The Truth about Sugar - Part 1 - Nutrition by Natalie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYzeCoH1Gjs&hl=en
Can I Lose Weight With Quinoa?
Although not a 'diet food', it is possible to maintain and even lose weight with quinoa by incorporating it into your diet in a variety of ways. Quinoa, now recognized as a 21st century 'super food' has exceptional nutritional benefits. There are many reasons to incorporate it into your meals.
This ancient seed food, native to South America, is a slow-release carbohydrate, keeping blood sugar levels more constant and energy levels stable. This alone makes it a great ingredient in weight loss diets. Also, most people find quinoa quite filling and substantial, so they eat smaller portions.
The quinoa seed is high in minerals and vitamins such as potassium, zinc, copper, manganese and B vitamins, niacin and thiamine. It is gluten free and non-allergenic. One of the only plant foods to contain all the essential amino acids, it a good protein source, with healthy omega-3 fat content.
Cooked quinoa pairs well with both fruits and vegetables. By pairing it with these essential and healthy foods, you will be able to create a totally complementary meal - carbohydrates, fiber, fat and protein. It can be used in cold salads, hot casseroles or pilafs, or even as a breakfast cereal, topped with fresh fruit.
Quinoa is not a 'fast food' but it is quite fast to prepare. It takes less than 15 minutes to cook, so the temptation to just microwave some prepared (and often high-calorie) dish can be avoided. The added benefit, of course, is it has much greater nutritional value, and you feel full longer.
Cooked quinoa can be kept refrigerated for up to 5 days. Keep some ready to use as a base for casseroles and salads instead of rice or pasta. Add it to vegetable soups or stews as a thickener, or even use it as a breakfast porridge.
You should also be aware of a further benefit of adding quinoa to your diet. It is essential to have a healthy balance between acid and alkaline foods. Since quinoa has an alkalinizing effect in our body, it helps keep our blood pH slightly alkaline, which is optimum for health and avoiding disease.
Quinoa, in summary, is a slow release food, helping you maintain even energy. It can be used in a variety of ways. It is easy and fast to prepare. It is a wholesome and highly nutritious food. It can help balance our body pH. For all these reasons, it is possible to maintain and even lose weight with quinoa as a part of our diet.

Skin Friendly Oatmeal Soap Recipe
Oatmeal is a delicious breakfast cereal taken with milk and/or fruits. It has been in the limelight due to its valuable health benefits and recently, as a recognized natural ingredient, it has also been found out to have beneficial effects on the skin. A good oatmeal soap recipe that can help protect and nourish the skin and can be used to remove dead skin is available here for you to try.
Ingredients:
1 bar of mild soap (a large Dove bar soap is recommended)
3 to 4 tablespoon oatmeal
4 to 5 tablespoon water
Procedure:
Finely grind the oatmeal in a blender or miller. It should be finely ground but not too powdery.
Using a cheese grater, grate the bar of mild soap in a microwavable bowl.
Add the 4 to 5 tablespoons of water to the grated mild soap.
Put the soap and water mixture in a microwave for 2 to 3 minutes on high temperature. The mixture will tend to rise due to the heat. Do not let it bubble over. When the mixture rises, stir the mixture before it bubbles over.
If the soap has dissolved, take out the bowl of mixture from the microwave.
Gradually add in 3 to 4 tablespoons of the finely ground oatmeal, mixing well after each addition. Add and mix the oatmeal until the consistency of the mixture and the proportion of the oatmeal to the soap are to your liking.
Pour the mixture into your molds. Suggested molds for oatmeal soap are muffin pans, small bowls or 1 inch height round tin cans (you can use taller ones but you will have to remove both ends and slice the soap into round bars once it is cooled).
When the oatmeal soap mixture has slightly solidified but still warm, remove it from the mold and let it stand to cool thoroughly.
When the oatmeal soaps have completely cooled, wrap or package as desired.
