Tips to Help You Lose Weight

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In this article I will outline a few tips that will help you lose weight. Now these tips are a little less known. In other words, they are not just your typical "diet and excersise" tips but are a little more "advanced".

Tip #1: Make small goals

Say that you want to lose 50 pounds in one year. Now I want you to tell me which option sounds better.

Option A

Its new years and you want to lose 50 pounds, So you say that your new years resolution is "I want to lose 50 pounds this year".

Option B

Its new years and you want to lose 50 pounds, so you say " I want to lose 1 pound a week this year."

If you chose option B than you are correct. You are much more likely to stay on track if you make small goals and take it one step, or one pound at a time.

Tip #2: Keep a food log

You should always, always, keep a food log. If you can't keep track of what you're eating, how are you supposed to change it so you can lose weight? Here is what I want you to do. If you cannot remember what you ate at the end of the day, keep a notepad with you and write down everything that you eat. If you can remember do it at the end of the day. Now go to a website like calorieking.com and calculate how many calories you ate that day. If you have more than about 2000 you are overeating.

Tip #3: Its not only a calories game

Many people think that if they are eating the right amount of calories a day than they are fine. These people are wrong. It matters what kind of calories you are eating. Many people eat 2000 calories of sugary, processed and fatty foods and wonder why they are not losing weight. You need to be eating the right things. So instead of having a 500 calorie bowl of cereal for breakfast, it is much better for you to have 500 calories worth of eggs and toast.

These tips will help you in your weight loss. Remember weight loss takes 2 things, nutrition and exercise. You will not get far if you try to do one without the other.

5 Reasons to Super Charge Your Diet Plan With Fiber

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Fiber. What is it ? We hear about it but do we know what it really is and how it can help with weight loss and good overall health. Fiber is carbohydrates that cannot be digested in the intestinal tract. Fiber is in all foods that we eat including grains and beans and there are different kinds of fiber as well.Soluble fiber is fiber that dissolves in water and insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water.

1. Fiber aids in digestion. As it passes through the stomach it absorbs water and adds bulk to the stool keeping the body regular and keeping constipation down . This is the insoluble fiber which is found in wheat bran, brown rice, carrots, cucumbers, and zucchini. Soluble fiber is found in beans, nuts and seeds, pears, strawberries and blueberries.

2. Fiber traps cholesterol. Fiber is undigested starches and it can trap cholesterol and drag it out of the body . The best fiber for this is the soluble fiber . It turns to a gel like substance during digestion and this is how it prevents sugar ,fat and cholesterol being absorbed by the body and flushes them out when it is passed out.

3. Fiber helps prevent heart disease. Studies show that fiber intake on a group of 40,000 men had up to 40 percent lower coronary disease that those that did not have a high fiber intake. Similar studies done on a large group of nurses showed the same benefits. Cereal grains seem to provide the best benefits. It also has been shown to be effective against the metabolic syndrome which includes fat around the middle and high blood pressure and low levels of the good cholesterol HDL.

4. Fiber can lower your risk of getting type two diabetes. Type two diabetes is the most common form and it is caused when the body can no longer produce enough insulin to lower the blood sugar levels to normal or use the insulin that it does make. Eating sugary foods and refined calories can cause the blood sugar to rise and if you eat like this all the time , which most Americans do , then that may explain why we have so much of this disease in this country. Recent studies show that cereal fibers may help lower the blood sugar to normal levels better that fruits and vegetables. Another large study showed that eating 2 servings of whole grains a day decreased the risk of getting type two diabetes by up to 21 percent of more than 700,000 men and women. Pretty impressive .

5. Fiber helps to aid with weight loss. Fiber is very filling and when you eat it ,you feel fuller. This is because it will expand in your intestines . Eating a high fiber meal will make you feel fuller throughout the day and you will eat less. If you eat the soluble fiber which turns to a gel in your stomach then it will bind sugars, fats, and cholesterol largely undigested throughout the intestinal tract and carry them out of your body. This is the best reason of all to add fiber to your diet.

