Food Drying at Home - Using a Dehydrator

To put it simply a food dryer or dehydrator is in fact a low temperature oven with fan. They are made up of a container in which the food can be placed a fan that distributes the air that has been heated by an element within it. Certain dehydrators push the heated air around the container horizontally whilst others do it vertically but all will allow different amounts of foods to be placed in them.

Preserving as much of the nutritional value of the foods that they eat by gently drying with a dehydrator or food dryer is important to some people especially if they lead very active and healthy lifestyles. However, for the raw foodists among us who wish to avoid damaging their food through excessive heat this has been a standard piece of equipment in their kitchens for some considerable time.

As well as the people we have already mentioned using dehydrators so do people who grow their own produce and gardeners. At the most important time of the year (harvest time) they use these to preserve what they have grown and allow more room in the freezer and also reduce the amount of food that they waste. Plus a vast number of chefs in the world are finding dehydrators useful when preparing certain dried delicacies, garnishes and seasonings they incorporate into their recipes. Also when you want good quality dried food for when walking outdoors or on an expedition preparing your own rather than purchasing dried foods from stores is your best bet.

Yes energy prices are rocketing, but it will still prove more economical for you to prepare your own dried food with an electric food dehydrator rather than purchasing readymade. Most people who own a dehydrator tend to use it for drying out various types of fruit including the more exotic varieties such as banana and mango. Certainly if you have children and want them to eat more healthily then fruit leathers or rolls made from fresh dried fruit purees is a great option.

When it comes to what nutritious foods can be made in a dehydrator there are plenty. Of course we have already mentioned leather fruits and rolls, but for outdoor enthusiasts they can make complete dehydrated meals or trail mixes and snack bars. For others they can use it to preserve fruits and vegetables including tomatoes grown in their gardens. They can also use it for making vegetable crisps, mango or pineapple slices and of course not forgetting chewy or crispy banana chips. Plus some people use it for making meat jerky and a number of other types of natural snacks.

As well as dehydrators being used to preserve food this is a piece of equipment that is popular with craft enthusiasts who like to create dried flower or pot pourri arrangements. As the process for drying out the plants is very gentle much of the essential oils within them are preserved and so the scents are retained for longer. Also such equipment is used by hunters in the Arctic Norway and Canadian Rockies to help preserve meat. Whilst dried wild mushrooms which you gather for nothing can also be placed in to a home food dryer.

Having food that is packed with lots of nutrients but doesn't take up too much space is crucial to Arctic Explorers and Dog Mushers like Gary Rolfe. These people regularly burn the same daily amount of nourishment as a marathon runner when away. Such men like Gary use the American Excalibur dehydrator to allow him to take protein rich and calorie loaded meat jerky on his expeditions along with lots of good quality preserved fruit and vegetables. But it isn't just people like Gary who uses dehydrators to help meet their dietary demands when involved in extreme adventures so do mountaineers and expedition groups. In fact it is important to have a good nutritional diet when in extreme conditions as it could make the difference when it comes to you living or dying.

The American made Excalibur dehydrator is popular because the company has built a reputation over the last 30 years of making these good quality home and industrial stainless steel dehydrators that are of good quality. However, in recent years the popularity of the Swiss made Stockli which is an expandable food dryer has increased because they are seen as being reliable.

During the 21st Century nutritional health is a hot topic and we are all learning about the benefits to eating foods which have been naturally preserved. In the UK if you want to learn more about where to get the Dehydrator kits and more information on drying food then there are specialist health retailers online such as UK Juicers that can help you. When it comes to learning more about the subject of food dryers the most important book you should be purchasing is published by the manufacturers of the Excalibur dehydrator and is called "Preserve It Naturally". Also if you want to learn more about this topic in relation to outdoor activities then there is a book by Linda Frederick Yaffe called "The Backpack Gourmet" that you will find extremely useful.

7 Dieting Mistakes - Are You Guilty of One of These 7 Dieting Mistakes

Let's take a look at factors that contribute to a bad diet...

1. Skipping Breakfast

Many of us miss breakfast and fail to realize the critical importance of this first meal. Why? Because skipping breakfast slows down your fat burning metabolism. This makes your system sluggish and in turn makes it easier for your body to gain extra weight. I would start with eating a protein dense breakfast in the morning. So what does that look like? Well it's definitely not your typical morning breakfast cereal. Try eating fresh salmon and some veggies in the morning instead. This will sky rocket your metabolism for the day.

2. Not Drinking Enough Water

Are you drinking your 8 cups of water a day? Well if you aren't its time that you did. Did you know that water can improve your metabolism and fat burning process? If you don't drink much water, it is most likely you are dehydrated - even right NOW! Why is water consumption good for a weight loss regimen? Simple, it helps the body function at its most optimal level, that is, it makes it much easier for the body to burn unwanted fat.

3. Not Eating Enough Protein

Protein rich foods actually burn at a higher percentage rate during the digestion process compared to other non-protein rich food. 30% of calories are burned during the digestion process of food high in protein, versus 8% in carbohydrate based foods and 2% in fatty foods.

Here are a few great examples some High Quality Protein suggestions: eggs, fish, lean beef, turkey, chicken, low-fat milk, low-fat cheese, and plain-low fat yogurt. Add a few portions of protein to your diet a day and you should be able to see the difference.

4. Consuming Simple Carbohydrates VS. Complex Carbohydrates

Simple carbohydrates are the fast-digesting kinds, like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, baked goods, and candy which raise your blood sugar level quickly. This signals your body to stop burning and start storing fat, and forces it to use the excess sugar for energy instead. Processed carbohydrates are empty calories, unlike complex unprocessed types. Refined carbohydrates are low in fiber and can cause a high spike in your insulin. Carbohydrates should come from whole unprocessed foods which includes; veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds. These are the ones that are considered complex, and fibrous carbohydrates. They have a low glycemic level, meaning, sugar is absorbed into body at a much slower rate. This is exactly what you want. You don't want a flood of sugar to rush into your system.

5. Skipping Meals

Skipping meals is another culprit for slowing down your metabolism and making you store more fat. Fill your plate with high quality protein, slow digesting carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Waiting more than 4-5 hours between meals causes you're your blood sugar to bottom out, leaving you weak, irritable and tired.

6. Drinking too many Liquid Calories

A lot of people go through their day without even realizing what they have consumed. Many unseen calories can come from liquids such as pop, coffee, alcohol etc. Lots of mixed alcoholic drinks, besides taxing you liver, contain a lot of sugar e.g. Rum and Coke, or Sex on the Beach. Keep an eye out, and make a note of what you eat and drink. This will help you identify where the extra calories might be coming from!

7. Stress

Stress is the number one cause for binge eating and the consumption of sugary snacks. You need to find a way to keep your stress levels low. You can do this by performing deep breathing exercises, meditating, yoga and even working out. If your life style is too stressful you need to make adjustments, and take control of your life. Why would you want to be living an overly stressful life that will only get you to the grave faster?

How It's Made-Mascots

Today they will show you how they make Mascots! The term mascot -- defined as a term for any person, animal, or object thought to bring luck[1] -- colloquially includes anything used to represent a group with a common public identity, such as a school, professional sports team, society, military unit, or brand name. Mascots are also used as fictional spokespeople for consumer products, such as the rabbit used in advertising and marketing for the General Mills brand of breakfast cereal, Trix. In the world of sports, team mascots are often confused with team nicknames[2]. While the two can be interchangeable, they are not always the same. For example, the athletic teams of the University of Tennessee are nicknamed the Volunteers, while their mascot is a dog named Smokey. Team mascots may take the form of a logo, person, live animal, inanimate object or a costumed character, and often appear at team matches and other related events. Since the mid-20th century, costumed characters have provided teams with an opportunity to choose a fantasy creature as their mascot, as is the case with the Philadelphia Phillies' mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. Costumed mascots are commonplace, and are regularly used as goodwill ambassadors in the community for their team, company, or organization. PLEASE SUBSCRIBE!!!!