Oatmeal soap is a good exfoliant and can be used to relieve itchiness due to insect bites and dry skin. Aside from its beneficial effects on the skin, you can also add lavender or eucalyptus oil for aromatherapy use. You can also add a little goat's milk to your soap mixture that will make your skin soft and silky or add a drop of vanilla or cinnamon for a sweet fragrance. Adding cocoa butter will make your oatmeal soap a great skin softener with a natural chocolate aroma.
Here is another product you can match with your soap. To a 4-ounce bottle of unscented body lotion, just add around ¼ cup of finely ground oatmeal. Mix or shake well to make your matching oatmeal lotion. You can pack your oatmeal soap and lotion with a loofa sponge together to give as a nice gift or to sell.

Depression Meds - What Are the Options Available?
Depression meds come with a wide variety of warnings on the box so that you can have something to read as you munch through your breakfast cereal! Let us take Effexor XR as an example because it is fairly typical of the depression meds on the market right now. Side effects from this medicine can range from dry mouth, sleep problems, loss of appetite, nausea, sexual side effects, sleepiness (at the wrong time of day or night!) and general weakness. You have to ask your doctor all sorts of questions to find out if this is one of the depression meds for you. If you opt for a natural remedy for depression, you will not have to worry about any nasty side effects and there are no health risks or monitoring that have to be done.
Another alarming thing about depression meds is that the patient has to be watched for signs of suicidal thoughts, agitation, aggressiveness, irritability, restlessness and impulsivity. Even if you had one or two of the side effects I have listed above, it is enough to set you back and make you more depressed. Surely the aim of any meds for treating depression would be to improve mood and lessen anxiety. That is what happens if you opt for a natural remedy for anxiety and depression but none of the drug companies want you to know that and neither does your doctor in all probability.
Let us look at some of the other options available when considering depression treatment . You can opt for either antidepressants, tranquillisers, and mood stabilizers. These are the most popular meds for treating depression at the moment. There is also electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) which is for more severe forms of depression. You could try Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. This is where patients are trained to recognize how their thinking can affect their mood and they can learn how positive thinkng can affect their moods . If you opt for psychotherapy than you will have to expore with the help of the therapist aspects of your past life and discover what are the links which have led to your depression.
I know patients who discontinued with depression meds and they had manic and psychotic symptoms. It seems to me that choosing a natural safe remedy which uses herbs and which have been proven to be just as effective as the depression meds, is the way to go but that is a personal opinion. If you want to see why this could be a much more attractive option in treating depression, see the link below.

Food for Diabetics - Good and Bad Food for Diabetics
If you are diabetic, finding the right balance of food can be hard. This article will cover the different foods you should eat and avoid when you have diabetes.
Food to Avoid
Avoid food high in sugar, honey and artificial sweeteners. Use an alternative sweetener like stevia. Foods High in sugar include sweets and chocolate. If you need the occasional piece of chocolate (like most of us!) then try to eat Continental dark chocolate with at-least 75% cocoa solids.
You should also avoid certain types of vegetables including beans, parsnips, carrots and peas. All these are high in starch.
You should also avoid fruits including banana, grapes, strawberries and mangoes.
Avoid types of grains including pasta, rice, barley, corn, wheat and rye and foods that contain ingredients that end in ol or ose. These are mainly types of carbohydrates.
Foods to Eat
Foods you should eat should be high in fibre. A high fibre diet is very important for diabetics. This includes cereals, nuts, fruits, seeds and certain vegetables. Food with fibre in is good for diabetics as it reduces cholesterol and glucose levels.
You should also eat fruits that include grapefruit, peaches, lime and apples. Eat fruit and vegetables gradually throughout the day so your blood sugar level won't suddenly rise. You can also eat seafood of all types preferably boiled, steamed, baked or grilled - Not fried.
Eat white meats like chicken, fish and duck. Although you can eat lamb or beef once or twice a week. Eggs are fine for diabetics but try to avoid the yolk. Cheeses are also fine apart from cottage cheese.