So how do you add fiber to your diet and how much? Most Americans only get 12 grams and thats not enough to get the benefits that fiber will provide. You should aim for 21 to 25 grams a day for women and men should aim for 30 to 38 grams a day. It sounds like a lot but from the above named benefits it is worth trying to incorporate foods rich in fiber into your diet. Have some oatmeal or cereal with whole grain for breakfast and use crushed bran flakes on top of salads and casseroles or add it in to muffins and breads and cookies. Eat lots of fruit . It has both the soluble and insoluble so you get both benefits. Start with raspberries and then pears both are some of the highest fiber fruits. Eat the fruit whole whenever you can because the peel contains the most fiber and nutrients . Eat lots of vegetables like artichokes, green peas and corn and sweet potatoes and add whole wheat pastas or, if you are allergic to wheat add multi-grain pastas or check into some of the lesser known grains like bulgur and couscous . Add beans to your diet . With these tips and so many healthy choices of fiber rich grains and vegetables and fruits and the health benefits alone, adding fiber to your diet plan is sure to be a success.

Unforgettable First Impressions Part 1: Discover the CPI

Image : http://www.flickr.com

People like others whom they are like. So if you want to make a flawless first impression, it is your duty to discover what you have in common with every person you talk to.

The 6 Essential Elements for Flawless First Impressions are part of Scott Ginsberg's the UNFORGETTABLE! Audio System.

Let Me Ask Ya This

Several months ago my friend Mitch and I were introduced to a small group of people through which we had a mutual friend. I wanted to be sure our conversation was engaging, so I offered one of my favorite questions to ask new people:

"What's your favorite cereal?"

As usual, Mitch and I got a mild chuckle from the group, but eventually everyone contributed. We then talked for twenty minutes about cereal, in-box prizes and various childhood memories related to breakfast foods. What a great conversation!

At the end of the night, Mitch and I said goodbye to our new friends. On the way out, they actually thanked us for our interesting conversation about cereal!

Fast forward...

A few weeks later I ran into Anne, one of the girls from the table I met that night. She jumped out of her seat and gave me a hearty greeting!

"Hey nice to see you again Scott! My friends and I still talk about how enjoyable our cereal conversation was with you and Mitch. We'll never forget that!"

This reveals the first key to Locating the CPI: asking engaging, open ended questions. In other words, questions that don't elicit a yes or no answer or a monosyllabic conversation killer like "F.I.N.E" or "ehh."

When you meet someone for the first time, pose questions that begin with "What's your favorite...?" "How long have you been...?" and "How did you get started...?" Questions like these build rapport, spark creativity and invite people to share experiences and preferences. What's more, they show interest in people's opinions and insights.

TIP #1: What people LIKE is just as important as what they ARE LIKE.

Blank Blank Blank

Another way to Locate the CPI is with compliments. If you want to be unforgettable in your first impressions, giving a compliment - and doing so effectively - is a fail safe method. Now, I'm not talking about cheap flattery. There is a right and wrong way to do this.

If someone came up to you and said, "Hey, uh...you're cute!" or "You smell good," would you feel flattered? Would you feel like they took an interest in you? Probably not. Stuff like this just shows that someone is looking for an easy out, or an easy in.

But there's a way to structure a compliment that's simple and effective. I like to call it "The Blank Blank Blank Theory." Compliments have to be specific or else they don't sound heartfelt. So, according to the formula, you say:

I (blank) your (blank) because (blank).
For example: " I like that watch - it's very classy. Where'd you get it?"

(Notice I added an open ended question at the end of the compliment.)

Specifically when you compliment things, asking people where they got something is a great way to get a story or some background information. How many times have you asked someone this question who answered with "When I was on vacation"? That always generates a synchronized, detailed conversation - especially if you've been to some of the same places they have.

TIP #2: It's all about going from HOW are you to WHO are you.