Natural Skin Care - Oatmeal is Not Just For Breakfast!

You may be surprised to learn that oatmeal; yes that wonderful cereal we enjoy for breakfast, (or maybe not!), is one of the best natural treatments for dry skin. Plain rolled oats, can be used to make a gentle and very effective natural skin cleanser, facial scrub, and soothing facial mask. An excellent multi-purpose skin care treatment, oatmeal helps to relieve dryness, restoring natural moisture balance to aid in healing minor irritations due to the many causes and sources of skin sensitivities. Minor skin irritations can be caused by sensitivities to the ingredients in skin care products, exposure to chemicals found in household cleaning products, exfoliation with the wrong product, excessive scrubbing or rubbing during the exfoliation process, and many other factors. Cleansing the face with oatmeal helps to soothe skin irritation and reduce discomfort.

Oatmeal, when used as a skin cleanser, actually absorbs and removes surface dirt and impurities while providing very gentle exfoliation, leaving skin smooth, soft, and clean, without soap. As a facial mask, oatmeal deep cleanses pores without irritating and drying out skin. And as a facial scrub, oatmeal gently but effectively removes dead skin cells, to reveal softer, smoother looking skin. In addition, cleansing and exfoliating with oatmeal provides the bonus of a natural, healthy glow.

To enjoy the beauty benefits of oatmeal skin care you will need:

- Rolled oats (not instant) - found in the supermarket cereal section

- Blender or food processor

Directions: Grind oats in blender or food processor until oats have the consistency of flour. Pour into a jar, cover tightly, and use as follows:

Oatmeal Facial Cleanser & Scrub: Pour a small amount of ground oatmeal into palm, and add a little water to make a paste. Apply to face and throat and massage onto skin. Rinse. Follow with moisturizer.

Oatmeal Facial Mask: Pour a small amount of ground oatmeal into palm, and add a little water to make a paste. (For a more moisturizing mask, use milk instead of water.) Apply to face and throat and leave on skin for about 5 minutes. Rinse. Follow with moisturizer.

Oatmeal Lemon Facial Mask: Add a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice to oatmeal and make a paste. Apply to face and throat and leave on skin for 5 minutes. Rinse. Follow with moisturizer. Weekly use of Oatmeal Lemon Facial Mask can help to bleach dark spots and freckles naturally. Lemon juice contains citric acid and vitamin C that functions as natural alpha hydroxy acids to help dissolve dead skin cells for brighter, more even toned skin.

Caution: Fresh lemon juice can cause a tingling sensation that may become uncomfortable. For sensitive skin, dilute lemon juice with an equal amount of water before mixing into oatmeal and applying to skin. If tingling becomes severe, rinse skin immediately with warm water.

Do not use Oatmeal Lemon Facial Mask after exfoliating skin.

Note: This information is not intended to be used to treat, heal, or cure any medical condition. Please consult your physician with any health issues you may have.

The Quick and Dirty Stock Report For Investors

My investor friends tell me that you should be able to give a three-minute talk on why you're buying a particular stock. I've listened to these guys long enough to understand that three things matter to them. You need to say how the company is positioned generally, how well it's doing its job, and whether its managers are thinking prudently about the future.

So how best to write this up, should you ever be asked to? Simple. First, say what your recommendation is, is one sentence. Follow with three detailed sections, called Position, Performance, and Management. And after all these, write your recommendation again, but this time express it as a rating-perhaps 'low', 'mid-value', and 'high'.

It looks like this:

CONSOLIDATED BINLEYS

Recommend buying, but only below $12

PERFORMANCE

(First, do your reading and have a long, long think about how your candidate company's product line fits with the world economy. Then consider carefully whether the government in your company's country is stable and benign for business.)

The world can't do without binleys. Historically, only breakfast cereal, diaper, and binley manufacturing stocks have risen absolutely reliably, even during wars and big recessions. CB is the only binley manufacturer in the world whose sales are climbing at more than 9% per year (which it's been doing for 4 years now). CB order books stay full because their product line offers specialised binleys for an unusually wide array of industries (underwear, SCUBA diving, telephone sanitation, and insurance forms), and they alone sell to both the commercial and military markets. In their development pipeline is also a scaled-down micro-binley, which should appeal to the gigantic hobbyist market, particularly in developing countries.

Binleys are made from Strombolium. There are only 2 blue-chip Strombolium refiners in the world, and the bigger of these, StrombolCo, with 77% of market share, belongs to Consolidated Binleys-CB has its own never-ending supply of raw material, in other words.

CB and StrombolCo are both Republic of Pottsylvania firms, that operate solely in that country, where raw Strombolium ore is plentiful. The Pottsylvanian economy is as stable as any in the west, currency and loan rates are forecast to change little from their present low levels, and coups, riots, or political racketeering are highly unlikely. Nor will the country be invaded, there being no diplomatic quarrels running.

PERFORMANCE

Price to Earnings: (average, I'm told, is 20%)

Debt to Equity: (20% good; 80% bad, because interest eats profits)

Quarterly earnings:

Chart trends for the year: (and compare these with the Dow, NYSE, NASDAQ, FTSE, and whatever board they use in the Republic of Pottsylvania)

Any change in volatility? (if so, read the news closer and revise 'Performance')

Earnings per share: ($2 is very good, my friends tell me)

Any dividend?

MANAGEMENT

(For this part, go read all the online analysis you can. Google the corporate officers' names, and see what the financial talking heads on TV are saying about them - even the rumors and scuttlebutt, for these aren't generally there for no reason.)

Dave Krankheit, CEO, is continuing his energetic pursuit of..., which paid off so well in the 1990s, when...; CFO Joan Deutschmark moves only when she has the Board's consensus on risk management, a trait which kept CB out of trouble when...; Operations chief Phil Page believes in agile business units that can adapt quickly to..., a tactic that doubled StombolCo's revenue in...

(And now the punchline)

My rating for this stock is...

See? Like any other kind of writing, investment writing can be clear and (I gather) complete. If you know more about investing than I do-which almost everyone does-then of course you should improve this outline. But keep it clear. I'm no investment counsellor, but if I had any money, this is how I'd want to be talked to about my own investing.

High Fiber Cereal - A Good Habit

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Simply put, it's a lot quicker and easier to make a bowl of cereal than it is to make a big, sit-down breakfast. In addition to being more convenient, cereals offer a person a healthy breakfast choice, since most cereals are high in fiber. While the primary ingredient in hot and cold cereals alike is some form of grain - whether it is wheat, rice, oats, or barley - some cereals have more fiber content than others.

Cold Breakfast Cereals Not All Good

When looking for a high fiber cereal, avoid cold breakfast cereals that are made with refined flour or grains, as most of the nutrients and fiber has been already removed. When choosing a cold cereal, the best way to make a good choice is to choose a cereal with very simple ingredients. Bran and wheat flakes, rice puffs, shredded wheat, and oat rings are simple yet tasty and can be enhanced by adding fresh fruit. Kid's cereals are to be avoided, since they often contain high amounts of refined sugar, food coloring, and preservatives. And, while many of them boast high levels of necessary vitamins and minerals, they tend to be lower in fiber content than simpler cold cereals.

Hot Breakfast Cereals The Ultimate

Many people prefer hot cereals in the morning, especially if they live in a region that has a cold winter. A great high fiber choice for hot cereal is oatmeal. The "old-fashioned" type of oatmeal, like the cold cereals mentioned above, contains just one simple ingredient: oats.