Easy Crispy No Bake Nutella Cookies Recipe
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Are you a chocolate lover? Have you had chocolate no bake cookies made with Nutella?
You are in for a treat. No Bake Nutella Chocolate Cookies are hard to beat. They are quick, easy, and delicious. And the best part? You don't even have to turn on the oven to enjoy them!
Chocolate No Bake Nutella Cookies are different from regular baked chocolate cookies. They taste like a combination of cookie and candy and can be addictive, so be forewarned!
Have you experienced Nutella - the delicious chocolate hazelnut spread? It's much more popular in Europe than in the US, but if you are a fan of chocolate, you are going to want to seek it out. You can find it in most well stocked markets near the peanut butter.
Crispy No Bake Nutella Cookies Recipe
Ingredients
3 cups crispy rice cereal (such as Special K or Rice Krispies)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread (such as Nutella)
1/2 cup hazelnuts, toasted and chopped
Directions
Clear a space on your counter and line it with waxed paper or 1 or 2 silicone mats. This is where you will drop your crispy no bake Nutella cookies to set up.
Place the cereal in a medium-sized mixing bowl and set it aside.
In a small saucepan set over low heat or in a medium-sized microwave-safe bowl placed in the microwave and heated on full power for 20 to 30 second increments, melt the chocolate and hazelnut spread. Stir until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Pour the melted chocolate mixture into the cereal and stir until the cereal is well coated with chocolate.
Drop mixture by tablespoonfuls onto the waxed paper/silicone mats. Flatten each mound into rounds with the back of a wet wooden spoon. Sprinkle the tops of each cookie with hazelnuts, pressing them down gently so they adhere to the cookies. Cool until set.
Makes about 2 dozen Crispy No Bake Nutella Cookies.
Variations
For an even easier cookie, Instead of sprinkling the hazelnuts on top, stir them in with the cereal.
For Rocky Road Nutella Cookies, after you stir in the cereal, let the mixture cool a bit and then stir 1 cup of mini marshmallows into the mixture before dropping onto the waxed paper/silicone mats.

What to Eat While Pregnant
Image : http://www.flickr.com
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, what your spouse eats right before and during your pregnancy can affect the health of your growing baby. Even before she starts trying to get pregnant, you should take special care of her health.
Make sure she eats healthy meals and snacks and take a multivitamin every day. If you are both unsure about eating healthy during pregnancy, talk to your doctor.
Does my spouse really need to "eat for two?"
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, your spouse will need additional nutrients to keep her and the baby healthy, while she is pregnant. But, that does not mean she needs to eat twice as much. She should only eat an extra 300 calories per day. A baked potato has 120 calories. So getting these extra 300 calories doesn't take a lot of food.
Make sure she does not to restrict her diet during pregnancy either. If she does, the unborn baby might not get the right amounts of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Low-calorie diets can break down a pregnant woman's stored fat. This can lead to the production of substances called ketones. Ketones can be found in the mother's blood and urine and are a sign of starvation.
Why do pregnant women crave certain foods?
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the desire for "pickles and ice cream" and other cravings might be caused by changes in nutritional needs during pregnancy. The fetus needs nourishment and a woman's body absorbs and metabolizes nutrients differently while pregnant.
These changes help ensure normal development of the baby and fill the demands of breastfeeding once the baby is born.
Other Nutrients Does My Partner Need For a Healthy Pregnancy
Folic Acid: According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Pregnant women need 400 micrograms (400 mcg) of folic acid every day to help prevent birth defects. Folic acid is also important for any woman who could possibly become pregnant. Folic acid is a B vitamin that helps prevent serious birth defects of a baby's brain or spine called neural tube defects. Getting enough folic acid can also help prevent birth defects like cleft lip and congenital heart disease.
