How to Lose 10 Lbs in 14 Days Before Your Wedding Day

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It is 14 days before your wedding and you are contemplating losing weight before then. Looking stunning and immaculate in a wedding dress could be the best gift a bride would give to the bridegroom on their big if not biggest day. After founding Mr. Right, inviting eminent dignitaries and booking the church for the occasion of their life, all required is for the lady to look fascinating in her wedding dress while the guy look just as pleasant. Isn't it impressive to see a bride and groom who have the healthy glow, unique alertness and extraordinary energy needed for their wedding day?

However, because of the burning desire to look great for the wedding, couples resort to using drastic measures like fad diets or taking pills for quick weight loss. This is not only unhealthy but may be dangerous setting you for a future of yo-yo dieting rather than bringing lasting weight loss.

The wedding day require a lot of stamina and energy. You will have to greet a lot of well wishers and dance to the music while making sure that everyone enjoys the occasion. Unfortunately, not being in the best of fitness may ruin your plans for the day. Thus, it is expedient that you understand how to lose some pounds before your wedding day and I say in 14 days or two weeks to your wedding day. You don't have to walk down that Aisle carrying some unnecessary pounds. So, what can you achieve in two weeks?

First and foremost, whatever you do, make sure you eat low fat foods and eat more of raw fruits and vegetables. You will definitely lose weight because of the negative calorie effect. Your body burns 16% more calories after you eat a meal that's mostly fruits & vegetables than if you ate a meal without any fruits or vegetables plus...Fruits & vegetables high in vitamin C like... Oranges, lemons, limes, tomatoes, broccoli and cabbage, celery, carrot, pineapples, grapefruit, apples and watermelon burn off body fat so the fat can be easily flushed out of your body.

Secondly, drink water or fruit instead of sugar-based drinks. If you have been taking this before, you will need to stop this which will drastically reduce your calorific intake. Try having a drink in between meals as this can also stave off any hunger pangs.

Thirdly, when you are eating, eat slowly and enjoy your food and lastly, make sure you carry out more than 30 minutes exercise everyday till the last day. You don't have to go to gym or engage in something strenuous. You can walk some few kilometers downtown and you'll be glad you did.

It must be noted that while you will lose weight drastically by observing these modest rules, it is far better if you can observe these rules months before your wedding day.

Having a blissful wedding is what I wish you!

Basic Wheat Cereal

Image : http://www.flickr.com

During the winter months nothing could boast your outlook for the day better than a hot bowl of fresh wheat cereal. Most people today simply do not understand how easy it is to create cereals such as these. This article is intended to inform you how you too can wake up breakfast for yourself and your family.

To begin simmer a full cup of wheat in approximately two cups of water until such time as some of the wheat kernels begin to rupture. In the event that the cooked cereal is a bit on the strong tasting side you can readily discard your cooking water and apply some fresh rinse water to the wheat kernel mixture. To make your wheat mixture more enjoyable you can take your completed wheat cereal and add some sugar or perhaps a little butter to it and really wake up those taste buds. To speed up the preparation process you can soak your wheat kernels in water overnight. In the morning it will take you a mere 40 minutes for the kernels to start bursting open when preparing it upon rising.

If you happen to soak your wheat for several days they will become so soft that you could conceivably eat the wheat without even cooking it. A given quantity of wheat seeds will expand to approximately double what its original volume was after it has absorbed the soaking water. Keep this well in mind and be careful about soaking your wheat too long.

An important thing to remember is that some research that has been conducted has shown that individuals who had eaten wheat for several days straight have ended up with a very bad case of loose bowels. You have been properly warned now. I should in all fairness explain also that this same series of tests has also demonstrated that cracking the wheat into very small pieces prior to boiling it tended to rid the experimenter's body of this problem. You don't need a lot of fancy equipment to crack wheat - all you really require is a pepper mill. Even plan ordinary stones can be employed in the process of cracking wheat when necessary.

Good luck and bon appétit!

Glycemic Index And Diabetes - Is A GI Diet Good For Diabetics?

The Glycemic Index (GI) diet was all the rage a few years ago. It was promoted as a new diet plan that helped you to control your weight but was also good for you because it limited the amount of sugar entering the body. This was of interest to diabetics as they had to monitor their blood sugar levels at all times. People were interested in the glycemic index number for an apple, a piece of bread or a bowl of breakfast cereal and many other things. However it was not as simple as that as the GI number could vary depending on how ripe the fruit was, the type of bread or how the cereal had been cooked. This article will explain what is the glycemic index and how it works in relation to diabetes.

What is the Glycemic Index ?

The GI is a rating system for foods, mainly carbohydrates. It shows the effect that the food will have on the body's blood sugar levels. Consequently it is an indication of how quickly the carbohydrate food is broken down by the body. Foods with a low GI are broken down more slowly than those with a higher number. This also indicates the demand on insulin or the insulin response in the body or by other means if the person is a diabetic. For diabetics controlling the blood glucose level is paramount to controlling diabetes and minimizing the chances of complications in later life.

How Does the Glycemic Index Work?

The glycemic index is often not a straight forward measure of foods. Many factors influence the GI number of a food. The same applies to people too. Each person will have their own response to foods that are influenced by their age, level of physical activity and whether they are over weight. However the numbers are a general guideline that can help people make informed decisions on types of foods to eat. Foods are rated between 0-100 where zero is low and 100 is high. The general guidelines are as so :

Low is considered to be 55 or less,

Medium is considered to be 56 - 69,

High is considered to be 70 and above.

So the aim of a diabetic and anyone that wants to avoid having highs and lows in their blood sugar levels should be to try to include low and medium GI foods in their daily diet. Again at a very general level, simple carbohydrates like white bread and processed breakfast cereals will have higher numbers than say brown bread. You should change from simple carbohydrates to complex carbohydrates if you want to adopt a low GI diet. Fruit and Vegetables are also low and should be eaten. Adopting such a diet will give you more control over your diabetes. For people with type 2 diabetes this may mean not needing medication or insulin replacement therapy. For people with type 1 diabetes it should keep your blood sugar levels steady and within a normal range for longer periods. This may mean that less insulin is needed.

Is Feeding Baby Rice Cereal Hurting Your Baby?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It's on the shelf in every grocery store and in every book on baby care - but is feeding baby rice cereal actually hurting your child? Extensive studies on cereal are showing it's not the safe, wonderful food you've been taught... and studies on children are showing we've been starting babies on foods they're not ready for.

What problems could "gentle" rice cereal cause? The startling truth is that studies have shown rice cereal is anything but gentle on baby's immature digestive system. Parents who, for decades, have seen their babies start having gas, constipation, bloating, fussiness, and even allergic reactions after starting cereal are finally getting the scientific evidence behind them to be taken seriously. It is not a good food for babies.

Cereal causes a few problems. First, a sixteen year study done in Australia has shown that rice cereal causes far more reactions than either cow's milk or soy - two major allergens. It also causes more severe reactions in the infant's digestive system, causing damage to the gut wall and lining.

The western world tends to think that rice allergies are rare mostly because there's not a whole lot of rice eaten in many countries. Asian countries, however, eat a lot rice and rice allergy is quite common. Rice is not the completely allergy-free food you've been lead to believe.