Obviously, you get a balanced, nutritional meal when you eat this kind of cereal for breakfast. One drawback, however, is that it takes some time to prepare. "Instant" oatmeal is also available on the market and can be prepared in minutes using a microwave. But be sure to check the ingredients list of this kind of oatmeal, as it may contain unwanted preservatives or chemicals.

Including high Fiber Diet cereal in your diet is more than just a fad: many studies by expert health officials have confirmed that consuming an appropriate amount of fiber each day is essential to several bodily functions. In addition to helping one's digestive system remain regular and healthy, fiber also helps regulate a person's blood sugar. A balanced, regulated blood sugar level is essential to maintaining a consistent energy level as well as an acceptable body weight. The good news is taking care of your body in this way never tasted so good - high fiber cereals are usually very filling and delicious as well.

Easy Homemade Hummingbird Nectar

Homemade hummingbird nectar is easy and fun to make...costs you less...and is better for your hummingbirds. There is nothing I would rather do than sit in my backyard, close to my hummingbird feeders and get a close up view of the hummingbirds as they feed on my homemade hummingbird nectar.

I have one feeder I hang on a pole next to my honeysuckle vines and put my lawn chair several feet from the feeder to watch as they feed on the hummingbird nectar. If I'm lucky enough to have more than 1or 2 birds I will hang another feeder somewhere else in the yard. Hummingbirds are very territorial and will try to chase one another away from the feeder and have it all to themselves. So an extra feeder somewhere else in the yard helps to cut down on the fighting between hummingbirds.

Homemade Hummingbird Nectar Recipe:

The main ingredient for my hummingbird food will be sugar. There are two main sources of sugar... cane sugar and beet sugar.  Seventy percent of the worlds supply of sugar comes from cane sugar and that's the type of sugar that I will be using to make my hummingbird food. Cane sugar is the common granulated white sugar that you put on your breakfast cereal each morning. Sugar is in the carbohydrate family. Carbohydrates are easy to digest and will provide a quick burst of energy....and this is just what the hummingbirds need to maintain their extremely high level of metabolism.

The next ingredient in the homemade hummingbird nectar recipe is water. The hummingbirds natural supply of water will come from dew and rain water. If you live in the city.....to match this natural supply as close as possible, you will have to get the chlorine and or fluoride out of the water. Removing the chlorine and fluoride is a simple process.....all you have to do is boil the water for a couple of minutes.

The last ingredient, that is found in store-bought hummingbird nectar, is red food coloring. But, adding color to our homemade hummingbird nectar recipe is totally unnecessary. For one thing, the red coloring of your hummingbird feeder itself is enough to attract hummingbirds to your feeder. And the best reason for not adding red food coloring to the nectar recipe is that it might be harmful to the hummingbirds themselves.

The red coloring (Red #40) has been banned in some countries due to its cancer causing properties. Wildlife rehabilitators have reported seeing tumors in the bills and livers of hummingbirds that have been fed hummingbird syrup containing red food coloring. So to be on the safe side just don't use the food color.

The formula for the homemade hummingbird nectar recipe is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Measure and add sugar at the rate of 1/4 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water. Bring your water to a boil and stir in the sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Boil for about 2 minutes and let cool before filling your feeder.

To save on nectar only add to your feeder what your birds will use up in a couple of days. In hot weather your nectar will have to be changed every couple of days. If the temperatures get into the nineties you should change it every day. So adding any more than what will be used up, will just be wasting nectar. You can store your unused nectar in the refrigerator for up to 2-weeks.

You will need to clean your feeder every few days. This can be done by soaking it in hot water with a mild bleach solution of about 10% bleach to water. This will prevent bacteria and mold from forming on you feeder as the hot weather causes the sugar to ferment. If mold should happen to form on your feeder you will have to brush it out. Be sure to rinse your feeder thoroughly with water before filling with your homemade hummingbird nectar.

Starting Baby on Rice Cereal

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There seems to be a lot of debate about the best time to start solids foods. Older schools of thought start giving there babies rice cereal mixed in bottles of formula or breast milk as early as 4 weeks old, while newer schools of thought believe that babies should start solids by 4 months of age.

If babies are introduced to solid foods earlier than 4 months old, not only will the baby's digestive system may not be able to handle it, but there is also a danger of an allergy and even obesity as the child gets older. It is safe to introduce rice cereal at 4 months old. Your baby should be eating more solids by the time he or she is 6 months old because breast milk or formula is inadequate for their needs.

Baby's First Serving of Rice Cereal

1. Your baby's first serving of rice cereal will probably only be about 1 tablespoon at first. Remember that eating food from a spoon is a new experience for your baby.

2. Make the cereal according to the packaged directions for 1 tablespoon of cereal. The consistency should be like yogurt and maybe a little thinner for some babies.

3. Offer more rice cereal each day until your baby is used to eating it from a spoon. Increase the cereal gradually over a few days to two tablespoons.

4. Once your baby has mastered eating from the spoon and is doing well, introduce other cereals such as oatmeal or barley, but be sure to introduce one at a time, waiting at least 4 days before introducing a new one. Studies have shown that babies need to try a new food up to 10 times before they learn to like it.

5. Once your baby has mastered cereals, then you can introduce fruit and vegetable purees! The fun has just begun.

You can mix cereal with breast milk, formula, or water. Breast milk or formula are adds a nutritional boost to the meal and is highly recommended.

An important note: Rice cereal mixed with breast milk turns "soupy" after standing for a while because the enzymes in the breast milk break down the cereal. It's still safe to use.

Honey Vs Sugar

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What are their differences?

Both sweeteners contain glucose and fructose. However, for sugar, in the process of manufacturing, the organic acids, protein, nitrogen elements, enzymes and vitamins in the sugar cane are destroyed, whereas honey, a natural sweetener, subjects only to minimal heating. Also, honey has certain beneficial antioxidant and antimicrobial properties which are not present in table sugar.
Here are three honey nutrition facts that will make you feel good about eating honey:

One:

One tablespoon of table sugar or sucrose contains 46 calories, while one tablespoon of natural sweetener honey has 64 calories. Though honey may have more calories, we actually need to use less of it since it is sweeter than table sugar. As a result, you may in fact consume even less amount of calories that you would with sugar. And in the long run even though honey is more expensive, it may be more economical than table sugar.

Two:

Compared to table sugar, honey has a healthier Glycemic Index (GI) which measures the negative impact of a given food on the blood-glucose level. The lower the GI rating, the slower the absorption and infusion of sugars into the bloodstream and hence a more gradual and healthier digestion process.

Three:

Unlike honey, table sugar lacks minerals and vitamins (hence it's been often called empty calories), they draw upon the body's nutrients to be metabolized into the system. When these nutrients are all used up, metabolizing of undesirable cholesterol and fatty acid is impeded, contributing to higher cholesterol and promoting obesity due to higher fatty acid on the organs and tissues. So the message is, if you are watching your weight, honey will be a smarter choice than sugar.

Knowing How to Read Nutrition Labels

Nutrition labels are on every food item that you buy in the supermarket. Many people take these labels for granted and never really pay attention to the information that is given there. Learning how to read the information is important, but knowing what the information means is vital to your health and well being.

Knowing what is contained in a product, of course, can make your decision easier, but knowing just what nutritional value each ingredient holds is more important. Each item will give the information based on a diet of about 2,000 calories so you have to pay attention to the diet example and the amount of calories and nutrition per item.

On each nutrition label, you will find serving size information, calories from fat, total fat contained in the serving, and all of your vitamins and minerals that are contained in the product. These items allow you to make the proper choice of whether or not an item is worth buying or if you should pass on it and move on to another item that has more nutritional value.