An easy way to get enough folic acid is to take a multivitamin every day. Most multivitamins sold in the U.S. contain enough folic acid for the day. But be sure to check the label! Choose a multivitamin that contains 400 mcg or 100% of the Daily Value (DV) for folic acid. Getting enough folic acid is most important very early in pregnancy, usually before a woman knows she is pregnant.
So, at least one month before your partner tries to become pregnant you should make sure she is getting enough folic acid. Women who are already pregnant need to get enough folic acid every single day. Another way to get enough folic acid is to start your spouse eating a serving of breakfast cereal that contains 100% DV for folic acid, every day. Check the nutrition label on the box of cereal to be sure. It should say "100%" next to folic acid. Orange juice, spinach and legumes are also good sources of folic acid.
Iron: Pregnant women need twice as much iron - 30 mg per day - than other women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that pregnant women start taking a low-dose iron supplement (30 mg/day) or a multivitamin with iron beginning at the time of their first prenatal visit. Ask your doctor what she recommends.
Prenatal vitamins prescribed by your doctor or those you can buy over-the-counter usually have the amount of iron your partner needs. But be sure to check the label to make sure. Pregnant women should also eat lots of iron-rich foods. Some good sources of iron include lean red meat, fish, poultry, dried fruits, whole-grain breads, and iron-fortified cereals. Pregnant women need extra iron for the increased amount of blood in their bodies. Iron helps keep blood healthy. Plus, your baby will store iron in his body to last through the first few months of life. Too little iron can cause a condition called anemia. If your spouse has anemia, she might look pale and feel very tired. Your doctor checks for signs of anemia with the routine blood tests taken at different stages of pregnancy. If your doctor finds that she has anemia, she will give special iron supplements to take once or twice a day.
Calcium: Pregnant women aged 19 to 50 years should get 1,000 mg/day of calcium. Younger pregnant women need even more - 1300 mg/day. Most women in the U.S. don't eat enough calcium. So many pregnant women will have to change their diets to get their fill of this important mineral. Low-fat or non-fat milk, yogurt, cheese or other dairy products are great sources of calcium. Eating green leafy vegetables and calcium-fortified foods like orange juice and breakfast cereal can also provide calcium. If your partner's diet is not providing 1,000 mg/day of calcium, talk to your doctor about taking a calcium supplement.
Water: Pregnant women should drink at least six eight-ounce glasses of water per day. Plus, pregnant women should drink another glass of water for each hour of activity. Water plays a key role in your partner's diet during pregnancy. It carries the nutrients from the food she eats to your baby. It also helps prevent constipation, hemorrhoids, excessive swelling, and urinary tract or bladder infections. Drinking enough water, especially in the last trimester, prevents dehydration. Not getting enough water can lead to premature or early labor. Juices also contain water.
But juice also has a lot of calories that can cause one to gain extra weight. Coffee, soft drinks, and teas with caffeine actually reduce the amount of fluid in the body. So caffeinated drinks do not count towards the total amount of water your spouse needs every day.

Living Without Sugar - 3 Breakfast Ideas to Give You Energy Whilst Still Pleasing Your Sweet Tooth
Many of us prefer sweet foods for breakfast. But now your doctor said you mustn't have sugar any more, or you yourself decided you need to cut it out because you want to lose weight? For many people, and I admit I'm one of them, it's unthinkable to live without sugar. We know, we don't need it, but it somehow adds pleasure to our life. Sugary foods are luxuries we don't want to give up. So, what if you have to because your health demands it?
First of all, think about when you have sugar
as an energy booster to wake up in the morning
as a life saving snack when your energy level is running low
sweet foods like cookies, cakes and chocolates for pure indulgence
How sugar gives you energy
Let's focus on the first two aspects: sugar for energy. It's true that plain sugar, because it's absorbed very fast, in the stomach already, gives you a very quick energy boost. But after a very short time, this effect wears off, and you need more.