Another problem with rice is that it's binding. That's right - it clogs the digestive system up. If somebody has diarrhea they're advised to eat mostly rice and bananas to help stop the diarrhea. The rice stops things up - feeding baby rice cereal can cause problems with constipation. Many babies get severely constipated on rice cereal.

Rice, like all cereal grains, is hard for babies to digest. Children don't develop the enzymes to break down starches and grains until after their first birthday. They just don't handle rice, oats, wheat, corn, or other grains well. Many parents have noticed that grains like this go in one end of the baby and come right out the other. They're not being digested at all.

It's is nutritionally poor. Rice just doesn't have a lot to offer your baby! It's fortified with iron that's hard for baby to absorb, and can further increase the constipating effects of rice cereal. Health Canada has even come right out and stated that the iron in rice and other infant cereals is hard to absorb as compared to the iron in meats.

So rice cereal - and other cereals - are not really good for your baby. They're actually pretty bad choices. Consider starting your baby with another solid food choice - one that offers a lot of nutrition and is truly easy to digest.

- Get some fresh air - this will do wonders for you head. If you're heading out to work in the morning, make sure you walk at least one stop before getting public transport and you will feel much better when you arrive.

- Avoid fatty foods - a hangover can often make you crave fatty foods and you might feel like a full English will cure your hangover, but you're best to stay away. Try having a substantial breakfast cereal with a slow releasing energy fruit such as a banana to help you get through the day.

Whole Grains Keep Heart Diseases Away

Whole grains keep heart diseases away

The role of whole grains in everyday diet has now been challenged and proved several times throughout the world. Regular servings of whole grains play an inevitable role in conquering over many chronic illnesses like Coronary Heart Disease, Diabetes mellitus type 2, cancer and stroke. Studies have shown that at least one serving per day of whole grains reduces the risk of heart disease by 36%; also an inverse relationship has been seen between the whole grain intake and mortality rates in older subjects.

What are whole grains?

As compared to refined grains that contain only the endosperm layer, Whole grains contain three edible layers- bran, germ and endosperm. Each layer has its own nutritional value and is equally vital for health. The bran is the coarse outer layer and is a rich source of fibre. The germ is the embryo of the plant and contains ample amounts of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and unsaturated fats. The inner endosperm layer is the central portion that is rich in starch along with some amounts of proteins and Vitamin B. The list of whole grains includes popcorn, barley, brown rice, bulgur, corn, flax, oats, quinoa, wheat, and wild rice.

Why are whole grains essential?

Whole grains are goldmines of essential nutrients including vitamins and minerals. They are rich in fiber that helps reduce cholesterol and prevent heart diseases. Recent studies have shown that they are a rich source of Polyphenol antioxidants - substances that help to rid your body of harmful free radicals, highly reactive molecules and ions that can damage your cells. The overall antioxidant rankings of whole grains per serving of cold breakfast cereal, in order, is wheat, corn, oats, and then rice. On the whole, a gram of whole-grain products contains comparable antioxidants to a gram of fruit and vegetables. Whole grains, in fact, are sources of complete nutrition in themselves.

Research Studies that prove

Several research studies have concluded the importance of whole grains for a healthy living. Results of a study that followed 75,000 subjects for up to twelve years showed that those who ate about three servings (about 48 grams) of whole grains each day had a 25% lower risk of heart disease and a 36% lower risk of stroke than those who did not make whole grain part of their diet. Similar studies have shown that consumption of three servings of whole grains per day leads to a 50% reduction of risk of ischemic stroke and a 18% reduction in risk of heart attack. In fact, refining of grains reduces about 93% of nutritional value including essential nutrients such as Vitamin E. Another study showed a decrease in total and LDL or "bad" cholesterol levels by 4.3 and 4.9 percent respectively following consumption of whole meal diet, compared to the refined wheat diet. Whole grains reduce weight, cholesterol and blood pressure, the three key factors behind heart attack thus helping the heart stay healthy.

Introducing whole grains to diet is easy

The idea of whole grains in everyday diet may seem to be cumbersome to many. Simple ways of including a few servings of whole grains to what you eat everyday could be:

Switch over to whole wheat bread instead of the white bread
Have whole wheat pasta instead of the regular refined one and brown rice over white rice
Select high-fiber cereals for breakfast, such as bran flakes, oats, or shredded wheat, instead of sugar-sweetened cereals, muffins or doughnuts
Another easy way to add whole grains to your diet is ground flax seed. Flax seeds are high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, which can lower your total blood cholesterol. You can easily grind the seeds and add them to your diet by stirring a teaspoon of them into yogurt or hot cereal.
Add whole grains like barley to soups and porridges
Junk foods like potato chips and fries can be substituted by popcorn- by far the healthiest snack available.

After a brief period of fashion craze that preached "Say no to Carbohydrates", Whole grains have reconquered its place. It has been now confirmed that whole grains have a vital role to play in keeping the heart healthy. They are valuable resources of nutrition and must be included as a part of the regular diet. Simple Little Pie

Thanksgiving is the best time of the year to roll out the pies. A few years back, I used to make about 6 pies, my neighbor's husband was in Iraq, and I felt bad that she had to spend Thanksgiving without her sweetheart, so I had my husband truck over an apple pie. My other neighbors used to give me Gilfeather turnips and I returned the favor with a pie, and still another couple who were on a fixed budget, I sent a pie. There is something so cathartic about giving.

Pies differ from area to area, I don't go to Oklahoma for a authentic Key Lime Pie, or to California for a Michigan Cherry Pie. My parents live in Maine and that is the farthest north you can get on the east coast. Maine is synonymous with blueberries. When I go to Maine, I want blueberry pie packed thick with tart Wild Maine blueberries, and for unexplained reasons the crunchy breakfast cereal Grape-Nuts has made it's way into pie from Presque Isle to Kennebunkport. Traveling south the Apple pie begins to make its debut. Vermont, New Hampshire and New York are prime growing areas for apples. Apple pie can be double crusted or Crumb, which is my favorite.

As we travel into Amish/ Pennsylvania Dutch country the Shoo-Fly pie is common. It is a mixture of molasses, brown sugar, cinnamon, flour and butter, some pies are considered wet-bottomed meaning there is a sweet filling and then a crumb topping, or dry-bottom the crumb topping is folded into the filling. The unique thing about this pie is that all ingredients can keep without refrigeration. The name came about by the bakers having to shoo the flies away, because the flies were attracted to the sugar.

As we cross the Mississippi River, heading south into Virginia, pie makers compete for the best Sweet potato pie, yams or sweet potatoes were cultivated in the area since the 1600's. The sweet potato is treated much in the same fashion as the pumpkin pie resulting in a silky spicy custard. Moving a little west we enter the Volunteer state where soul food like egg custard pies and buttermilk pies are popular, motoring into the Music City, Nashville has taken the custard pie a step further by adding sweet toasted coconut. The difference is they make a rich pastry cream on the stove, instead of baking the custard in the oven. Folding it with copious amounts of coconut and decadent whipped cream.

