2 cups Rice Chex, and ½ cup nuts. (I used peanuts.) Sprinkle with ¼ teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt. Heat for 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven, stirring every 10 minutes. (Note: After baking for the first 10 minutes, I lowered the heat to 250 degrees, and after the second 10 minutes, I removed the Party Mix from the oven. The Chex Mix would have been over-brown, if I had left it the full 30 minutes at 350 degrees. I suggest you bake this mix at only 250 degrees for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.) Cool.