The serving size is important to pay attention. For example, if you usually eat 2 cups of cereal at breakfast but the nutrition label says that the serving size is 1/2 cup, this means that you will have to multiply the calorie count by 4 to get the proper information about the cereal. If there are 100 calories per 1/2 cup, then you know you are eating 400 calories per serving of cereal in the morning. If a large percentage of the calories is derived from fat, then you know you are eating a high fat food with little nutritional value and this could influence your decision about buying the product or about how much you choose to eat each morning.

You have to pay attention to the fat calories if you are watching your weight because they are the hardest to burn during your normal activities. If you are eating a high in fat diet, you know you will have to compensate for this fat intake by doing more exercise especially the exercises that help you to burn calories.

Reading the nutrition label as you can see is very important, but knowing exactly what it is telling you is more important. Take a look at the items you have at home and you may discover some surprises as you sort through your pantry. Eating a diet full of fat and empty calories could be the reason you are suffering from depression, have sluggish energy level, are fatigued, and have other illnesses that many people do not associate with their fat intake. Buying fresh and buying healthy should be an important goal for anyone who plans on living a healthier lifestyle. If you are having problems with your diet, check the nutrition labels of the food products you buy.

Something For Nothing

Everybody today wants something for nothing. Well, it ain't gonna happen, period!

What is it you get with free stuff?

You get what you pay for and that's a fact. Even some of the stuff you pay cheaply for is no better than what you can get for free.

Have you ever been to a lawyer and asked them for a cheap solution? You probably have wanted a cheaper solution especially when you got their invoice. Every lawyer, solicitor or whatever you want to call them tell you right up front (At least the ones I've had to use do), that they will take from you 33.3% of everything they get for you with their work.

So who decides what is cheap, or is a bargain?

You've seen all the signs, cheap oil changes here!
Newspapers delivered free or just pay for delivery!

Were you satisfied, I doubt it, because what one perceives as a great bargain in the literature or cheap is not something seen or can be touched. It is a personal thing.

Now in a bakery, it does not matter what type of bakery. It could be a donut, bagel, or a cake shop. It's still a bakery to me.

The bakery always purchased what we thought was the best ingredients money could buy. Yes, the bakery could have purchased flour a dollar or so cheaper and it would still have gotten a good product at a reasonable price to sell. But in the end it is your customers that will decide if your products are cheap.

They; your customers, will look at the supermarkets, (they all do) and gauge your products against a cheap supply, because supermarket products are a convenience and convenience is not always cheap.

Supermarkets are getting bigger and bigger. Why do you think that is? It's purely because real estate is getting harder to find and when they do it's costing them more and more to surround themselves with businesses that can afford to subsidize their rents.

In my last location, next to a supermarket, my rent started at $9.40 per square foot. Next door the supermarket was paying $6.00 per square foot they claim to be the anchor tenant. After four years my rent increased to $15.00 per square foot, the supermarket $6.50 per square foot.

Today, that supermarket is still in the same location, the buildings around have been torn down and rebuilt. The rents today in the other stores $23-26.00 per square foot and having a very hard time surviving, while the supermarket now pays just $9.00 per square foot.

Is food any cheaper because of their lower rental costs, absolutely not!

Now you drive further to get your groceries. Has fuel gone down, absolutely not! In fact it goes up in leaps and bounds at the whim of oil companies.
Quality products command their own price. Reputation is a part of that equation. Cheap should never even be associated with a good product.

A bakery I know of changed their sausage rolls from a pork sausage to a beef sausage. Their sausage roll trade has gone! Admittedly, they also cut the size and increased the price, directly after purchasing the bakery.

They also changed the bread production from a general bread supply to an organic only. It was also changed from an English style to an Italian style bakery with more canned goods.

Not a good move. There are more English born people around than Italian people.

Do you see what I am getting at here?

Cheap is a myth when everyone should be thinking quality.

The eye looks at the price.
Then says that's costly, but it looks so nice.
The heart and mind says, I'll chance it and you purchase the cake or donut.
And your mouth says WOW! That was great!

Just the way your eye's said it would be!

Now you have forgotten the price and you go back again for the same or something different, because the experience now tells you the price you paid was neither cheap nor expensive, but one you are prepared to pay to get the quality and taste you just experienced.

Less Fortunate

Every now and then I am struck with a feeling of despair and helplessness. Sometimes, we go through the entire year without thinking about those who are less fortunate. Most of us are struck with that charitable feeling around Christmas. Thoughts of children waking up with no presents to open, families going without a Christmas meal, all of these things that shouldn't be weigh on our minds during the holiday season. What about the rest of the year? Yes, there are some of us who try to do our part the entire year. Then there are some of us who never give it another thought. Like myself. I guess it is always in the back of my mind, but more so during the holidays. Through the year, I've participated in other charitable events, but it's not the same drive you get during Christmas.

I want to share a story with you. This event took tonight.

My husband and I went to the local grocery store. It was about fifteen minutes before closing time and we just needed a few items. Well, if the truth were known, we actually rode to town to pick up a six-pack. The decision to stop at the grocery store was a last minute decision.

In the store we were walking past the meat department. There was an elderly woman looking at a package of meat. She asked my husband if it was pork chops, and he replied, "yes ma'am." The woman put the package down and commented on how expensive they were. We all agreed and moved on.

We had reached the only check out line that was opened. There was such a lengthy line trying to check out. The aisle was so narrow that you couldn't even stand beside your basket. The elderly woman was checking out followed by a shopping basket, a man, our basket, us, and behind us was about four people. Everyone was chatting back and forth. I saw the woman place a gallon of milk, a box of cereal, a loaf of bread and a few can goods on the counter. After a few minutes I glanced up to see what was taking so long. I noticed the cashier roll her eyes and it was obvious that she was growing impatient. I wondered if she was just anxious to get the store closed. Whatever the case, I thought she was rude. The elderly woman was doing her best to count out her money, handing the cashier some bills and counting out her change.

The cashier was arranging the bills and was shaking her head. I wanted to say something but I was too far away. I then noticed that there was a verbal exchange going on between the two, but I couldn't hear over the chattering in the back of the line. Then I heard the cashier say in a stern voice, "thirty-eight cents". I saw the elderly woman look down and I attempted to inch up between the baskets with no success. I turned to my husband who was talking to someone else. I had this feeling that I knew what was going on. I didn't bring my purse with me so I reached in my back pocket, finding nothing but a piece of paper. I turned to my husband again but the cashiers voice caught my attention. She reached in one of the bags and pulled out the cereal. The elderly woman was looking at the floor. The cashier ran the box over the scanner and handed it to the girl that was bagging groceries. The girl immediately left. I knew she was going to put the cereal back on the shelf.

I looked around and the line was longer. The man in front of me was talking to someone also. I wanted to yell, "Wait a minute! We've got thirty-eight cents", but I didn't. The thought suddenly entered my mind that I would embarrass the woman. I watched as the cashier gave her back some change and she feebly picked up her bags and walked out the door. I watched her every step with a heavy heart. Once outside she walked in front of the large window and glanced back at me. I felt my heart stop. I wanted to run to her but I couldn't. She nodded her head at me and I gave her a half smile. She smiled and I turned my attention on moving up in the line.

We finally checked out and walked out the opposite door. In the parking lot I turned to see her sitting on the bench. I guess she was waiting on a ride. I stood beside my vehicle lost in my own thoughts until my husband's voice brought me back into reality. I got in the truck and glanced at her again.

My husband replied, "There are some really poor people in this county". I turned to look at him. He expressed his thoughts that he felt she really wanted those pork chops. I felt the tears building in my eyes. I told him what I had witnessed. He angrily replied that I should have told him that he would have bought the cereal for her.

I sat there a moment. I then asked him, "At what cost? To embarrass her in front of everyone?"

He sat there a moment and looked in her direction. I wanted to walk up to her and give her the five-dollar bill that he placed in my cup holder. I was afraid. I was afraid that I would insult her. I didn't know what to do. What should I do? My mind was failing me and my heart was hurting.