Georgia is known for their peaches, and what better way to celebrate Georgia than having a piece of peach pie, what is also surprising is that Georgia is one of the top manufacturers of pecans and pecan pie. The pride of Atlanta, Georgia is Lemon icebox pie, which is the northern cousin of Key lime Pie from Key West, Florida. It is made with lemon juice, eggs and condensed milk. We round out our Eastern seaboard pie quest with, of course Key Lime Pie. The key lime arrived in the Keys with the Spanish in the 1500's, and was described as a confused lemon. Having features of both the lemon and the lime. Surprisingly hurricanes wiped out all traces of the actual key lime. You now, must know someone who knows someone to get an authentic key lime.

In the Midwest, the area still has shadows of their resourcefulness. Settlers developed the land with fruit trees and Yankee ingredients were in short supply. In Michigan they have tart Michigan cherries, made into delicious to die for cherry pies. Pies used less flour than bread and cakes, and could be cooked in fireplaces. Hoosier pie or Indian sugar cream pie was a very simple dessert consisting only of cream sugar and flour. Persimmons and paw paws are made into pies in the Midwest. Persimmons are an unusual fruit in that they ripen towards the end of the fall, and have a pumpkin apricot flavor, is cooked in the same way as a pumpkin. Paw Paws were important to the native Indians and take experience to work with them. They are cross between banana, pineapple and mango and are used in custards. Honorable mention is the Bean pie created in Chicago, made with navy beans.

Pies that have no home or an area to call their own, are pies that are made all over the United States and each state can trace the history of such a pie. Pumpkin pie it is said to have been created near Plymouth plantation, however the pie has made its rounds all over the U.S. Lemon Meringue pie, is said to have originated in the South, however lemons are known to grow out west. Pecans lay claim to Georgia, but Texas might dispute that. Washington might be a little upset about the origin of the Cherry Pie, but I am sure Michigan will debate it. The grand daddy of the pie debate hands down has to be the Apple pie. Apples grow all over the United States, and every pie aficionado from California to Maine claim the best apple pie. It is up for debate! The important thing is that Pie was created. The pie that I am going to share is a blend of pies that I have created in my life. I love pie crust, however I love the cookie crumb crust better.

Chunky Monkey Pie

1 Keebler Ready Crust Chocolate Pie Crust
8 ozs melted semi-sweet chocolate
2 teaspoons Crisco
3 large ripe bananas
12 ozs softened cream cheese
4 ozs toasted chopped walnuts
1 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
2 tsps vanilla extract
1 tsp banana extract
1/2 cup marshmallow cream
1 tablespoon dark rum
2 banana cut in half lengthwise and sliced
1 tablespoon banana liqueur
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 oz of butter

In a sauce pan combine the butter, brown sugar and cinnamon and cook until the sugar dissolves, stir in the banana liqueur, add the banana and cook until the banana softens and browns slightly, carefully add the rum, and tip the saucepan until the rum ignites. When the flames die down, remove the bananas and cool completely. Take your ready made crust and melt only 6 ozs of the 8 ozs of semi-sweet chocolate and spread over the ready made shell and cool. Take your remaining banana, slice and layer over the chocolate painted shell. In a mixing bowl combine the cream cheese and marshmallow cream mix on high until fluffy. Add the sifted powdered sugar, vanilla and banana extract and mix well. Fold in the whipped heavy cream and completely cooled banana mixture. Spoon into the chocolate pie shell. Melt the remaining 2 ozs of semi-sweet chocolate with the 2 tsps of Crisco in the microwave at 10 second intervals until mixable. Garnish the pie with the melted chocolate and refrigerate. Cut and enjoy.

The 10 Worst Foods For Kids

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Most kids, if given the choice, would live out their young lives subsisting on nothing but chicken fingers. If those chicken fingers happened to come from Chili's, they might be pretty short lives. An active 8-year-old boy should eat about 1,600 calories a day. This single meal plows through 70 percent of that allotment. America, we have a problem.

Knowing firsthand the struggle with understanding what is good or bad since I was always the fat kid and then topping out over 500 pounds. I have analyzed kids' menu offerings at all the major chains, taken a hard look at packaged foods, and uncovered the truth about what this country is really feeding its children.

The bad news is that many of America's food industry titans are pumping kids' meals full of added sugars, dangerous fats, and empty calories. But, there's great news, too: Kid's meals tell us a lot about how adults will fare, as well. Read on for all the dietary disasters, and an equal number of drive-thru saviors, for everybody in the family.

20. Worst Breakfast Cereal: Cap'n Crunch (1 cup) 147 calories; 2 grams (g) fat (1 g saturated); 16 g sugar; 1 g fiber. Sweetened cereals are among the most dominant sources of empty calories in a child's diet. Aside from the added vitamins, which are mandated by the government, this cereal is an amalgam of largely worthless food particles and chemicals. Buyers beware: Most cereals marketed to kids suffer similar problems. Eat this instead: Cascadian Farm Clifford Crunch. (1 cup) 100 calories; 1 g fat (0 g saturated); 6 g sugar; 5 g fiber.

19. Worst Breakfast Pastry: Burger King Cini-minis with vanilla icing 500 calories; 21 g fat (6 g saturated, 5 g trans); 72 g carbohydrates. There is no worse way to start your day than with a combination of refined flour, sugar, and trans fats. What's more, studies show that overweight people who trade fast-digesting carbohydrates for more protein at breakfast have an easier time slimming down. Eat this instead: Burger King Egg & Cheese Croissan'wich 300 calories; 17 g fat (6 g saturated, 2 g trans); 26 g carbohydrates.

18. Worst Side Dish: Bob Evans Smiley Face Potatoes. 524 calories; 31 g fat (6 g saturated); 57 g carbohydrates; 646 mg sodium. Not even an extended bath in hot oil would wipe the grins from faces of these creepy-looking potatoes. When you're eating out, side dishes make or break a meal, and with more fat and calories than Bob's sirloin steak, this side falls woefully into the latter category. The lesson for kids: Just because they're smiling doesn't mean they're nice. Eat this instead: Bob Evans Home Fries. 186 calories; 7 g fat (1 g saturated); 27 g carbohydrates; 547 mg sodium.

17. Worst Home Style Meal: Boston Market kids' Meatloaf with Sweet Potato Casserole and Cornbread 580 calories; 29 g fat (12 g saturated); 780 milligrams (mg) sodium. What begins as beef ends up with 42 ingredients, including partially hydrogenated oil. What's more, the sweet-potato casserole is topped off with marshmallow, brown sugar, and molasses. Eat this instead: Boston Market Kids' Roasted Turkey with Green Beans and Cornbread 210 calories; 6 g fat (2 g saturated); 568 mg sodium.

16. Worst Pasta Meal: Romano's Macaroni Grill Kid's Macaroni 'n' Cheese 600 calories; 31 g fat (20 g saturated); 1,720 mg sodium. This dish used to be more than double the size and caloric impact. The chain finally cut down the massive portion size. Thanks, Macaroni Grill. (P.S. It's still a disaster.) Eat this instead: Kid's Grilled Chicken & Broccoli 390 calories; 5 g fat (2 g saturated), 560 mg sodium.