Did you know that carbohydrates as you find them in starchy foods like bread, pasta, potatoes and rice are way better energy providers, especially the complex carbs found in whole grain products? They are released and absorbed slower and over a longer period, thus giving you energy for hours instead of minutes.
Sweet sugar-free breakfast ideas
Instead of loading your breakfast with sugar, try this great strategy: Use fruity foods to satisfy your sweet tooth, and starchy foods to give you lasting energy for the day. Especially whole grain cereals or bread will do a great job. Your breakfast could look like this:
The cereal breakfast:
1 glass of orange juice (freshly squeezed, or the 100% unsweetened fruit juice out of the box)
a bowl of whole grain cereal with low fat milk
1 banana, or half a handful dried fruit mixed into the porridge
The sandwich breakfast:
1 glass of orange or other fruit juice
1 whole grain roll with jam (jam should be sugar reduced, if possible made with natural sweeteners) or honey
1 fruit
The meal-like breakfast:
1 small pancake, 2 small waffles or 2 muffins (use whole grain flour and make sure you don't use sugar, if you want to sweeten it, use honey)
fruit salad (without sugar added)
a small bowl of low fat yogurt
1 glass of fruit juice
You see, there are many ways to have a lovely sweet breakfast without sugar. The only sugar you find in these breakfast ideas is fruit sugar, which is doing much less harm to your body than the plain sugar, and honey which is healthier too. Be aware that when using honey, you only need half the amount than if using sugar as it is sweeter, and dried fruit contains more fruit sugar than the same amount of fresh fruit. But all it takes are some small changes, and you got a healthy sugar-free breakfast which won't make you miss sugar at all.

Tips on How to Prevent Breakfast Cereals Kick-Starting Your Fat Storing Mechanism
Image : http://www.flickr.com
The nations favourite and most popular breakfast foods are breakfast cereals. The problem with breakfast cereals is that they are high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates have an insulin provoking effect that can cause weight gain. To stabilise blood sugar levels protein and good fats need to be consumed alongside carbohydrates. Following are tips on how to add protein and good fats to your favourite breakfast cereal. This will not only give you a balanced diet with less of an insulin response but will also satisfy you for longer between meals.
The minimum you need to do is make sure you are not eating sugarcoated cereals with hydrogenated oil. Hydrogenated oil is used as a preservative to save the food company money by giving the cereal a longer shelf life. They are very unhealthy for your arteries and increase the size of your fat cells.
The next best thing is to eat gluten free cereals for easier digestion. Wheat and foods containing gluten can be very hard to digest and intolerance to these foods can cause gut inflammation as well as other allergies. Try eliminating gluten for 30 days to see if it makes a difference to the way you look and feel.
The easiest ways to add protein to cereals is to mix 1-2 scoops of whey protein powder to natural yoghurt and a little water. This is your milk substitute. Including a tbsp of flaxseed oil or flaxseed powder will add some good fat to the meal.
When eating breakfast cereals I prefer wholegrain puffed rice cereals, these are gluten free and sugar free with no nasty artificial ingredients. I mix whey protein with natural yoghurt; I use different flavoured yoghurts for variety. I then add a little water to make the yoghurt a little runny. You could use Greek yoghurt for a creamier taste. I always add flaxseed oil; I use organic oil for premium quality. This is the best way I have found to eat breakfast cereals for a more satisfying feeling and a much healthier way than the traditional method of adding pasteurised milk.
The pasteurisation process kills the important enzymes as well as destroying vitamins and amino acids. Commercial milk contains antibiotics and growth hormones. Lactose intolerance, which is common food intolerance, prevents the body from digesting milk sugars. Milk causes an estimated 50% of the adult population's bloating, gas, cramping and diarrhea. What about getting calcium in the diet? It is possible to obtain all your calcium from dark green vegetables, where do you think the cow gets theirs from? Yoghurt contains more calcium than milk and is easier to assimilate.