We drove off in silence as tears flowed down my cheek. Tears not only for her, but also for my ignorance.

As I sit here and type this I am not sure what the right thing to do was. I wish I had been right behind her so that it would have been easier to help her. My husband and I could have handed the cashier a dollar and I could have replied "Oh, I hate it when I leave all my money at home." Would I have thought about that if I had been behind her? I don't know but it would have been better than the outcome of this event.

I sit here trying to make sense of it all. The images of people chatting happily, the rude cashier, and this poor elderly woman. Everyone was so engulfed in their own moments that the pitiful scene went unnoticed by so many. Unnoticed except for me. I am so full of guilt, pity and strangely a feeling of gratitude. Gratitude for what I have. As I type this, the tears are filling my eyes. I am not trying to be selfish; I am trying to express my sorrowful feelings.

Sometimes we forget that we are so much more fortunate than our fellow neighbor. We must not forget this. I am heart broken that this episode had to occur to remind me of this. Oddly I feel confused and blessed. Confused for all that I have stated and blessed to know that I have so much to be thankful for.

I pray that if I ever have to witness this again, I will have the answers and act upon them. The scenes of tonight will be forever etched in my memories.

This unknown woman will be in my prayers tonight, as will myself. For I am not convinced my failure to act is justified.

Don't Become a Cereal Offender!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I don't believe it! I've just spotted a celebrity magazine cover with this title emblazoned across the front; 'I dropped 2 stone in a week eating cereal!'

The ex pop star in question gave an 'exclusive' interview to the magazine, claiming she gave up the curry and chips and just ate cereal for 7 days to lose her baby weight.

This kind of sensational claim really gets me riled!

I'm fed up of the media backing these damaging stories that give people false hopes and false guidance on how to lose fat sensibly and safely.

YES, eating cereal religiously, for a whole week, with no other foods, WILL make you lose a lot of weight quickly, but here's the thing...

The ONLY reason you'll lose that amount of weight is because you're severely cutting your calorie intake. ANYONE can lose a large amount of weight if they want to starve themselves in the process!

Eating cereal won't satisfy your hunger, it won't give you the required intake of quality protein and fats, it won't provide you with sufficient vitamins and minerals, and it will be as dull as ditch water eating nothing but cereal, day in day out! Why not eat the cereal box too while you're at it?! It'll be just as exciting!

What's more, most cereals you buy these days are packed full of sugar and saturated fats, the very things that cause you to be overweight in the first place!!

PLEASE do me a favour... Ignore these fad diets, eat more cleanly, restrict your alcohol intake and ditch those processed foods - 95% of the time.

Then, 95% of the time, you won't gain fat, you won't feel sluggish and you will see fat loss success!

Traditional Coffee Cake Recipes

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As with many other treats, coffee cake has evolved throughout the years. Nowadays, coffee cakes have been combined with a variety of fruits and ingredients, such as sour cream or banana walnut. However, one of the best coffee cake recipes remains to be the traditional cinnamon coffee cake. Here's how to make one.

Before starting with the actual coffee cake recipe, you should first gather the necessary ingredients. These include:

5-6 cups of flour

2 eggs

6 tbsps of butter

2 cups of sugar

3 tsps of cinnamon

4 tsps of bulk yeast

1 tsp of salt

a cup of cooking oil

warm water

Bundt-type cake pan

When you've already gathered the materials, you are now ready to start making your cake using your traditional coffee cake recipe. First, dissolve the yeast in 2 cups of warm water. Let it stay for several minutes. Next, add a cup of sugar, a teaspoon of salt and the cooking oil. Make sure you mix these ingredients well.

The next step is to add the 2 eggs to the mixture. Beat the batter until the eggs are completely blended in. Next, slowly add the flour. Start with a cup of flour and mix it until the texture is smooth. Do this with every cup of flour. When all the flour has been added, stir the mixture until the batter becomes sticky. Then, let the mixture stand for about 20 minutes.

While waiting for the 20 minutes to finish, start on the glaze. The glaze will give the coffee cake the right flavor. Melt 6 tablespoons of butter, and mix the 3 teaspoons of cinnamon and a cup of sugar together.

After the 20 minutes are up, get small portions of the batter. Roll these portions into small balls in between your palms. Dip these balls into the melted butter and cover it with the cinnamon sugar glaze. Next, lubricate the Bundt-type cake pan with a dab of cooking oil. Put the balls onto the lubricated pan. Finally, place the balls into the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 40 minutes.

During this 40 minutes, you can start brewing your coffee, so that you can have it ready by the time the coffee cakes are done.

After 40 minutes, take the pan out of the oven. Arrange the cakes and add some garnishing. You can also stick toothpicks on the cakes or even add icing or syrup. Voila! You now have your very own homemade coffee cakes! These are perfect for midday coffee breaks. Try this simple coffee cake recipe, and share it with your friends!

Ways For You to Supply Energy Quickly (2)

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It is very important to supply energy for your body so that you can have enough energy to work and to live a happy life. Here I list five ways for you to supply energy quickly.

1. More water and less alcohol

Sometimes we may take thirst as hunger. As a matter of fact, a slight shortage of water can make feel tired. At this time, to drink some water is necessary because it can make you feel better as well as supplement the energy you body needs. In addition, you should try to avoid alcohol as much as you can. Alcohol can make you fall into sleep quickly but it can influence the quality of your sleep. Even if you have sleep for enough time, you may still feel tired.

2. Take in enough cereal food

It is really important to maintain the balance of blood sugar if you want to ensure enough energy for your body. If you take in sweet food, you may refuel yourself at the beginning, but soon after you will feel lacking in energy again. However, if you can take in some cereal food, you can supply energy without making yourself feel tired again.

3. Take in some snack food

Wheat biscuits with peanut sauce, yogurt and a small number of nut food all contain a large amount of protein, fat and fibrin. These kinds of food can not only refuel yourself but also do good to your health.

4. Drink a cup of latte

A cup of latte that contains no caffeine and less fat is a better choice than a cup of instant coffee when you feel tired. The milk in latte can not only help to supply energy but also provide abundant calcium for you. Therefore, you can live a healthier life.

5. Have a check on your thyroid gland and blood

Thyroid dysfunction is a very important reason for anemia. It can also make you feel tired easily. Thus, if you feel tired often even with a good rest, you should consider whether you are wrong with you thyroid gland. You should go to hospital to have an examination. If you are diagnosed with such kind of disease, you should follow the doctors' advice and have some medicine.

Eat To Raise Metabolism Naturally

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Although there's no short cut to getting your metabolism going (regular exercise and a balanced diet are not optional), knowing what foods to consume to give your metabolism a bit of a boost may help you drop those last few kilos, and keep them off.

But remember that however good and healthy the food may be, calorie count and portion control still rule. And much research is still needed to prove the potency of foods, as well as how much you have to consume to have significant impact on your metabolic rate..

MEAT INCLUDING LEAN BEEF, CHICKEN TURKEY

Protein takes more energy to digest than carbs or fat and this additional energy needed results in more calories being burned just to digest and use protein. also, protein keeps you feeling full longer and builds lean muscle tissue, which needs more calories to sustain than fat. So it's a 3-pronged approach towards weight loss.

WHOLE-GRAIN CEREAL, OATS

Complex carbs require energy for the body to break down and use, resulting in more calories being burned just to digest the food. These food, says senior dietitian Farah DiBa Khan, also take more time to be digested, thus raising the body's metabolism.

VEGETABLES SUCH AS BROCCOLI, CAULIFLOWER, CELERY

Vegetables are high in fiber and bodies burn more calories digesting fiber than almost anything else. They also contain such few calories that the act of digestion in the body burns more calories than the amount of calories the food provides, resulting in a negative calorie balance. The increase in metabolism caused by eating negative calorie foods can help burn excess body fat stores and help with gradual weight loss.