15. Worst Sandwich: Au Bon Pain Kids Grilled Cheese 670 calories; 41 g fat (25 g saturated); 1,060 mg sodium. Au Bon Pain turns a simple sandwich into a complicated mess, with just about as much saturated fat as 24 strips of bacon. Eat this instead: Au Bon Pain Kids Macaroni and Cheese 220 calories; 14 g fat (9 g saturated); 650 mg sodium.

14. Worst Prepared Lunch: Oscar Mayer Lunchables Maxed Out Turkey & Cheddar Cracker Combo 680 calories; 22 g fat (9 g saturated); 1,440 mg sodium. The maxed Out line is the worst of the lackluster Lunchables, with an ingredient list that looks like the index of a chemistry textbook. Oscar Mayer even manages to cram in 61 grams of sugar more than you'll find in four Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! Eat this instead: Hillshire Farm Deli Wraps Smokehouse Ham & Swiss Wrap Kit with dressing (1 serving) 260 calories; 11g fat (4 g saturated); 960 mg sodium.

13. Worst Fast Food Meal: Burger King Double Cheeseburger and Small French Fries 740 calories; 42 g fat (17 g saturated, 4.5 g trans); 1,410 mg sodium. Burger King's dubious double burger earns the distinction of being one of the fattiest meals for an on-the-go kid, with more than a day's worth of saturated fat for the average 8-year-old. To make matters worse, it's also loaded with trans fat and sodium. Eat this instead: Burger King Chicken Tenders Kid's Meal (4 piece) with Burger King Fresh Apple Fries 215 calories; 11 g fat (3 g saturated, 1.5 g trans); 440 mg sodium.

12. Worst Pizza: Cosi Kids Pepperoni Pizza 806 calories; 40 g fat; 94 g carbohydrates; 1,423 mg sodium. Before your child eats this doughy, oversized pizza, consider strapping two boxes of Mozzarella Bagel Bites to her stomach to see if she likes the added bulk, because that's how many calories she stands to absorb. You're better off ordering in even two slices of a 12-inch pepperoni pizza from Papa John's is only 440 calories. Eat this instead: Cosi Gooey Grilled Cheese Sandwich 269 calories; 15 g fat; 22 g carbohydrates; 314 mg sodium.

11. Worst Breakfast: Denny's Big Dipper French Toastix with Whipped Margarine and Maple Flavored Syrup 810 calories; 76 g fat (14 g saturated); 107 g carbohydrates. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and kids, after all, need energy to grow and play. But that doesn't mean you should let your children eat a breakfast twice in one setting. At this size, four French Toastix is three too many. Eat this instead: Denny's Smiley Alien Hotcakes with Sugar-Free Maple Flavored Syrup and Anti-Gravity Grapes 313 calories; 3 g fat (0.5 g saturated); 71 g carbohydrates.

10. Worst Frozen Supermarket Meal: DiGiorno for One Garlic Bread Crust Pepperoni Pizza 840 calories; 44 g fat (16 g saturated; 3.5 g trans); 1, 450 mg sodium. Another reason to read the nutrition label: The name says it's made to satisfy a single appetite, yet it contains a child's full day of saturated fat and a giant glob of trans fat in the crust. Whether fresh or frozen, keep your pizza crust thin and it's topping pepperoni free. Eat this instead: Red Baron Singles Thin & Crispy 4-Cheese Pizza 300 calories; 14 g fat (8 g saturated); 600 mg sodium.

So many times we have no idea what is in our favorite kids food. I hope this sheds a little light on the subject. I have done much more research and will be writing more articles highlighting other restaurants kids meals.

I used to weight over 500 pounds and since losing over 300 pounds of fat, I am constantly reviewing and learning what is being served to me. Best rule of thumb, ask, and see if your favorite restaurant has dietary guides available.

Sleep Problems - 5 Evening Snacks That Help Me Sleep!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For many of us with sleep problems the nights seem long and the days a time of irritability and tiredness. Getting a restful eight hours of sleep is something our body and mind needs and we deserve.

There are many ways to support the mind in getting the sleep we need. Relaxation from stress, a good sleep environment and the correct choice of foods we eat are but three such remedies. The third of these, the food and drink we consume before we go to bed, can have a major effect on the quality of rest we get.

We have all heard of foods that help us sleep and how eating certain things for lunch can slow down our work rate during the afternoon. Then there is the notion that eating turkey can, in some way, put us to sleep.

We have been led to believe that certain foods make us tired, while in actual fact what is happening is a chemical reaction within the body that is causing amino acids to affect our brain activity in such a way as to induce a sleeping mode.

The best example to explain this is the drinking of warm milk just before going to bed. When we drink warm milk, (I am not sure why it has to be warm!) the tryptophan it contains triggers the body to release melatonin, which is a natural sleep hormone. Some foods, it turns out help us sleep and others do the reverse.

The sleep inducing serotonin and melatonin are triggered in the body by the amino acid tryptophan, and serotonin is a neurotransmitter that slows down brain activity, like slowing down the electricity to the brain. The nerve traffic to the brain slows down, your brain isn't so' busy' and sleep comes much easier. Therefore, eating foods with more tryptophan helps build more and more relaxing neurotransmitters and this helps make you sleepy.

Foods high on the glycemic index are not a good idea as they release sugar into the bloodstream which triggers insulin which does make us sleepy but the side effects are that it produces a weight gain and often does not produce the correct deep sleeping pattern. So, the best evening snacks are eaten before nine o'clock, are not high on the glycemic index and contain complex carbs, protein and some calcium. Calcium is a helper in that it helps the process along. Obviously, dairy foods like milk and cheese are very good candidates!

Bearing all this in mind, here are my top five evening snacks that help me with my sleeping problems:

1. Cottage Cheese: this is light, easy to use and comes in a variety of added fruit flavors. Dairy products contain the magic tryptophan but also have the calcium and low glycemic value.

2. Sugar Free Whole Grain Cereal with Milk: again we have the dairy but this time with whole wheat cereal (whole wheat bread would have a similar effect) which is fairly low on the glycemic index but will trigger some insulin production which again will induce sleep without the weight gain problems.

3. Oatmeal Cookies and a Glass of Milk: by now you should be seeing the trend! The addition of oatmeal also helps a little with lowering cholesterol.

4. Half a Banana on Whole Wheat Toast: Bananas contain magnesium as you know but they also contain both melatonin and serotonin which will help us feel drowsy. The whole wheat toast will trigger some insulin production, as it is a carbohydrate, and this will also help sleeping without causing a weight gain. (...and also go a little way in lowering cholesterol.)

5. Chamomile Tea: okay this isn't a snack but add an oatmeal cookie and you have a winner. Chamomile has a mild sedating effect and is well known among the sleeping problems crowd. The oatmeal cookie triggers insulin but has some other good side effects.

These are my five favorite snacks, and although I am not a doctor or trained nutritionist, I think they fit the "sleep inducing foods" bill without causing other bad side effects, besides which I really like them! Yes I did leave out turkey because how often do I have turkey around to use as a late night snack!

Remember also that light meals are preferred over heavy and to avoid, the spicy, the fatty, the caffeine and the alcohol. Also that it takes over an hour for the tryptophan induced amino acids to reach the brain so don't leave it too late.

A little science and a sensible snack we really like, can really help with our sleep problems.