Food - Cereals
Image : http://www.flickr.com
They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, if that's true, some of these breakfast cereal manufacturers need to get on the stick, at least according to most nutritionists. We'll take a look at some of what's available to a typical family.
The sad truth is, most breakfast cereals are pretty much empty calories, at least the ones you buy in a box. Oh, there are exceptions but you really have to look for them as the most common breakfast cereals are pretty much marketed for children. To see how true this is, one only needs to walk down the cereal aisle in your local supermarket and take a look at some of the more popular titles.
If you've been watching TV since the 1960s you have certainly heard Tony The Tiger scream, "They're Great!" He is of course talking about Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes. This is one cereal that could send a child into a sugar stroke without even blinking an eye. It's no wonder kids are hyper in school all day. And of course the list of these kids cereals goes on forever with titles like "Sugar Pops", "Sugar Smacks", "Corn Pops", "Count Chocula", "Frankenberry", "Booberry", "Cocoa Pebbles", "Captain Crunch", "Cheerios", "Honey Nut Cheerios", "Trix", "Lucky Charms" and on and on and on. It's like an army invasion just checking out each box, one with more sugar than the other.
Fortunately, there are some decent cereals out there. For the health nut there are some fairly nutritious titles like "Golean", "Golean Crunch", "Wheaties", "Cream Of Wheat", "Farina" and other similar types. These cereals don't have nearly as much sugar as the kid tested variety and many of them are even high in fiber like Kashi's Golean and Golean Crunch which have ten and eight grams of fiber respectively. They still have a small amount of sugar but in comparison to the kid cereals, they're much better.
Of course there are your hot and cold cereals. Most of the ones mentioned above are your out of the box, throw on a little milk and some fruit cold variety. But on a cold winter day there is nothing like a nice hot bowl of cream of wheat or farina. If you want something really fast there is the whole Quaker Oats line of oatmeal cereals. All of these come with a different kind of flavoring added like maple brown sugar, apples, peaches and cream and others. These are easy to make. Just open the package, throw it in a cup or bowl, add some water and pop it in the microwave. In about one minute you've got yourself a hot cup of oatmeal. The packages are small and don't really make a lot so if you have a big appetite you may want to make a couple of these.
Eventually, breakfast cereal manufacturers are going to realize that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day and they're going to start making cereals that you won't mind your kid eating first thing in the morning.

Special K Diet - Is It An Effective Diet Plan?
The Special K diet has been heavily promoted by Kellogg's over the last few years as a great way to lose weight. In fact, the company boasts that you can lose 6 pounds in 2 weeks. But, does this really work? Is this a diet plan that everyone should try? Here's a closer look.
What Is The special K Diet?
The basics behind this diet are pretty simple. You are told to eat one bowl of any brand of special K cereal with 2/3 cup of skim milk. You are to eat this, along with a serving of fruit, for 2 meals each day.
Your 3rd meal can be whatever you would like. Snacks can be eaten during the day, but only if they are fruit, Special K bars, or fresh vegetables. You can also drink anything you want, but water is recommended.
How Does It Help You Lose Weight?
The Special K diet is another in a long line of low fat, high carb diets. But substituting a bowl of Special k for a fast food lunch, you will naturally be eating fewer calories and fat. And that's the real premise here.
People lose weight when they eat less and take in fewer calories and fat each day. That isn't hard to understand.
Will You Lose 6 Pounds In 2 Weeks?
If you stick to this diet plan just like it directs you, I believe you can lose 6 pounds in 2 weeks. With that said though, the Special K diet will be difficult to stay on for any length of time. How many people can continue to eat 2 bowls of the same cereal every day, day in and day out? It's only natural that you will get burned out quickly.
Parts of the diet are right on the money as far as losing weight goes. Eating fresh fruit and vegetables during the day is healthy and good with weight loss. The same with drinking more water instead of high calorie sodas. But, there are better ways of losing weight that won't leave you feeling hungry or getting burned out.