SPICES LIKE CHILI, CAVENNE PEPPERS, JALAPENO

Various studies suggest that certain spices can increase the body's metabolic rate by raising body temperature.Capsaicin, which gives chili peppers their kick, increases heart rate, generates heat, and helps burn more calories immediately after a meal.

GREEN TEA

A study published in the American journal of Clinical Nutrition indicated that ingestion of tea rich in cathechins,a major component of green tea extract, leads to lower body fat and cholesterol levels. Green tea may also inhibit the fatty acid synthase, an enzymatic system involved in the process of converting carbs into fat.

Diet - Anxiety & Panic

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I think the old saying "You are what you eat" - is so true, when your eating junk, you tend to feel rather lousy. I can vouch for this!

I used to be a manager in a fast food joint, and because I could eat for free there I did. I was working 12-18 hour days, and I was expecting a bunch of junk food to get me through the day? NAH-UH!

It was during this job that I developed Anxiety and Panic Disorder, my lifestyle was so unhealthy on so many scales its no wonder I was so vulnerable to develop to Anxiety and Panic Disorder.

As I begun to change my eating habits, I noticed a massive improvement in my concentration and my over all well-being. I didn't feel as tired through-out the day and actually felt more keen to exercise.

I am no diet expert; I usually stick to the original diet pyramid. I start my morning with a bowl of cereal and toast. A sandwich for lunch (preferably salad with fresh ham, depending on how rich I am that week) *smiles* otherwise it might be the good ol' vegemite sandwiches, and usually a banana and a yogurt for through-out the day for morning tea or afternoon tea.

For dinner I usually have a variety of either fresh chicken, fish, seafood or red meat. Read meat being the most frequent. With steamed vegetables as steamed vegetables are meant to lock in more of the nutrients compared to boiling them. And as I've been told, the more colours on the plate, the better it will be for you!

This diet worked wonders for me. Of course at first it was hard to adjust to, I just didn't feel full, and I guess I was craving a cup full of greasy oil haha. *ewww*

However, a week or two later, my body had adjusted and then I could reap the benefits.

Best Breakfast Cereals For Healthy Weight Loss

Eating breakfast helps you lose weight. But not just any breakfast. A healthy, high fiber breakfast with plenty of fruit and whole grains is best. Choosing the best breakfast cereal can jump start your weight loss and provide the whole grain component of your healthy breakfast.

One side note before we get to the list of best cereals. What you put on your cereal is crucial too. You will get the fastest weight loss and most profound health benefits by following a no meat, no dairy, no eggs diet. Plant foods only. I recommend pouring soy milk or rice milk on your cereal. Read labels and choose one with little or no sugar, and organic if possible.

There are thousands of breakfast cereals. All the featured cereals below are high in fiber, have no hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup, and are low in fat. Here are the best choices for healthy weight loss:

Oatmeal - Choose plain oatmeal and add your own toppings. For the best of the best, opt for organic oatmeal. Supercharge your oatmeal with sliced bananas, blueberries, cinnamon, strawberries, nuts, and a little stevia for sweetness.

Kashi Nuggets - A blend of seven whole grains, malted barley, and sesame. This cereal is really crunchy and satisfying. It's also very low in sugar with only 3 grams per serving. Jazz it up with your favorite berries. It can even be heated in the microwave on cold mornings.

Barbara's Shredded Oats - Main ingredients are whole grain oats and whole wheat. A little high in sugar at 12 grams per serving, but a nice treat once in a while.

Cascadian Farm Multi-grain Squares - Like Wheat Chex, only better because they're organic and contain no preservatives or other chemicals. Low in sugar at 4 grams per serving and they taste great.

Nature's Path Pumpkin Flax Granola - Flaxseed is the only plant source of Omega-3's, clinically proven to help prevent heart disease. This granola's main ingredients are a mixture of organic whole grains including oats, wheat, and brown rice. Unlike most granolas, it's not high in fat.

Nature's Path Organic Multigrain Flakes - Very low fat and low sugar. Crunchy and satisfying, holds up well with the soy or rice milk.

What about more commonly available cereals from the big names like Kellogg, Quaker, and Post? Some of them are tolerable, but all have something to avoid like trans-fats, too much sugar, chemical preservatives, or not enough whole grains. If you can't find the brands featured above, at least read labels carefully and choose the highest amounts of fiber, lowest fat, and lowest sugar varieties. You can always order on-line if necessary.

What about added vitamins? A total gimmick! Adding poor quality vitamins to breakfast cereal has no nutritional value. You body only absorbs vitamins and minerals in their naturally occurring states from pure food sources like vegetables and fruit. Don't fall for this advertising baloney. Follow a whole foods, plant-based diet including a variety of fruits and vegetables each day and you will get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

The Perfect Wedding Diet

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I know how important it is for you to be in the best shape of your life for your wedding. I also know how stressful it can be. I also know that stress often leads to binging and over-eating!!! So, how do you stop that from happening? What is the perfect wedding diet???? Is there such a thing as the perfect wedding diet???

There definitely isn't a perfect wedding diet because you shouldn't even be DIETING!!!!!! Ok, so you think I'm crazy for saying that right? I mean how could you possibly lose fat and get toned without DIETING???

The answer is simply, you have to learn how to make the right choices. You need to learn how to eat healthy and moderately.

Your main problem during this time is going to be lack of time. You won't have much time to cook and eat, so you will make wrong decisions. So this is what you have to do.

You have to cook in bulks. You have to choose a day to do your groceries, and actually plan out before hand what you are going to cook so that you can buy those ingredients. Once you have your ingredients and your meals planned, take one day and cook enough food for 3-4 days. For example: You can make 2 cups of brown rice, bake 3-4 sweet potatoes, hard boil some eggs, grill 5 chicken breasts, make a big and delicious tuna salad, grill some turkey burgers, make a bunch of different veggies, etc.

If you do this and keep it in the fridge, you won't have to worry about cooking when you get home late from work and running around doing errands. It will also be good for the pocket, because you will not be spending money eating out.

Once you prepare all the food, all you have to do is think about what the upcoming day entails so that you can plan how many meals you need to pack.

What should each meal contain for the "PERFECT WEDDING DIET":
1. Protein: Chicken breast, lean turkey breast, fish, egg whites, fat-free cottage cheese.
2. Carbohydrates: oatmeal, cream of wheat, sweet potatoes, baked potatoes, brown rice, lentils, garbanzo beans, whole-wheat products.
3. Vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, squash, zucchini, mushrooms, etc.

In order for you to lose FAT, you need to speed up your metabolism. You can do this by eating a "perfect wedding diet meal" every 3-4 hours. This will cause your body to burn calories all day long because your body will have to work really hard to break down the food. Make sure the meals are small portions. By doing this, you will not CRAVE SUGAR, and you will not feel like you are STARVING! Yet you will burn a ton of FAT!!!!

Here is a simple recipe of protein muffins that you can pre-make and have them as in-between meals. They are super easy to make and they are yummy!!!

Perfect Wedding Diet Muffins

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Spray muffin pan with PAM.

1 Cup quick oat's Oatmeal
1 Cup Oat bran hot cereal or whole-wheat flower
½ Cup Zero Carb Vanilla protein powder
1 TBS Baking powder
½ Tsp Baking soda

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl and set aside.

In a mixing bowl add all wet ingredients.

1 Egg
½ Cup Egg whites
¼ Cup fat-free cottage cheese
¼ cup of Ezekiel cereal (optional)
½ cup un-sweetened organic applesauce
¼ cup 2% lactaid milk
1 TBS vanilla
½ Tsp cinnamon

Mix all wet ingredients, and then slowly add dry ingredients.