Do You Have Mice in Your Home?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When most people think of the top 5 creatures they don't want in their homes, mice score very highly. If the very idea of mice in your home, chewing on your cereal boxes and causing havoc alarms you then it's time to get educated about mice and their annoying habits.

Mice are small mammals that are able to squeeze into the tightest of spaces. They can live on breadcrumbs and other scraps. They carry over 35 different types of disease and can reproduce very quickly. A typical female mouse reaches sexual maturity at 6-10 weeks old and can bear a litter roughly 20 days after mating. This is why it is important to deal with a mouse problem as soon as you can. If you leave it or put it off the mouse population in your home could explode and with it the risk of catching one of the many diseases that mice spread.

Not many people know that mice can flatten their bodies and squeeze under the narrowest of gaps, perhaps even under your door if there is a gap there. You may think that your house is secure but in most houses a mouse can easily find a way in. It helps of course to block up any obvious holes, cracks or spaces where a mouse could enter. Mice can also jump a fair way if the need to and they can also swim! The common mouse is a very versatile creature and smarter than you imagine. Often people will sit down mouse traps and be surprised when the bait has gone the next morning leaving the trap still set.

So how do you know if you have mice in your home? Well the most obvious signs are mouse droppings and signs of chewing. Mouse droppings are small black pellets and may be located around sources of food like cereal boxes or in dark places like cupboards. Mice will chew to get into things but also to get nesting material, so keep an eye open for any signs of chewing.

Mice are nocturnal creatures and although than can be spotted during the day, you're more likely to see them at night. They tend to keep close to walls and objects as they feel vulnerable out in the open. If you suspect you have mice try sprinkling some fine flour or talcum powder along the side of a wall. Mice will leave tracks and this will confirm you have them in your home. You may also hear strange sounds late at night like squeaking or scratching. Keep your eyes and your ears open and you'll be able to pick up on some of their activities.

If you suspect you have mice it's time to deal with the problem. There are a huge range of traps, poisons and other devices available. These range from the traditional sprung traps to sticky glue traps and nowadays, electronic traps and repelling devices. Regular traps can be messy and difficult to set and glue traps don't actually do the job of killing the mouse. Poisons also have their problems. The best solution in this day and age is an electric mouse trap which delivers a fatal shock to any mouse entering the trap. There is no mess and it makes disposal a lot easier. Whatever solution you decide on I wish you the best of luck in dealing with mice. Just remember to deal with any problem quickly to avoid a large infestation!

Best Diets For Fast Muscle Gain

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you want to grow muscles fast then you have to make sure that you eat right kind of food and in right proportion. Food is very important in muscle building process. You have to eat properly and get complete nutrition required by the body. There are certain types of food that should be avoided while there are others that have to be taken in your daily mean. This article discusses these various kinds of food which are apt for muscle building and which are the ones that should be avoided.

You require stamina as well as muscle building materials to execute the workout sessions and transform the calories into muscle mass. However one has to be careful to select food which is high on protein and carbohydrate and low on fat otherwise you will land up saturating fat in your body rather than building muscle mass.

A protein based diet is best for muscle building. But one has to be careful to select food items which are rich in protein and low in fat. Protein based items include lean meat, dairy products, eggs, fishes, vegetables and fruits. High protein is essential for fast muscle gain and has to be consumed adequately. However certain products like beef should not be consumed even if they have high protein because they have very high fat which is not good for muscles.

Carbohydrates are also essential for muscle growth. Include items which are high carb fiber rich like cereals, whole grains, vegetables. Determine your daily calorie intake required for the muscle build up and include high carb products in your diet accordingly. Select products which have low glycemic index like spinach, cabbage, cereals, etc.

Some amount of fat is also required for muscle build up. These are known as good fat which actually speeds up muscle building process. Items with good fat are olive oil, flaxseed oil, etc.

There are certain products which help in fast recovery of muscles from post workout damages. Yogurt, if taken with fruits, help in the recover process of muscles. Almonds help to recover the body from free radicals released during workout sessions. Water also needs to be consumed in large quantity which helps in muscle growth. Your unhealthy snack habits have to be stopped. You have to reduce consumption of tea, coffee, aerated drinks as these kill your thirst for water. Munch on something healthy like fruits and salads when you feel to have some snacks between meals.

Various muscle building products like food supplements and certain drugs (legally approved) can be taken too if you want fast muscle build up. However before taking them, do remember to ask your physician for effectiveness and proper dosage of these drugs. Your body might be allergic to some while others might not work effectively in your body and it makes no sense spending huge amount on these without doing a research on their usage and effectiveness. Food supplements with high protein and carbohydrate content can be consumed.

One more thing which has to be kept in mind is that the food has to be taken in right proportion, not less because that might not give you required calories to burn into muscle mass and not more because that might result in fat saturation.

Is Your Breakfast Cereal Healthy?

How many times have you stood in the middle of the cereal aisle wondering which breakfast treat to purchase this time? The cereal aisle can be very overwhelming. There is sweet, there is crunchy, there is bland, there is whole grain, there is refined grain, there is vitamin enriched, and there is fiber enriched. Some have dried fruit, some have nuts, some have chocolate, some have peanut butter, and some have cinnamon. So how do you know if the cereal you are eating is the best one for your health?

Well the truth is, if you eat cereal at least once a day it can have a tremendous impact on your health. That is if you pick the right cereal. So which breakfast treat is the best alternative? One of the most important things to look for when choosing a cereal is that it is made from whole grains. Whole grains are great for our health because they lower our risk of developing diabetes and heart disease. They also reduce our chances of unnecessary weight gain. Once you find a cereal that is made from whole grains, make sure that it is also rich in fiber. Many of us don't consume the recommended daily fiber, so buying a fiber rich cereal will increase our chances of reaching that goal.

Some people believe that cereals made from refined grains are healthy for the body. But the truth is that refined grains don't offer nearly as many health benefits as whole grains. Some other things to look for when shopping for healthy breakfast is to find a cereal that is low in sugar, contains no saturated fat, contains no trans fat, has numerous health benefits and still tastes good. Because no matter how healthy your breakfast choice is, if it does not taste good you will not want to eat it; hence, find something that is healthy and delicious.

"start your day the left way, with anti-capitalism!" what I love about having this video on YouTube is all the different kinds of responses I get, and all the different interpretations people have of the material. I will not delete any political comments regardless of my personal feelings on them because I rather like the dialogue that it creates. But I will delete douchebags (don't insult those that disagree with you, idiots), hate-mongering, and Spam of any kind, all of which as I see fit. I'm not fond of authoritarianism, so please don't put me in the position of being the police of this post. Use your brains, express them clearly, and thanks so much for your opinions!

High Fiber Low Calorie Foods - Eat Healthily On A Daily Basis

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Today, many individuals strive for good health and seek to obtain advice from various experts as to what they should be eating. High fiber, low calorie foods in conjunction with a healthy balanced diet are generally recommended for most people, regardless of their age or state of health. If you do happen to have ongoing illnesses, such as diabetes, cancer and angina, then you too may benefit from high fiber low calorie foods as a part of your diet. It will not cure you, but it will improve the general health of your body and you will definitely feel the benefits.