The Sweetest Sound

The last tool that will help you Locate the CPI is an inquiry about a person's name. In addition to the importance of identifying, amplifying and remembering a person's name, asking about the name itself will make you UNFORGETTABLE every time.

Have you ever had a conversation that begun about someone's name, but continued about their name for a few minutes? It's great when this happens! And you can be certain the other person is enjoying the conversation because it's all about them. So the CPI is: them!

Once after giving a speech, a member of the audience approached me and introduced herself as Hannah. To find out if it was a palindrome, I asked her about the spelling. When she handed me her card, immediately her name struck a chord in me.

One of my favorite books as a child was called "Hannah Is a Palindrome." This book was about a young girl in third grade named Hannah. One day her classmates started to make fun of her because the teacher told the class that "Hannah was a palindrome."

"Ha ha! Hannah is a palindrome, Hannah is a palindrome! Nah, nah, n-na nya!"

But when the teacher explained to her students that "palindrome" meant a word that could be spelled forward and backwards, a long "ooooh" came over the students. After that, everyone loved Hannah and all the kids were envious of her special name.

This was the story I told to Hannah, the audience member. To my surprise, she'd read the book before! We talked all about nicknames, palindromes, children's books and more! Simply because the conversation revolved around one thing: her name.

TIP #3: Don't just use someone's name - inquire about someone's name.

How Are You Similar?

An essential element for flawless first impressions is helping other person realize how similar they are to you. You accomplish this goal by locating the CPI (common point of interest). With the combination of open ended questions, compliments and conversations that focus on them as the topic of discussion, you will be certain to be UNFORGETTABLE!

Supermarket Nerd

There is a name for people like me! I have forgotten what it is, but I don't think it is very complimentary. I am one of those who gawp at what the person in front of me at the supermarket is putting on the conveyor belt. (For anyone who doesn't live in Lancashire, England and may not know what "gawp" means, it is to stare at something idiotically.) I wish I didn't do this, and that I could just concentrate on my own shopping, but I can't seem to help it.

Nearly always, among the fruit and vegetables and the breakfast cereal, there are the ubiquitous pieces of a once living animal, now neatly packaged in cellophane and polystyrene, who has had his / her life taken so violently, to provide a meal for the person now standing in front of me at the checkout. At this point I always find myself wondering who this person is. He / she may be a doctor; a brilliant surgeon who has saved countless lives in their career. Or maybe an airline pilot, flying a jumbo jet with 400 lives in his skilled hands every day. Maybe this person is like myself, just an ordinary individual doing an ordinary job. The only thing that I know for certain, amid all this speculation, is that whoever the person before me is, however great, however meagre, he / she does not merit the death of a living being.

Throughout this web-site you will find poems and stories etc. that seem to be placing mankind at the bottom of the pile, and extolling the virtues of other species. I am sorry if this is how it appears because that is not the intention. In fact, it is just the opposite. What we are really trying to say is that there is no pile. There is no top of the heap or bottom. All forms of life are equal and deserve equal respect. When you come across an item on this or other sites that you find offensive, and you find yourself identifying with the behaviour described, don't take it personally. It is not you as a person who the author of the piece is attacking. It is not even mankind as a whole, it is just the particular trait that is causing so much suffering, usually through ignorance, and which can so easily be changed if you have the will and desire to change it.

And so we come to the crux of the matter. In order to have the will and the desire to change something, we must have deep conviction that it needs to be changed. I believe that the only way to develop such a conviction is through compassion. Have the courage to imagine yourself in the position of a helpless animal being led into the slaughter-house. Try to feel it's fear, try to imagine what it is thinking in the final moments of it's life before the captive bolt smashes into it's head. Nurture compassion within your being. Jack Kornfield said "the near enemy of compassion is pity. Pity appears in the guise of compassion but it's not really. Compassion is where you see another being suffering and say to yourself, gee, it hurts him like it hurts me." You don't have the right to cause the suffering and death of living beings so that you can eat their flesh, and in order for you to evolve further you have to see and accept that.