Fold in:
½ cup dried cranberries
½ cup fresh blue berries

Pour into muffin pan. Bake 15 minutes.

The Total Truth About Breakfast Cereals

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I saw a commercial the other day for Total cereal. They were showing the Nutrition Facts panel, listing all the vitamins that had 100% contained within the product. The announcer stated at the end of the commercial: "Kashi cereal doesn't have 100% of the daily value for all of these vitamins".

I take issue with this advertisement: They were definitely implying that Total cereal is more healthy than other cereals--Kashi in this case--because it has 100% of so many vitamins and minerals. And that's just not true.

True, Total does have more vitamins in a serving than other cereals. But this is not because Total is some fantastic and unique grain that is so packed with vitamins and minerals that it naturally contains all you need for the entire day! It is because the manufacturers added vitamins to the cereal. In other words, you can eat a bowl of Frosted Flakes for breakfast, take a multivitamin, and end up with the same nutrition intake at that meal as a bowl of Total. Okay, maybe not Frosted Flakes, because at least Total has a few grams of fiber... maybe Frosted Mini Wheats, or Grape Nuts, or Post Raisin Bran, or Kashi.

Nutrition isn't just about getting enough vitamins and minerals. It's about eating a variety of foods to get a variety of nutrients (while you keep your intake reasonable enough to maintain your ideal weight). Eating a bowl of Total is not a healthier option than eating a different brand of cereal and popping a multivitamin. It's not better than having a hot breakfast of eggs and toast, and then taking a multivitamin. It is, in fact, the same, because the makers of Total have added the equivalent of a multivitamin to their cereal.

Taking a multivitamin isn't a bad idea, especially if you know you fail to get enough fruits, vegetables, dairy, or whole grains on a regular basis. But it doesn't guarantee that you will be well-nourished: Only that you are less likely to get a vitamin or mineral deficiency.

There can also be a downside to eating highly fortified foods. How many people do you think limit their cereal intake to the recommended serving size? Most of the people I know include at least two or three 'serving sizes' from the label on the box, as one of their servings in the bowl! This means people who eat a big bowl of total may be getting 300% of the daily value for many of these vitamins. Then, of course, they are taking in vitamins naturally contained in the foods they eat during the rest of the day. Most of the time, getting 200%--or even 500%--of the daily value of a nutrient isn't harmful, but there are cases where getting "too much of a good thing" can lead to problems: especially with fat soluble vitamins; folic acid (in people with an undiscovered vitamin B12 deficiency); and some minerals. People rarely 'overdose' on vitamins from natural food sources, but taking extra vitamins in the form of a tablet (or as an added ingredient in food fortification, such as the case with Total) could result in quite large amounts being taken consistently over a period of time.

The best way to get your vitamins and minerals, of course, is by eating a balanced diet and including good food sources of these nutrients--what we call 'nutrient dense' foods. Fortified foods can mislead the consumer when it is implied that the food is a superior source of nutrition.

Can Folate Prevent Neural Tube Defects in Your Baby?

What are Neural Tube Defects?

Defects of the brain and spinal cord are referred to as neural tube defects. The most common defects are spina bifida, where the spinal column does not close, and anencephaly with failure of brain development. This occurs in 1/1000 pregnancies or approximately 3000 births per year. Neural tube defect incidence can vary by region in the United States. The highest incidence occurs in the southeast portion of the country.

Is There a Way to Prevent NTD?

Investigators in many studies have shown that multivitamins containing folic acid can reduce the risk of NTD. Supplementation with folic acid can reduce the risk of NTD by 70% in women with no prior history of NTD and 50% in women that have had 1 previous pregnancy with NTD. However, not all NTD are related to folic acid but rather some may be related to genetic, immune factors, diabetes, or obesity.

What Foods are Good Sources of Folate?

Bread/rolls/crackers and other enriched grain products, legumes, leafy vegetables, liver, breakfast cereal, fruits and juices are all good sources of natural folate. Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate (vitamin B9) that is found in the multivitamins. Women of childbearing age should consume 400 mcg to 800 mcg of folic acid before conception and throughout the pregnancy. Women with a prior history of NTD should consume 4 mg daily. Generally, enriched grain products contain approximately 140 mcg folic acid per 100 g flour.

Overall, it has been found that less than 10% of women meet the daily requirement of 400 mcg of folate per day. Women on low carbohydrate diets and those with malabsorption syndromes are at increased risk of folate deficiency. In addition, certain medications prevent absorption of folate such as beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, cimetidine, Bactrim (septra), and certain anti-seizure medications such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, tegretol, primidone, and valproic acid.

The availability of folate from natural sources varies depending upon the food source and the way that the food is cooked. Therefore, supplementation is used in pregnancy to increase the availability of this vitamin. The body is unable to synthesize this vitamin and depends upon ingestion. Being a water soluble vitamin, excess amounts get excreted in the urine and excess consumption presents no known risks.

What is the Mechanism by which Folate Reduces NTD?

The mechanism of action of folate reducing neural tube defects is unknown. Some cases are independent and some are part of a syndrome of multiple other genetic anomalies. NTDs tend to occur more frequently in women that have a family history and also in couples that have had a previous child with this disorder. The first 25 days of gestation are particularly important for ingestion of this vitamin since neural tube closure occurs from day 18 to day 26 of gestation. Therefore, preconception ingestion with adequate amounts of folate that the body stores is very important since the critical time for neural tube closure is so early.

Is Folate Important for Other Reasons in Pregnancy?

Folate is important for DNA synthesis, cell division, and amino acid metabolism. Folate is critical in the metabolism and reduction of homocysteine in the body which prevents cardiovascular disease. Folic acid is also believed to reduce the risk of cleft palate and other genitourinary anomalies.

Recommendations

Obstetricians and other health care providers of women in the reproductive age range should counsel their patients on the importance of folic acid supplementation during pregnancy. First prenatal visits commonly occur after closure of the neural tube so folic acid consumption should begin before conception and continue especially in the early stages of pregnancy. Proper counseling is especially critical in those patients with a previous history of NTD or a family history since recurrence risk is higher.

If you keep these in mind as you go through the instructions, you might have a less frustrating time. I no longer make a second glider out of the printer paper. It's just too heavy and I save time by just concentrating on the phone book paper one. I no longer cut the notch in the front. I just fold that part now. The center of gravity (CG) marks on the glider are starting points only. Adding more or removing weight shifts the CG forward or backward. This is very useful for dealing with stalling and diving. Instead of straws for boom and weight, I now use the thin wire that's inside "twisties," those bendy things used to close plastic bags and also to wrap various cords when you first open the packaging of electronic equipment. I strip off the paper or plastic part off with pliers so it's more aerodynamic. When taped on, I can fine tune the by straightening the wire for more leverage (more downward force to counteract stalling). Or I can fold the wire back on itself for less downward leverage (if the glider is diving). It's easier than adding or cutting off tape. When taping the wire on, fold that short, very front fold too, so the tape folds too. The two diagonal folds near the front of the glider—the ones that make the under curve (camber)--have to be creased firmly ...

Most Popular Cereals Make a Poor Choice For Breakfast

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Most common and popular breakfast foods are not good for you. In particular, cold cereal with skim milk is not a good choice to start the day. I know it is frustrating when you've given up the bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches or corn muffins for cold cereal and still aren't losing weight or feeling well.

There is a big misconception in America about what is healthy to eat for breakfast. The food companies have created this association that cold cereal that is low in fat and cholesterol is really good for you. They even put skim milk on the box to suggest that that is the best choice for the cereal.

Let me explain why most common breakfast cereals are just empty calories, full of sugar and sodium, with a multivitamin sprinkled on top. Even the ones you think are healthy, most likely are not.