Most people that adopt a high fiber low calorie foods diet as part of a healthy eating plan. This incorporates breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast usually starts with the best possible high fiber low calorie food of all - oatmeal. It is packed full of fiber that can really help the digestive system to function correctly and gives it an excellent kick-start to the day. You can add jam, chocolate or best of all fruit to give it some flavour, but oatmeal is the best start to the day that your body could possibly get! Most cereals are high fiber low calorie foods. However, you should always check the labels of any cereal before adding it to your diet for this purpose because some are packed full of sugar.

High Fiber Low Calorie Foods Can Make A Great Meal

If you eat a lot of junk food or are set in a routine then it may be hard to alter your eating habits to make them work much better for you. No junk food or convenience food is a high fiber low calorie food. They are all packed full of sugar, salt and fat, none of which are any good for you at all! It may taste great, but it will not do your digestive system any good and may indeed lead to extensive problems later on in life. The key to changing your view on high fiber low calorie foods is trying them. There are many that actually taste great. You are bound to find a fruit or vegetable that you like out there, even if there is only one!

Some foods that you would not think of as high fiber low calorie foods are indeed just that. For example, sandwiches are high fiber and low calorie but the nutritional content is dependent on the fillings. Having wholemeal or wholegrain bread is very good for you. Having tuna and salad, for example, will make it even healthier! Most people like this combination so why not make the most of the health benefits it has too?

Low Carbohydrate Food Lists For Fast Fat Loss

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It is important to note that food containing white flour and sugar are not allowed in low carbohydrate food lists. You may be eating plenty of food, but not eating the right carbohydrate foods that give your body the nutrients you need to be healthy. You may not be getting enough physical activity to stay fit and burn those extra calories. This article is a starting point for finding your way to a healthier lifestyle.

* Steamed winter vegetables with peanut sauce - The recipe is fast and easy to make, it tastes great, and it provides some of the most nutritious vegetables and is a real low carbohydrate diet.

Ingredients:

1/2-cup creamy peanut butter
4 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 cloves garlic
1/4-teaspoon cayenne pepper and water.

Mix all the ingredients in a small saucepan, add water and beat again. Heat until warm and pore over the vegetables. After you have thrashed up the peanut sauce, cut 1/2 pound of fresh broccoli and cauliflower into bite size pieces. Bring the water to a boil, insert the steamer basket with the veggies, and cook for exactly 5 minutes.

* Tuna or Salmon and Beans - This recipe is one of my favorites in low carbohydrate food lists that are low in GI.

Procedure:

Take one or two cans of tuna or salmon and one 15 oz soybeans with just 3.5 grams of available carbohydrate, washed and drained. Add 1/2 onion finely chopped, a few springs of fresh basil and parsley, dress with 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar and 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, and perhaps salt and pepper to taste.

* Hearts of Palm with vinegar - The tender hearts of the terminal bud or young leaf shoots of the cabbage palmetto is where heart of palm comes from. Hearts of palm can be used in salads and in main dishes, or deep-fried.

Ingredients:

1 can hearts of palm
1 white finely chopped onion and tomato
1/3 cup black sliced olives
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup olive oil
salt and pepper to taste.

Mix together all ingredients except hearts of palm. Refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours. Add hearts of palm to mixture, stir, and serve.

* McCann's Irish Oatmeal:

The first step is to mix all ingredients the night before in a small crock-pot. Simply, grease the bottom inch or two of the Crock-Pot using non stick cooking oil. Dump in 1/2 cup McCann's Irish Oatmeal, 2 cups water, some dried fruits, nuts or berries, and a pinch of salt. In the morning serve with sweetener, cinnamon, and milk, or soymilk. At the table add sliced almonds or a banana. There's no better low carbohydrate breakfast than this.

* Whole Control Golden Barley Cereal:

This recipe is one of the best in low carbohydrate food lists because it is perfect for people with diabetes. It is really easy to make, tastes great, and is certainly healthy. You can serve both the barley cereal and the oatmeal with soy milk, sucralose, sliced almonds, and cinnamon. The beauty of the Whole Control barley cereal is that, like oatmeal, it addresses blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol level.

* Kippered Herring:

Herring is one of the delicious low carbohydrate foods with essential omega-3 fish oils. Simply fry some onions in oil and when browned, add a can of kippered herring. It's that easy to make and is certainly a healthy diet for you.

* Sauerkraut Tacos:

Sauerkraut, with fewer than 2 grams of carbohydrates per a 100 gram portion is one of the favorite foods loved by each individual. Heat about 1 cup in a skillet. While the sauerkraut is getting hot, microwave 2 or 3 Morningstar farms sausage patties for 1.5 minutes. Then, add the sausage to the heating sauerkraut, cutting each into 4 pieces. Then, microwave a corn tortilla for about 45 seconds on a couple of paper towels. Wrap half or one-third of the ingredients in the tortilla and eat while heating another tortilla.

There are a number of low carbohydrate food lists that anyone can include in their diet. Also, opting for a low carbohydrate diet has been proven effective for most people who wish to lose weight. I strongly recommend you to try my low carbohydrate food recipes for fast fat loss.

Child Car Seat Safety And A Box Of Cereal

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Do you have a little one? Having a child is probably the most amazing event in anyone's life. Even before a baby is born, the parents start feeling a closeness and a protectiveness for that precious one that is about to become a real part of their lives. Once the baby is born, that protective nature kicks into high gear. After all, how can a defenseless little baby fend for itself?

For most people, the need for true protection hits home as they're leaving the hospital. A car seat is needed in order to get the little one home. And as with any product on the market, new and improved models are constantly being invented, thus making older models obsolete.

What do you know about child car seat safety? Are you aware of the current child car seat safety laws? A car seat that was once considered safe may no longer meet the standards of today.

And who would have thought a child's car seat would have an expiration date? Just like a box of cereal or a gallon of milk, they should not be used once they are past the expiration date.

While buying a car seat at a garage sale or even on ebay might be a great way to save some money, you need to be sure that the model you are buying for your little one meets current child car seat safety measures. That would also apply if you had a baby several years ago, kept all your baby things, and are now pulling that old car seat out of the attic to use with your newborn.

As unbelievable as it may seem, it is not uncommon to see a parent who has no respect for child car seat safety. There are people who still ride around in their cars with a baby in their arms. Not only is this unsafe for the child, but it makes the simple act of driving more hazardous.

There are many safety measures that are suggested for protecting your child, some more important than others. While some are almost frivolous and not so important, the key is knowing and acting on those that are the most crucial.

Child car seat safety is imperative for every parent to consider and should never be taken lightly. We all know and understand how dangerous motor vehicles are in the first place. Just imagine what could happen to your child if he or she is not properly secured. You would never forgive yourself if something happened to your child because of your ignorance.

Depression & Breakfast - Is Cereal For Breakfast Keeping You Depressed?

Not so long ago, on advice from a naturopath, I tried a low GI muesli with almond milk for breakfast. Supposedly healthy right? For the next few hours I felt like I was fighting to stop from drowning. My emotions dived to their darkest depths they had in many years. Had I not been aware of what I was normally like in the morning (when not having cereal for breakfast) I would have been ready to crawl into bed to hide for days, or worse... Thankfully the feeling passed by midday and I was back to my normal self.

When I have cereal for breakfast it makes me depressed. How come the Doctor doesn't know to tell me that? I haven't had cereal for breakfast for over 6 years. Not porridge, not low GI muesli, not flakes, biscuits or bubbles. Only 3 generations ago there was no such thing as a breakfast cereal but now most people can't imagine what you would have for breakfast if you couldn't have something in a bowl with a white liquid on it.

I am not suggesting that everyone skips cereal for breakfast (although I could probably justify it). The important thing is to find out what works for you. Some people do better starting the day with protein, some with carbohydrates. Try something different for a few days and see if your depression lifts.

You may notice the difference immediately and never want to go back. Make a note to check in with yourself through out the morning. Make an appointment in your calendar or set the alarm on your watch to remind you to see how your doing. Also, ask people who you spend time with in the morning to notice if you seem different as well.

So what can you eat instead of cereal for breakfast? Many cultures around the world do not have cereal for breakfast. Instead they have something to eat that would eat at any other time of the day. For example, left overs from the night before, baked beans, steamed broccoli, tuna salad, tofu and leafy greens, even an omelette that includes vegetables. And no, two pieces of raison toast or a blueberry muffin are not good substitutes. We're aiming for good protein sources.

What about asking friends for ideas? Do you know anyone from non-western backgrounds? If so, ask them what they have for breakfast - many cultures around the world don't have breakfast out of a box so there must be answers out there.

But what about the time it takes to prepare something other than cereal for breakfast? For the 9-5 lifestyle, being able to throw something in a bowl put white liquid on it and then bolt out the door saves time in the mornings. My question is: How important is your health to you? Ok I'll stop preaching from on high. Time is a consideration in the mornings and I imagine that having to come up for something for children as well only adds to the pressure. What about a large pan of scrambled eggs, a saucepan of beans, or a large salad with left over sausages?

What about the additional cost? Cereal is cheap but you get what you pay for. Are you currently paying for depression medication? If you can reduce or eliminate your medication by changing what you eat for breakfast then you will have freed up some money to buy quality food instead.

If you have a protein breakfast, what about calcium from milk? So, the dairy industry has you convinced that you can't get enough calcium from other sources, eh? If you want to try the experiment of not having cereal for breakfast for a few days, have it for you last meal of the day instead. I know it might feel like your back in college and have nothing else to eat but if you do well with higher protein in the mornings you will probably also do well with higher carbs at night. Try it and see - the kids will love the novelty.

Remember, its about finding out what works for you. We all have different metabolic types that require different ratios of proteins and carbohydrates at different times of the day. By varying our diet and noticing the difference in how we feel we can work out what is just right for each of us.

Calcium Lactate Helps Me Keep My Bones Strong

I have always had a problem with milk. Most people get the majority of their calcium from cows' milk but I never really liked the taste. I have had a problem using cow's milk to obtain calcium in my diet as far back in time as my memories go. Very often when I was young I would experience a sick feeling in my stomach after eating breakfast. This went on for quite a while, without knowing what caused the problem. Feeling sick and not wanting to eat during those times, was starting to effect my growth development. I was a very picky eater, and a lot of the time did not feel like eating. Feeling concerned, my mother took me to see doctor about my sick stomach, and eating problem. The doctor suggested that I might have an intolerance to cows' milk. He thought that I might be missing the enzymes needed to properly digest milk. There was also a connection with, consuming milk and any foods sweetened with sugar. On days when I had milk and anything with sugar in it, such as at breakfast, cereal milk and sugar always made my stomach feel sick. Drinking a glass of milk with toast and jam, or syrup, also made me feel sick to my stomach.

The doctor's suggestion was to try and experiment. Leave out milk from my diet entirely, for a time, and replace it with the use of cheddar cheese. This would provide a source of calcium, as all growing children need this element, for healthy, strong, growing bones. So instead of cereal, I had a cheese omelette, fried potatoes, and toast for breakfast. He also suggested taking a calcium lactate supplement pill to be sure I was receiving enough of that mineral. Calcium lactate is much the same substance found in baking powder used in pastries. To make calcium lactate, calcium carbonate is exposed to lactic acid. Then you get a white crystal like salt. This is made into pills. Although these large pills are not fun to take, it still beats drinking milk that you hate the taste of, and then becoming sick to your stomach afterwards.

The doctor was correct. I started feeling better shortly after going on the new diet. My appetite improved and the sick stomach episodes disappeared. To this day I am careful using milk.

Since a person afflicted with this problem is missing a key substance other people normally possess, unless you can replace what you are missing, the condition will not go away on its own. One good thing is that I am not, ultra sensitive to milk. I can have an occasional milkshake or sweet cereal with milk. The condition takes time to build up, to the point where I would feel sick to my stomach. I just can't make a regular practice of using liquid milk in my diet. I still eat cheese regularly in my diet. Occasionally I take calcium lactate to be sure that my calcium intake is not too low. Mostly I never have to worry about the problem, that made me so miserable as a child.

Discover the Best Way to Get Skinny Quick

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Here are some useful facts about how to get skinny, quickly and effectively. All you need to do is to have the will and the resolve to be successful and you will achieve a positive outcome.

Discover the Best Way to Get Skinny Quick

When do you feel hungry? Do you feel hungry first thing in the morning? If you do then there might be a very good reason for it. If you don't get enough sleep, your brain interprets this as being and energy deficiency. It then prompts the release of a hormone called ghrelin, which makes you feel hungry. Have you ever wondered why you like to eat sugary breakfast cereals? It's because they deliver quick energy, which is what your body is asking for. You get an unnecessary energy boost and calories you don't need.

Getting skinny quick is about understanding some of the mistakes we make in our daily routine. If we can eliminate some of these errors, getting skinny and staying skinny is not a problem. For instance, when do you eat? Do you just eat at normal meal times? Do you snack? Do you do both? Or do you eat for the sake of eating? These are very important questions to ask yourself because most of us eat the sake of eating. We are tempted by so many things during the working day.

Do you think you eat when you are hungry? You may be mistaken if you do. The reason for this is that tea thirst signal your body sends to your brain is very similar to the hunger signal. Very few of us can differentiate between the two, which is why we answer a thirst signal with food. Easy to see why it's important to understand the difference between these messages.

For many people there is no need to go on a diet. All they have to do is examine why they eat and when they eat and they will discover that they already know the best way to get skinny-and stay skinny.

The Unusual History of Popcorn Machines

Popcorn machines have been around for more than 4,000 years and have evolved considerably since. These machines now use electricity to heat oil or air to heat large batches of corn kernels at a time. You can even make popcorn in the microwave or over an open fire in convenient packages. The earliest machines, however, look nothing like they do now.

Primitive Popcorn Machines

When an ancient culture in New Mexico discovered that a certain type of corn would 'pop' when it was heated, they immediately designed the world's earliest version of the popcorn machine. They would heat fine sand in the fire and add the kernels into the sand to make them pop.

Other cultures of the time made a game of popping popcorn. They would heat stones on the fire as hot as they could and pour the seeds onto it. The people of the village would then gather around the stones and catch the grains as they popped and flew into the air.