Without mentioning names, let's look at one serving size of a popular and considered healthy brand of cereal (it's name starts with a C). One cup has 100 calories, 15 calories from fat, and 190mg of sodium, 3 grams of fiber, 3 grams of protein and 20 grams of carbohydrates. Let's assume you eat this with the suggested 1/2 cup of skim milk, which has 40 calories, 60mg of sodium, 4 grams of protein, 6 grams of carbohydrates and no fat. Total- 140 calories 104 calories of carbohydrates - 74% 28 calories of protein- 20% 15 calories of fat - 10% 250mg sodium 3 grams fiber

First of all, the calories are too low. One hundred and forty calories is good for a small child. Let's assume a woman will double the serving to 240 calories and a man will triple it to 420 calories. The best thing about this cereal is the fiber, 3 grams per 140 calories. This quantity of fiber is ok but not great. My recommendation for cereal is at least 4 grams of fiber per 100 calories. One of the worst parts of this breakfast is that the sodium is way too high. I recommend limiting your sodium intake to no more then 1500mg (1.5 grams) per day. Eating this cereal a man would be consuming ½ his sodium allowance in this one meal. Another problem with this breakfast is that the carbohydrates are mostly empty calories. The vitamins that are listed on the box mostly come from a multivitamin sprinkled on top of the cereal. In addition, this cereal is too low in protein and healthy fats. Most people would get a sugar rush and then crash with low blood sugar and be hungry shortly after. A better ratio for breakfast would be 50% carbohydrates, 25% protein and 25% healthy fat. That would make a lot more sense for holding off hunger, promoting protein synthesis and reducing body fat.

Keep in mind I picked one of the better cereals to evaluate. If I had picked one of the sweeter varieties that are popular with children, the numbers and adverse effects would be much worse. Here's an example of a healthy breakfast I recommend to my clients.

- 1/2 cup 5 grain slow cook oatmeal
- 1 to 1.5 cups water
- 1 cup blue berries
- 1 scoop whey protein powder (not just for body builders)
- 2 table spoons ground flaxseeds
- 1/2 oz pumpkin seeds

Total - 444 calories
- 26% protein
- 23% healthy fats
- 48% carbohydrates
- 14 grams fiber
- 70mg sodium

Don't do what everyone else is doing if it is not working for you. Try this approach to breakfast. I know it will work for you. Good luck and stay healthy.

MC Frontalot - Origin Of Species (read descripton)

This is a response to "This should keep Us All Thinking By nat21paris" just to show that some christians push their religion on people and can be just as biased as the fictional atheist proffessor in the story. It's sort of social satire that I just find hilarious but a lot of it is true about some crazy fundamentalists. example: "brought by the one true God, It's a fact: anybody else who ever had a God, their God's wack" I put the lyrics here too in case you couldn't read some of the more illegible lettering in the video. Lyrics from sweetslyrics.com Congregation, settle in your seats. The Reverend Front Aloud is on the mic and about to speak. I'm about to freak you out, make you shiver in the pew while I'm delivering to you my sermon and divinity ensues, brought by the one true God. It's a fact: anybody else who ever had a God, their God's wack. We ain't got to worry about 'em; we picked the right horse. You're in the right house of worship (of course), and forces are gathering out in the world to diminish our faith in ways radical and thorough, to discourage us from loving anything that's immaterial, to tempt our children with ever fruitier cereal, and worst of all, to call us idiots while they do it. My congregation, listen; I'm about to walk you through it. We're going to take the nation back from the heathens that's within it. We're gonna get the most egregious of the atheists imprisoned, cause a schism while we're at it, but emerge on top, and once we've purified ...

Cereal For Dinner: Is that "Normal"

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What's for dinner tonight? I bet it's not Raisin Bran or Grape Nuts, but why not? Research shows that whole-grain cereal is an excellent source of vitamins and fiber, and is low in calories and saturated fat. But in America, cereal is supposed to be eaten for breakfast. It's not supposed to be eaten for dinner. We can't do that. Says who? The advertisers, that's who. What if Kelloggs launched a "dinner cereal?" and put a lot of marketing dollars behind the idea? Certainly this "dinner cereal" wouldn't be different from any other cereal; it would just give us "permission" to steer away from the norm and do things a little differently. And I guarantee there'd be a lot less overweight people in the world.

About 7 years ago I put my theory to the test. I ate cereal for dinner 5 nights a week for about 4 months, and I can honestly say that my stomach was flatter than ever, I never felt full or bloated and I got used to it pretty quickly. In fact, I found myself driving home from work excited about what cereal I was going to have that night, and I looked forward to it. I discovered a healthy weight loss strategy that was quite easy.

Our overweight problem is largely cultural. Big, dinnertime meals are part of what we do even though research shows that consuming our largest meal at night is a big reason for our bulging waist-lines. Not long ago I read an interesting study about the timing of our eating. The researchers compared the eating habits of some community in Scotland and compared them to ours. This community was in a farming region and the people, on average, consumed the same amount of calories per day that we do, but they did not have a weight problem. The reason: Breakfast was their big meal. About two thirds of their daily calories were consumed in the morning and they ate sensible lunches and dinners - a natural weight loss method. In our culture, we consume two thirds of our calories after 5:00 P.M. The body's metabolism slows down significantly after 6:00 P.M. and our bodies just aren't burning all of those calories effectively.

Timing is everything. Makes sense, doesn't it?

In our world, we do what seems normal, what everyone else is doing. A family sitting around the dinner table eating a bowl of Cheerios with sliced bananas sounds ludicrous. It just doesn't fit into our cultural schema. But obviously something has got to change in our country or we're just going to keep eating ourselves to death. Try the cereal plan for a few weeks and see if natural weight loss happens for you. There is such a huge selection of good, healthy cereals out there so you don't have to worry about getting board. Dare to be different.

Finding the Perfect Rice Crispy Treats Recipe

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Rice crispy treats recipe ignites thousands of wonderful memories in me. It's a recipe that can sweeten dreams, throw tastebuds into a tizzy and send your imagination soaring. And this kind of uninhibited frenzy is just not restricted to kids alone. Grown-ups too have an inscrutable affinity for this all time-favorite dessert.

Stir Up Some Passion

The candy corn recipe is the perfect way to bring together some sinful ingredients- candies, marshmallows and crispy rice cereal. Here's what the recipe requires:

½ cup butter

10 cups crispy rice cereal

9 cups miniature marshmallows

2 cups candy corn

A few drops of yellow and red food colors

Set the ball rolling by bringing together the rice cereal and candy corn in a large bowl. Keep the mixture aside. In another large bowl, melt butter and marshmallows over low heat, until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Remove from the heat and add a dash of red and yellow colors. Mix the cereal and the melted marshmallows, stirring as fast as you can. Spread this mixture on a large, greased baking pan. Press down with buttered hands or a spatula. Allow it to cool. Thereafter, cut into squares and watch them do the quintessential disappearing act.

Just in case you are woefully starved of ideas for Halloween snacks, use this delightful recipe with minor variations. Replace the baking pan with a Jack 'O' Lantern styled pan, and watch the animated reactions that follow.

Fun With Flavors

Add a modicum of your favorite flavors and this dessert makes the stunning transformation from boring to brilliant. Here's how:

40 large marshmallows

½ cup butter or margarine

4 cups rice crispy cereal

A sprinkle of vanilla and almond extracts

Bring together marshmallows and butter in a large microwave safe bowl. Microwave for about 10 minutes, stirring at regular intervals. When melted, add in the extracts. Mix the cereal and transfer to a greased pan. Once cool, it'll be high treason not to succumb to their delightful flavors.

Homemade raspberry marshmallows, crispy chocolate cereal or peanut butter - there's no dearth of inspiration when it comes to creating the most delectable of all creations. It's only your insular thinking that can come in your way.