Eventually, primitive popcorn poppers became more popular and the snack quickly became an important part of several cultures. Many 4th century Mexican cultures would include popcorn kernels inside their funeral urns as an offering to the spirits in order to secure a safe passage to the next life. Native American tribes that appeared years later believed that spirits lived inside the kernels. The natives thought that the kernels popped when the extreme heat would anger the spirits.

Years later, Native North American cultures created prehistoric popcorn machines as well. However, popcorn became a staple food rather than a treat. The Iroquois tribes would use heated pottery to cook the kernels and use them to create foods such as soup and an early variety of breakfast cereal. Others would boil animal fat and simply dip the cob into it to cook.

The Evolution Of Popcorn Machines

By the 17th century, popcorn had become a common sight in the household, and due to the increase in demand, the race was on to come up with an easier way to crack the corn husks. Blacksmiths started to make popcorn machines by fashioning metal cones out of flat iron. Then, they threaded a metal spit into the center of the contraption so that it could rotate over the fire to prevent the corn kernels from burning.

In 1885, Charles Cretors designed and created the first of a long line of popcorn machines in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Cretors owned a sweet shop and had purchase a peanut roasting machine that didn't work as well as it should have. He soon altered the machine and began selling his products in and around the area via traveling salesmen as well as through his store. Eight years later, he attended the Chicago Columbian Exposition with his new machine and history was born.

Popcorn machines experienced widespread growth during the 1900s. Following his success at the Exposition in 1893, Charles Cretors mounted his corn popper onto a carriage creating the world's first mobile popcorn cart and made the world's first electric version a short time later. When it came to the actual selling of the machines, Fred Hoke and James Holcomb of Holcomb & Hoke Co beat Mr. Cretors to the punch in 1914. With prices ranging between $400 and $1300, these machines sold like hotcakes until the Great Depression caused the company to cease operations in 1934.

Today, popcorn machines look nothing like their earlier counterparts. They are available in virtually any size and create many different flavors and varieties of popcorn. The sleek and customizable machines are everywhere producing popcorn in mere minutes.

Crock Pot Cook Book - Stop Eating Cereal or Fast Foods for Dinner

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It's easy to be too tired to start cooking after a day at
work and then resorting to either eating cereal, getting
fast foods or making frozen dinners.

One thing I've found helpful is to start using the crockpot
I had buried inside the cabinet. Using a good crock pot
cook book enables me to prepare nutritious meals before
heading out to work and having them be ready and heated
through when I return.

I told my friend about this who is a single mom and she
said her kids are thrilled now to have home cooked meals
that taste good and have nice proportion of protein,
carbohydrates and fat.

Here's a few tips to keep in mind:

1) It's recommmended to not put frozen food into the crock
pot. You need to defrots foods in advance so think this
out when you do your meal planning.

2) If you are using ground meat in the recipe it is good to
cook it first in a pan ahead of time.

3) Tomatoes can overcook and get too soft if put in early
so try to wait towards the end of the cooking time. This
holds true for zucchini as well. Check your crock pot cook
book for the ingredient list to think it through logically.

4)Don't peak at what you are cooking. When you pick up the
lead, you let heat escape and then the cooking time will
increase.

5)There are crock pots with removable bowls and using these
make cleanup much easier.

Enjoy your crock pot and be stress free now when you drive
back from work or come in from the kids' soccer games at 7
pm. You can avoid running in for fast foods and eat something
that you'll find satisfying.

Great Granola Bars and Cereal From One Basic Recipe

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Wild Honey, Pumpkin Seed and Chocolate Chunk Granola:
Granola can serve as a breakfast, a dessert, a snack and an energy food. It is a nutritious, energy-rich food that will fit into any healthy diet.

I recently learned of the health benefits of dark chocolate and by incorporating it into a great granola recipe, I became a fan. I've bought the bars, squares and the chips. Of those, the chips are the most convenient. Semi-sweet chocolate morsels contain less fat and sugar than some other chocolate products and still satisfy my cravings; After all, dark chocolate is a new health food. No kidding, look it up!

1/3 c. safflower oil
1 c. wild, raw honey
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
5-6 c. old-fashioned rolled oats (not instant)
1 c. wheat germ
2 c. unsalted pumpkin seeds
1/2 c. walnuts or cashews
1/2 c. brown sugar (optional)
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate morsels
2 c. golden raisins or other dried fruits

Preheat oven to 300º F and line two, 12"x18" rimmed cookie sheets with parchment paper, and then spray with non-stick cooking oil.

Mix together dry ingredients: oats, wheat germ, pumpkin seeds, nuts and brown sugar.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the honey (you can use virtually any honey in this recipe), safflower oil and salt. Here's a trick: If you lightly oil the measuring cup you use for the honey, it will come out easily.

Stir until warm and well blended. Honey mixture should be warm enough to pour freely. Add vanilla and stir again. Pour warm honey mixture over oat mixture and stir until well coated.

Spread the mixture on the prepared baking sheets and bake, stirring at 15 minute intervals until toasted and deep golden in color, about 35 minutes. Watch closely to prevent burning. Granola will not seem crispy until it cools completely.

Hearty Granola Bars

This is an adaptation of the preceding granola using all the same ingredients in the same proportions. Only the method is different. You won't be baking anything other than the rolled oats and possibly the coconut, if you are using it. Toasting the coconut is optional (it's done the same way as the oats and baked for about 10 minutes), but toasting the oats is essential.

Preheat oven to 325 F. Spray a large baking sheet (preferably one with 1-inch sides for easier stirring) with cooking oil. Spread rolled oats evenly across the bottom of baking sheet and give the oats a light spray with cooking oil. Bake until lightly toasted to a golden color, stirring once or twice. This will take approximately 30 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside to cool. Turn the oven off; you're done with it.

Combine the oats, wheat germ, pumpkin seeds and other nuts, brown sugar, and coconut. Any other dry additions, like dried fruit, popcorn or raisins, should be added now. (Reserve the chocolate morsels to be used as an optional topping later.)

Line a 9"x13" baking pan with lightly oiled parchment paper that extends up and over the sides. The overlapping material will be your "handles" to lift the bars out of the pan later. You can also use waxed paper or plastic wrap.

In a medium saucepan, combine the safflower oil, honey and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, to the soft-ball stage (forms a soft ball when drizzled into cold water). This will take approximately 2-3 minutes.

The degree to which this mixture cooks will determine the degree of crunchiness or softness in your bars. Feel free to experiment. This recipe reflects my preference for a medium "chew" and firmness in the bars.

Immediately pour the hot honey mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring until well distributed. While warm (not hot), press granola mixture firmly into the baking pan, using the overlapping parchment paper to protect your hands and help compress mixture. At this point, you can sprinkle the chocolate morsels over the top (optional) and in a few minutes they will melt, forming a nice chocolate topping that will harden as the bars cool. Let sit for about 10 minutes.

Using the overlapping parchment paper as handles, lift the pressed honey and oat mixture out of the pan and onto a cutting surface. Before it cools completely, cut into bars or squares using a heavy knife. This recipe makes about 24 bars, 130 calories each.
